Vienna, Budapest and Prague are lovely in spring and early autumn, lively in summer and magical in December. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and events, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Vienna, Budapest and Prague from India is from late April to June and in September and early October, when the weather is pleasant, days are long and crowds are lighter than in mid-summer. December is a special season for Christmas markets, though cold. July and August are warm and lively but busy. January to March is the quietest and cheapest time, with cold, often grey weather.

Central Europe has a continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and events, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (April to May): blossoms, parks and outdoor cafés, mild weather.
  • Summer (June to August): warm to hot, long evenings, river cruises, busy old towns.
  • Autumn (September to October): golden colours, wine harvests, comfortable sightseeing.
  • Winter (November to March): cold, Christmas markets in December, quiet and low-priced after New Year.

Christmas markets

From late November to late December, Central Europe's capitals host some of Europe's best-loved Christmas markets. Vienna's market in front of the City Hall and at Schönbrunn Palace, Budapest's markets on Vörösmarty Square and by St Stephen's Basilica, and Prague's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets fill the evenings with lights, music and crafts. Expect crowds, cold weather and higher hotel prices, especially on weekends.

Summer in the capitals

Summer brings long, warm evenings, outdoor concerts and Danube river cruises. Budapest's thermal baths, including outdoor pools, are popular, and Vienna's Danube Island and parks are lively. Prague's old town and Charles Bridge are very crowded, so visit early in the morning. Heatwaves can push temperatures above 30°C.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June are ideal for the three capitals. Diwali, in October or November, brings cool autumn weather. Christmas and New Year are festive but cold and busy. Book visas, trains and hotels early for May, June and December.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May, June and September are best: comfortable temperatures make walking in old towns easier. December markets are magical for children but cold, so dress in warm layers and plan indoor breaks. Avoid the hottest weeks of summer with young children.

How far ahead to book

For May to September and December, book hotels three to five months ahead, and trains as soon as your route is fixed. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel. For January to March, shorter lead times are usually fine.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Visiting Charles Bridge at midday in summer: go at sunrise for a quieter experience.
  • Packing too light for December: evening markets are cold.
  • Booking December hotels late: market season fills central hotels.
  • Expecting full river cruise schedules in winter: many run only from spring to autumn.

In short

Choose May, June or September for the best all-round trip, December for Christmas markets, and January to March for the lowest prices. Summer suits river cruises and long evenings if you book early.

The three cities by season

Vienna is elegant year-round: spring and autumn suit palace gardens such as Schönbrunn and the Belvedere, summer brings open-air film and music festivals at City Hall, and winter is ball and concert season. Budapest is lively in summer, with rooftop bars, Danube cruises and outdoor thermal pools; in winter, steaming outdoor baths in the cold air are a memorable experience. Prague is most atmospheric in spring, autumn and December, while summer brings large crowds to the old town, Charles Bridge and the castle district.

Salzburg and Munich, often added to longer trips, are best from May to October, with Christmas markets in December and snow in the nearby Alps from December to March.

If your dates are fixed in the hottest weeks of summer, plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings, enjoy Budapest's baths and Vienna's shaded parks in the afternoons, and consider a Danube cruise day. If you travel in late winter, the cities are quiet, museums are uncrowded and hotels offer their best rates, though you will need warm clothing.

Central Europe is also easy to combine with neighbouring countries on one Schengen visa: Munich and Salzburg in summer, or Germany's Christmas markets in December.

Matching the route to the season

Our Budapest, Vienna and Prague trip works well from spring to December. With more time, Eastern Europe, Munich to Prague adds Munich and Salzburg, best from May to October.

Whatever the month, start early at the busiest sights — Charles Bridge, Schönbrunn and the Fisherman's Bastion — and save cafés for the afternoon.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a light jacket and comfortable shoes.
  • Summer: light clothing, sunscreen and swimwear for the baths.
  • Winter: a warm coat, thermal layers, gloves and a hat.
