Germany is lovely from May to September for castles and lakes, festive in December for Christmas markets and lively in autumn for Oktoberfest. Here is a month-by-month guide and the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Germany from India is from May to September, when the weather is warm, castles and lakes are at their best and days are long. May, June and September are the sweet spots; December is magical for Christmas markets; and late September brings Oktoberfest to Munich. Winter is cold but good for snow in the Bavarian Alps, and July and August are busy summer months.

Germany has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters, and its regions vary from the North Sea coast to the Alps. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and events, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (April to May): blossoms, beer gardens reopening, mild weather.
  • Summer (June to August): warm, long days, lakes, castles and river cruises at their best.
  • Autumn (September to November): Oktoberfest, wine festivals, autumn colours, cooler by November.
  • Winter (December to February): cold, Christmas markets, snow and skiing in the Alps.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, held in Munich from mid or late September into early October, is the world's largest folk festival, with beer tents, traditional music, rides and Bavarian food. It is lively and family-friendly during the day, especially on weekdays, but very crowded. Hotel prices in Munich rise sharply, so book months ahead or stay outside the city with easy train access. Non-alcoholic drinks and vegetarian Bavarian dishes such as Käsespätzle and pretzels are widely available.

Christmas markets

From late November until about 23 December, Germany's towns and cities host traditional Christmas markets with wooden stalls, lights, crafts, gingerbread and warm drinks. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, Dresden's Striezelmarkt, Munich's Marienplatz market and Cologne's cathedral market are among the most famous. Weekends are crowded, so visit on weekdays and early evenings.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June are a good time for Germany, with pleasant weather and outlet shopping at Metzingen. Diwali, in October or November, brings cool autumn weather. Christmas and New Year are festive but cold. Book visas and hotels early for May, June, Oktoberfest and December.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May, June and September are best: comfortable temperatures make castle visits and town walks easier. Children enjoy summer lakes, Europa-Park and Christmas markets in December, though winter requires warm clothing. Avoid Oktoberfest's busiest weekend evenings with young children.

How far ahead to book

For Oktoberfest and December, book Munich and market-town hotels four to six months ahead. For summer, book hotels and Neuschwanstein Castle tours two to four months ahead. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Booking Munich late for Oktoberfest: prices peak and rooms sell out.
  • Arriving at Neuschwanstein without a timed ticket in summer: tours sell out.
  • Planning shopping on Sundays: most shops are closed.
  • Packing too light for December: markets are outdoors and cold.

In short

Choose May, June or September for castles, lakes and the Black Forest; late September for Oktoberfest; December for Christmas markets; and January to February for snow in the Alps. Book early for every peak.

Regions by season

Bavaria and the Alps are best from May to October for castles, lakes and mountain views, and from December to March for snow. The Black Forest is lovely for hiking from May to October, especially in autumn, and atmospheric with snow in winter. Berlin is a year-round city with outdoor life in summer and museums and Christmas markets in winter. The Rhine and Moselle valleys are at their best from May to October, when river cruises run and vineyards are green, with wine festivals in September.

Metzingen's outlet village, popular with Indian travellers, is open year-round, with seasonal sales in January and July.

If your dates are fixed in summer, start early at popular sights such as Neuschwanstein, and spend afternoons at lakes such as Tegernsee, Königssee or Lake Constance. If you travel in late winter, combine snow in the Bavarian Alps with museums in Munich and thermal spas in Baden-Baden, which are especially pleasant in cold weather.

Germany also pairs well with Austria and Switzerland on one Schengen visa, so a single trip can combine Bavaria, Salzburg and the Swiss Alps in the summer months.

Matching the route to the season

From spring to autumn, our Metzingen, Munich and Salzburg and Metzingen, Baden-Baden and Stuttgart trips make the most of long days. In December, both can be adapted to include Christmas markets.

Whatever the month, check regional public holidays before you travel; shops and some attractions close on these days, and they vary between German states. Book trains in advance for the best fares, and keep Sundays for parks, palaces and museums rather than shopping.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a waterproof jacket and walking shoes.
  • Summer: light clothing and a light layer for evenings.
  • Winter: a warm coat, thermal layers, gloves and waterproof boots.
