Switzerland has two great seasons: summer for green valleys, lakes and high viewpoints, and winter for snow. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and how Indian holidays fit in.

The best time to visit Switzerland from India depends on what you want: June to September for green meadows, lake cruises and the clearest access to high viewpoints, and December to March for snow, Christmas markets and winter sports. May and late September are excellent shoulder months with good weather and fewer crowds. Avoid the gap between seasons — roughly April and November — if mountain excursions are your priority, as some lifts close for maintenance.

Switzerland's weather varies with altitude as much as with the calendar: it can be warm by Lake Lucerne and below freezing at Jungfraujoch on the same day. This guide gives a month-by-month view, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Summer (June to August): warm valleys, long days, open mountain passes, lake swimming and hiking. Peak season for visitors from India and around the world.
  • Autumn (September to November): clear days and colours in September and October; quieter and grey in November, with some lift closures.
  • Winter (December to March): snow in the mountains and many villages, ski resorts open, Christmas markets in December; short days and cold temperatures.
  • Spring (April and May): blossoms and green valleys return, but higher altitudes still have snow, and some excursions are between seasons.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer school holidays in May and June are a popular time for Swiss trips. May is quieter and good value; June brings warmer weather and higher prices. Diwali in October or November can be lovely in October but may fall in the November maintenance period, so check excursion schedules. Christmas and New Year offer snow and festive markets, but hotel prices peak. Visa appointments also become scarce before summer and winter peaks, so apply early.

Excursions by season

High-altitude excursions such as Jungfraujoch and Mount Titlis run for most of the year and have snow even in summer, though they may close briefly for maintenance or bad weather. Pilatus's famous cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad usually runs from about May to November; in winter, Pilatus is reached by cable car from Kriens. Scenic routes such as the Glacier Express and Bernina Express run year-round, with spectacular snowy views in winter. Lake cruises operate year-round with more frequent sailings in summer.

Matching the route to the season

In summer, our Switzerland and Paris trip makes the most of long days and open excursions. With more time, Switzerland, Paris and Italy or Paris, Amsterdam and Switzerland add more countries on one Schengen visa. In winter, we can adjust routes towards snowy bases and Christmas markets.

Winter in more detail

Swiss winters are a different holiday altogether. Villages such as Grindelwald, Wengen, Zermatt and Engelberg sit under snow, and the classic mountain railways run through white landscapes. Even non-skiers enjoy sledging runs, snowshoe trails, horse-drawn sleigh rides and winter walking paths. Christmas markets in Montreux, Basel, Zurich and Lucerne add festive charm through December. Days are short, so plan sightseeing between roughly 9 am and 4 pm, and book Christmas and New Year stays several months ahead.

Summer in more detail

Summer is when Switzerland feels most generous. Lake Lucerne, Lake Geneva and Lake Thun are perfect for cruises and swimming; hiking trails open high above Grindelwald and Zermatt; and scenic passes such as the Furka and Grimsel are open to traffic. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains, so plan high-altitude excursions for the morning. Long daylight hours, often until after 9 pm, let you fit more into each day.

How far ahead to book

For summer trips, book hotels in Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt four to six months ahead; rooms with lake or mountain views go first. Begin your Schengen visa preparation as early as the rules allow, as appointment slots in Indian cities are scarce before the May–June holidays. For Christmas and New Year, book even earlier. In shoulder months, two to three months is usually enough, though you should still check lift maintenance schedules before fixing dates.

Late spring deserves a mention too. In May, valleys are green and full of blossom, waterfalls such as Staubbach and Trümmelbach are at full flow with snowmelt, and lakeside towns are pleasantly quiet before the summer rush. Some higher excursions and passes may still be closed or snowbound, so check before you plan.

What to pack by season

  • Summer: light layers, a warm jacket for viewpoints, sunglasses, sunscreen and walking shoes.
  • Winter: a warm coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves and a hat.
  • Spring and autumn: layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • All year: a Type J or universal adaptor.
