Switzerland Trip From India: A Complete Planning Guide
- Switzerland
- Switzerland from India
- Schengen visa
- Swiss Alps
- Lucerne
Switzerland is the classic Indian dream trip, and it is straightforward to plan once the Schengen visa is sorted. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, flights, food, budget levers and a sample route.
Switzerland is the European trip many Indian travellers dream about, and it is easier than it looks: an efficient rail network links every major sight, vegetarian food is widely available, and most highlights fit into five or six nights. Base yourselves in Lucerne and Interlaken, travel between June and September for summer scenery or December to March for snow, and start your Schengen visa process at least two months before departure.
The challenge in Switzerland is not access but choice and cost. There are dozens of mountain excursions, several rail passes and very different price levels between towns. This guide helps you choose the right bases, the right season and the right excursions, and shows how Switzerland combines with Paris or Italy.
Who Switzerland suits
| Switzerland suits | Think twice if |
|---|---|
| Honeymooners and couples who love scenery | Your budget is tight; it is among Europe's priciest countries |
| Families, including those with parents | You want nightlife and big-city energy |
| First European trips | You dislike cold weather, even in summer at altitude |
| Travellers who like trains and lakes | You only have three or four days for all of Europe |
When to go
- June to September: green meadows, lake cruises, hiking and the clearest access to high viewpoints. Peak season for Indian travellers, so book early.
- December to March: snow, Christmas markets in December and skiing. Some high-altitude trains and paths have winter schedules.
- April to May and October to November: fewer crowds and lower prices, but some excursions close for maintenance between seasons.
Indian summer school holidays (May and June) and Diwali are busy times for Swiss trips from India; plan visa appointments accordingly.
Schengen visa checklist
Switzerland belongs to the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. If Switzerland is your main destination (where you spend the most nights) or your first entry point with equal nights elsewhere, you apply to Switzerland. Follow the official guidance on the Swiss representation in India visa page. Typical preparation includes:
- a passport issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area;
- a completed application form, photographs and biometrics at the appointment;
- flight reservations, hotel bookings and a day-by-day itinerary;
- travel insurance meeting Schengen requirements;
- bank statements, income tax returns and a leave letter or business documents.
Flights from India
Zurich is the main gateway, with direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi and one-stop connections via the Gulf or European hubs from other cities. Geneva works for western Switzerland. If you combine Switzerland with Paris, consider flying into one city and out of the other, linking them by the TGV Lyria train.
Choosing your bases
| Base | Highlights | Nights |
|---|---|---|
| Lucerne | Chapel Bridge, lake cruises, Mount Titlis, Pilatus, Rigi | 2–3 |
| Interlaken | Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, lakes Thun and Brienz | 2–3 |
| Zurich | Old town, lake, Rhine Falls day trip | 1 |
| Zermatt | The Matterhorn, Gornergrat railway | 1–2 (optional) |
Two bases are usually enough for a first trip. Each hotel move costs half a day of sightseeing.
Getting around
Swiss trains, boats and buses run to the minute and connect seamlessly. The Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, boats and city transport and gives discounts on many mountain railways and cable cars; the Half Fare Card suits travellers making fewer journeys. Compare both against your actual plan. Scenic routes such as the GoldenPass Line and Glacier Express are worth building into a travel day.
Food for Indian travellers
Vegetarian travellers are well served. Cheese fondue and raclette are vegetarian, rösti is easy to find, and supermarkets such as Coop and Migros have ready meals and salads. Zurich's Hiltl is a famous vegetarian institution, and Indian restaurants operate in Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and Geneva. Jain travellers should let hotels and restaurants know in advance and carry some packed food for mountain days.
Budget levers
- Travel in May, June or September rather than July and August.
- Choose one high-altitude excursion (Jungfraujoch or Titlis) rather than several.
- Stay in apartment hotels with kitchenettes for some meals.
- Buy picnic lunches at supermarkets on excursion days.
- Pick the right rail product for your route rather than defaulting to the most expensive pass.
A sample route with Paris
| Nights | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Zurich | Arrival, old town, Rhine Falls |
| 2–3 | Lucerne | Mount Titlis, lake cruise, Chapel Bridge |
| 4–5 | Interlaken | Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen valley |
| 6–7 | Paris | Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Seine cruise, Montmartre |
This follows our Switzerland and Paris trip. With more time, Switzerland, Paris and Italy adds Venice, Florence and Rome, and Paris, Amsterdam and Switzerland adds the Netherlands.
Choosing your mountain excursions
Most Indian travellers choose between three classic high-altitude days. Jungfraujoch, reached by rail from Interlaken via Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, is the highest railway station in Europe, with an ice palace and glacier views. Mount Titlis, above Engelberg near Lucerne, has a rotating cable car, a cliff walk and snow even in summer. Pilatus, also near Lucerne, combines the steepest cogwheel railway with a lake cruise for a gentler, very scenic day.
One high excursion is usually enough for a first trip, especially with parents or young children, who may feel the altitude. Add a lower, easier day such as Grindelwald First, Harder Kulm above Interlaken or a lake cruise. Always check the weather and webcams the evening before and keep the excursion day flexible.
Families travelling with young children will find Switzerland easy: trains have family carriages on some routes, many mountain lifts offer reduced fares for children, and lakeside playgrounds are everywhere.
Practical tips
- Pack layers even in summer; mountain viewpoints can be close to freezing.
- Carry some Swiss francs, though cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- Check mountain webcams before high-altitude excursions; cloud can hide every view.
- Bring a Type J adaptor or a universal adaptor; standard European plugs may not fit every Swiss socket.
If this is your first trip to Europe, our guide to a first international trip covers the basics. And if you would rather hand over the visa paperwork, rail passes and vegetarian requests, a private itinerary gives you one named planner and WhatsApp support from the first document to your flight home.
Your questions, answered
How many days are enough for Switzerland?
Five or six nights in Switzerland covers Zurich, Lucerne with Mount Titlis or Pilatus, and Interlaken with the Jungfrau region. Many Indian travellers add Paris or Italy for a 7 to 11 night European trip.
Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?
Yes. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Check the current process on the Swiss embassy's India visa page and apply through the official appointment channel.
What is the best time to visit Switzerland from India?
June to September is best for green valleys, lake cruises and high-altitude excursions. December to March is best for snow and winter sports. May and October are quieter shoulder months with lower prices.
Is vegetarian food easy to find in Switzerland?
Yes. Swiss cities have many vegetarian restaurants, including Hiltl in Zurich, which is often described as the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant, and Indian restaurants operate in most tourist towns.
