Spring cherry blossom and autumn colours are Japan's most popular seasons, but every month has something to offer. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and how Indian holidays fit in.

The best times to visit Japan are spring, from late March to May, and autumn, from October to November: cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, comfortable temperatures and clear skies. These are also the busiest and most expensive periods, so book early or consider May and late November for a better balance. Winter is excellent for clear city days and snow, and summer suits festivals and the mountains if you can handle humidity.

Japan stretches from snowy Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa, so seasons vary by region. This guide focuses on the classic Tokyo–Fuji–Kyoto route most Indian travellers follow, with a month-by-month view, the best months by travel style and how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The four seasons

  • Spring (March to May): cherry blossoms, then fresh greenery. Golden Week, from late April to early May, is a major Japanese holiday with crowded transport.
  • Summer (June to August): the rainy season (tsuyu) from June to mid-July, then hot, humid weather with festivals and fireworks. Typhoons are possible from August.
  • Autumn (September to November): typhoon risk in September, then crisp, clear weather and autumn colours, peaking in Kyoto in mid to late November.
  • Winter (December to February): cold, dry and often sunny in Tokyo and Kyoto; heavy snow in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Diwali, in October or November, often falls in an excellent window for autumn weather and colours in Japan, although Kyoto can be crowded in late November. Indian summer school holidays in May and June meet the end of spring and the start of the rainy season; early May overlaps with Golden Week crowds. Christmas and New Year offer clear, cold weather, but many businesses close from about 29 December to 3 January. Plan visas early for any peak season.

Mount Fuji by season

Mount Fuji is famously shy. It is most often visible on clear, cold mornings between October and February, when the peak is snow-capped. In summer, clouds and haze often hide it, though the official climbing season usually runs from July to early September. If Fuji views are important, plan a night at Lake Kawaguchi so you have an early morning chance, and keep the day flexible.

Matching the route to the season

In spring and autumn, our Japan short break with Mount Fuji covers the classic blossom and foliage spots. With more time, Tokyo to Kyoto via the Inland Sea adds Hiroshima and Mount Koya, and the 10-night grand tour adds Nagano and Nikko, which are especially beautiful in autumn. Our Tokyo and Kyoto guides help plan each city.

Festivals worth planning around

Japan's festivals, or matsuri, are a highlight in any season. Kyoto's Gion Matsuri fills July with float processions, and the Aoi Matsuri in May features a procession in Heian-period costume. Summer brings fireworks festivals across the country, notably along Tokyo's Sumida River in late July. Obon in mid-August honours ancestors with lantern ceremonies and dances, and Kyoto's Daimonji fires light up the hills on 16 August. In winter, the Sapporo Snow Festival in February displays enormous snow and ice sculptures. Many festivals draw huge crowds, so book accommodation early.

Japan with parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May, October and early December offer comfortable walking weather without the peak blossom and foliage crowds. Summer heat and humidity can be tiring for older travellers and young children, so plan indoor attractions such as museums, aquariums and teamLab for the afternoons. In winter, snow trips to Hokkaido or the Alps are exciting for children, but pack proper winter gear.

How far ahead to book

For cherry blossom and autumn foliage trips, book hotels four to six months ahead, especially in Kyoto, where rooms near the old districts sell out. Start your Japan visa preparation about two months before departure, and avoid non-refundable bookings until it is approved. Ryokan stays with in-room dinners, popular restaurants and attractions such as the Ghibli Museum and teamLab also need advance booking in peak seasons. Outside these windows, two to three months is usually enough.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Summer: breathable clothes, a compact umbrella, a hat and a small towel.
  • Winter: a warm coat, thermal layers, gloves and a hat.
  • All year: socks without holes — you will take your shoes off often.
