There is no single best month for Vietnam because the north, centre and south have different seasons. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and how Indian holidays fit in.

There is no single best time to visit Vietnam, because the north, centre and south have different weather patterns. For a first trip covering the north and south, March to April and late September to November usually offer the best balance; for central beaches, February to August; and for the south and Phu Quoc, December to April. The trick is to plan your route around the season, not the other way round.

Vietnam stretches more than 1,600 kilometres from north to south, and its climate shifts from a four-season north to a tropical south. This guide gives a month-by-month view, explains how each region behaves, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

How the regions differ

  • North (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa): cool winters from December to February, warm springs, hot and humid summers with storms, and pleasant autumns.
  • Centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): dry and hot from about February to August, with the heaviest rain and storm risk from September to December.
  • South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc): tropical, with a dry season from about December to April and a wet season with short, heavy showers from May to November.

These are general patterns, and weather varies from year to year. Always build a buffer day into itineraries with a Halong Bay cruise.

Halong Bay and storms

Halong Bay cruises run year-round, but authorities can suspend sailings during storm warnings, which are most likely between roughly July and October. From December to February, the bay can be misty and cool, which some travellers find atmospheric. March to May and late September to November usually offer the best combination of calm water and clear views. If your cruise is cancelled, a flexible itinerary lets you shift it by a day or swap to nearby Lan Ha Bay or Ninh Binh.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June are good for central Vietnam's beaches and acceptable for the north and south, with heat and short showers. Diwali in October or November suits the north and south well, though central Vietnam may be wet. Christmas and New Year are ideal for the south and Phu Quoc. Book flights and Halong cruises early for these periods, as demand from India and elsewhere is high.

Matching the route to the season

Choose your Vietnam package with the season in mind. In spring or autumn, our north-to-south trip or the 4-night Hanoi and Halong break work well. From February to August, the Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City route makes the most of the central coast. From December to April, Phu Quoc, Hanoi and Halong Bay combines island beaches with the north. Our Hanoi and Da Nang guides help you plan each base.

Festivals worth planning around

Beyond Tet, Vietnam's festival calendar adds colour to any trip. Hoi An holds a lantern festival on the full moon of each lunar month, when the old town dims its electric lights and lanterns float on the Thu Bon River. The Mid-Autumn Festival, usually in September, brings lion dances and lantern-lit streets, especially in Hanoi's old quarter. In the north, Sapa's terraced rice fields are greenest from June to August and turn golden in September before the harvest.

How far ahead to book

For March, April, October and November, book flights and Halong Bay cruises about two to three months ahead; better cabins on popular cruises go first. For Tet and the Christmas–New Year period in the south, book three to four months ahead, as both domestic flights and hotels fill up and prices rise. Apply for your e-visa a few weeks before travel, once your dates and entry airport are fixed. In the shoulder and rainy months, shorter lead times are usually fine, but keep at least one flexible day in the itinerary for weather.

If your dates are fixed by school or work holidays, choose the region that suits the month rather than forcing a full north-to-south route into the wrong season.

What to pack by season

  • December to February in the north: warm layers, a light jacket and closed shoes.
  • March to May: breathable clothes, sun protection and a light layer for air-conditioning.
  • June to November: a compact umbrella or rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and sandals.
  • All year: modest clothing for pagodas and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month to visit Vietnam from India?

For a north-to-south trip, March, April and late September to November usually work best. For the central beaches, February to August. For the south and Phu Quoc, December to April.

When should you avoid Vietnam?

Avoid Halong Bay cruises and central Vietnam during peak storm months, roughly September to November in the centre and July to October in the north, unless your plans are flexible. Tet, in late January or February, brings closures and higher prices.

Is Vietnam good to visit in December?

Yes, for the south and Phu Quoc, which are dry and sunny. Hanoi and Halong Bay are cool and sometimes grey, and central Vietnam can still be rainy in early December.

Is Vietnam hot in May?

Yes. May is hot across most of the country, especially in the south and centre. It is a good month for central beaches and Halong Bay, but plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings.
