Central Europe Trip From India: A Complete Planning Guide
- Central Europe
- Vienna
- Budapest
- Prague
- Schengen visa
Vienna, Budapest and Prague form one of Europe's most elegant and affordable city circuits, linked by short train rides. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, the visa checklist, flights, food and a sample route.
Vienna, Budapest and Prague make one of Europe's most elegant city trips: imperial palaces and concert halls in Vienna, thermal baths and the Danube in Budapest, and a fairy-tale old town and castle in Prague, all linked by easy train rides of about two and a half to four hours. Plan six nights for the three capitals, or nine to add Munich and Salzburg; travel in spring, early autumn or December for the Christmas markets; and start your Schengen visa process at least two months ahead.
Central Europe is also better value than Western Europe, with comfortable hotels, efficient public transport and excellent food. This guide covers who the circuit suits, the cities, when to go, the visa checklist, flights from India, getting around, food, budget levers and a sample route.
Who Central Europe suits
- Couples: river cruises, opera evenings and candlelit cafés.
- Families with parents: compact old towns, good public transport and short train journeys.
- Second-time Europe travellers: a change from the Paris–Switzerland classic.
- History and music lovers: Habsburg palaces, Mozart's Salzburg and Beethoven's Vienna.
- Value seekers: Budapest and Prague in particular offer more for less than Paris or London.
The cities, in brief
| City | Highlights | Nights |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Schönbrunn and the Hofburg, St Stephen's Cathedral, the Belvedere, a classical concert, coffee houses | 2 |
| Budapest | Parliament, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, Széchenyi or Gellért baths, a Danube cruise at night | 2 |
| Prague | Old Town Square and astronomical clock, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, Malá Strana | 2 |
| Salzburg | Mozart's birthplace, the old town, Hohensalzburg fortress, Sound of Music locations | 1–2 |
| Munich | Marienplatz, palaces, beer halls, day trip to Neuschwanstein | 2 |
| Český Krumlov | A preserved medieval town on a river bend | 1 |
When to go
April to June brings spring blossoms, outdoor cafés and long evenings. July and August are warm and busy, and good for river cruises. September and October are crisp and golden, with wine harvests around Vienna and Budapest. Late November and December bring the famous Christmas markets in all three capitals, along with cold weather and occasional snow; book hotels early. January to March is cold and quiet, with the lowest prices.
Schengen visa checklist
Austria, Hungary and Czechia are all in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need one Schengen short-stay visa for the whole trip. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or, if nights are equal, the country you enter first. Applications for these countries in India are generally handled through authorised service providers such as VFS Global; check the relevant embassy's website for the current process. Typical preparation includes:
- a passport issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area;
- a completed application form, photographs and biometrics;
- flight, train and hotel reservations and an itinerary;
- Schengen-compliant travel insurance;
- bank statements, income tax returns and employment or business documents.
Flights from India
Vienna, Prague and Budapest have one-stop connections from Indian metros via the Gulf, Istanbul and European hubs; Munich and Frankfurt have direct flights from some Indian cities. Fly into one city and out of another — for example, into Budapest and out of Prague — to avoid backtracking.
Getting around
Trains are the easiest way to travel: Budapest to Vienna takes roughly two and a half hours, and Vienna to Prague about four. Book reserved seats in advance for comfort and fares. Within cities, trams and metros are excellent, and the old towns are best explored on foot. Danube river cruises between Vienna and Budapest are a scenic alternative in summer.
Food for Indian travellers
Central European cuisine is hearty and meat-focused — schnitzel, goulash, roast pork — but vegetarians are well served. Try Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake), apple strudel and Sachertorte in Vienna; lángos (fried bread with toppings), túrós csusza and chimney cake in Budapest; and fried cheese, potato pancakes and fruit dumplings in Prague. All three capitals have many vegetarian and Indian restaurants, and supermarkets make picnics easy. Jain travellers should plan meals in advance.
Budget levers
- Travel in spring or autumn rather than December or mid-summer.
- Book trains early for the best fares.
- Use city transport passes rather than taxis.
- Choose a lunch menu over dinner à la carte.
- Spend more nights in Budapest and Prague, which are better value than Vienna.
A sample six-night route
| Nights | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Budapest | Parliament, Buda Castle, thermal baths, a Danube cruise at night |
| 3–4 | Vienna | Schönbrunn, the Hofburg, a classical concert, coffee houses |
| 5–6 | Prague | Old Town, Charles Bridge at dawn, Prague Castle, Malá Strana |
This is our Budapest, Vienna and Prague trip. With more time, Eastern Europe, Munich to Prague adds Munich and Salzburg. Our Germany planning guide covers Munich and Bavaria in more detail.
With parents and children
The circuit suits families well: short train rides, flat central areas in Vienna and Budapest, and plenty of parks. Prague's castle district is uphill, so use trams or taxis to reach it. Choose hotels near a tram or metro stop, plan rest breaks in cafés, and book concerts and palace tours with seated or step-free options for older travellers. Children enjoy Vienna's Prater amusement park and Budapest's Children's Railway.
Christmas markets
From late November to late December, Vienna, Budapest and Prague host some of Europe's best-loved Christmas markets. Vienna's market in front of the City Hall, Budapest's stalls on Vörösmarty Square and by St Stephen's Basilica, and Prague's Old Town Square market fill the evenings with lights, music, crafts and warm treats such as chimney cake and roasted chestnuts. It is a magical but cold and busy time to visit: book hotels early, pack thermal layers and plan indoor museum time for the afternoons.
Practical tips
- Hungary and Czechia use their own currencies (forint and koruna); Austria uses the euro. Cards are widely accepted.
- Avoid exchanging money at street booths with poor rates.
- Bring swimwear for the Budapest baths.
- Watch for pickpockets on Charles Bridge and in crowded squares.

Your questions, answered
How many days are enough for Vienna, Budapest and Prague?
Six nights, two in each city, covers the highlights. Nine nights lets you add Salzburg, Munich or Český Krumlov at a relaxed pace.
Do Indians need a visa for Austria, Hungary and Czechia?
Yes. All three are in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Apply to the country where you spend the most nights, through that country's authorised channel.
What is the best time to visit Central Europe?
April to June and September to October offer pleasant weather. December is magical for Christmas markets but cold. July and August are warm and busy.
Is Central Europe good for vegetarian travellers?
Yes. Vienna, Budapest and Prague all have vegetarian and Indian restaurants, and local dishes such as cheese dumplings, potato pancakes, strudel and lángos are vegetarian. Traditional mains are meat-heavy, so ask.
