Uttarakhand is best from October to June, with tiger season at Corbett, clear Himalayan views in autumn and snow at Auli in winter. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and when to book.

The best time to visit Uttarakhand is from October to June. October and November bring clear skies and the sharpest Himalayan views; March to June is pleasant in the hills and the best time for tiger sightings at Jim Corbett; and December to February brings snow to Auli and the higher hills. The monsoon, from July to September, brings landslides and the closure of most Corbett zones, so it suits only flexible travellers and wellness stays in Rishikesh.

Uttarakhand spans foothill forests, lake towns and high Himalayan valleys, so seasons vary with altitude. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, safari seasons, crowds and festivals, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Autumn (October to November): clear, crisp days, Himalayan views, Corbett reopening.
  • Winter (December to February): cold, snow at higher altitudes, foggy mornings in the foothills.
  • Spring (March to April): rhododendrons in bloom, pleasant days, good wildlife sightings.
  • Summer (May to June): warm in the foothills, pleasant in the hills, peak family season, best tiger sightings.
  • Monsoon (July to September): heavy rain, landslides, most Corbett zones closed, Valley of Flowers in bloom.

Corbett's safari seasons

Jim Corbett National Park's zones open on different dates. Bijrani generally opens in mid-October, Dhikala in mid-November, and both close around mid-June. Jhirna and Dhela remain open for most of the year. Winter safaris are cold but atmospheric, with misty mornings and good birdlife. March to June is the best period for tiger sightings, as vegetation thins and animals gather near water. Book permits and forest stays through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve booking site as soon as booking opens.

The hills by season

Nainital, Bhimtal and Mussoorie are pleasant from March to June, when families escape the plains' heat, and crisp and clear in October and November. Binsar, Mukteshwar and Kausani offer the best Himalayan panoramas in October and November and on clear winter days. Auli is a winter destination for skiing from about January to March. Rishikesh is best from September to April for rafting, yoga and the evening aarti, and very hot in May and June.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, October, November and March to May are best, with comfortable temperatures for safaris and lake visits. Winter safaris are cold in open jeeps, so pack blankets and warm layers. Avoid the monsoon with young children or elderly parents because of landslide risk. Children usually enjoy Corbett's jeep safaris and Nainital's boating in any open season.

How far ahead to book

Book Corbett safaris and forest stays as soon as booking windows open, especially for Dhikala and weekends. For May, June, Christmas and New Year, book hotels in Nainital and Mussoorie three to four months ahead. In other months, two to three months is usually enough.

Matching the route to the season

From October to June, our Enchanting Wilderness Getaway pairs a romantic stay with Corbett safaris. In the cooler months, A Journey of Taste and Tradition of Nainital explores Kumaoni kitchens and lake views.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning Dhikala in October: it usually opens only from mid-November.
  • Booking Corbett safaris late: popular zones and forest lodges sell out quickly.
  • Expecting rafting in the monsoon: it is suspended from roughly July to September.
  • Driving to the high hills in July and August: landslides are frequent; keep plans flexible.
  • Underestimating winter safari cold: morning drives in open jeeps can be near freezing in December and January.

A final tip: Uttarakhand's altitude changes everything. Rishikesh and Corbett can be hot in May while Binsar and Mukteshwar are pleasantly cool, so a route that moves from the foothills to the hills makes the most of any season.

In short

Choose October and November for clear Himalayan views, March to June for tiger sightings at Corbett and cool hill stations, and January to March for snow at Auli. Avoid the high hills in the monsoon unless your plans are flexible, and book Corbett permits as soon as the windows open.

If you can travel only in the monsoon, base yourself in Rishikesh for yoga and the evening aarti, or plan the Valley of Flowers trek with an experienced operator, rather than attempting long hill drives.

What to pack by season

  • October to February: warm layers, a heavy jacket for winter safaris and gloves.
  • March to June: light layers, sun protection and a fleece for hill evenings.
  • July to September: rain gear and sturdy, quick-dry clothing.
  • All year: neutral colours for safaris.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month to visit Uttarakhand?

October and November offer clear skies and Himalayan views. March to June is pleasant in the hills and the best period for tiger sightings at Corbett. For snow, visit Auli or Mussoorie between December and February.

When is Jim Corbett open for safaris?

The Dhikala zone generally opens from mid-November to mid-June, and Bijrani from about mid-October to June. Some zones, such as Jhirna and Dhela, remain open for most of the year. Check the official Corbett booking site for current dates.

Is Rishikesh good to visit in the monsoon?

Rishikesh is green and peaceful in the monsoon, but river rafting is suspended, the Ganga runs high, and landslides can affect roads to the hills. It suits yoga and wellness stays rather than adventure.

When can you see snow in Uttarakhand?

Auli, Chopta and higher Kumaon villages usually have snow from December to February. Mussoorie and Nainital see occasional snowfall in January.
