Himachal Pradesh is pleasant from March to June, clear and golden in October and November, and snowy in winter. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, roads and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Himachal Pradesh depends on what you want: March to June for pleasant weather and a break from the plains' heat; October and November for clear skies, autumn colours and the best mountain views; and December to February for snow in Shimla, Manali and higher villages. The monsoon, from July to September, brings landslides and road closures, so it suits only flexible travellers.

Himachal ranges from low valleys to high Himalayan deserts, so seasons vary with altitude. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, roads and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Spring (March to April): blossoms, mild days, snow lingering at higher altitudes.
  • Summer (May to June): warm days, cool nights, peak season for families escaping the heat.
  • Monsoon (July to September): heavy rain, green valleys, landslide risk; Spiti and Lahaul are drier.
  • Autumn (October to November): crisp, clear days, golden colours, the best views.
  • Winter (December to February): snow in the mountains, cold nights, high passes closed.

Summer: March to June

Spring and summer are the busiest seasons in Himachal, as families from the plains come for cool weather. Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie and the Kangra valley are all pleasant, and orchards bloom in March and April. May and June coincide with Indian school holidays, so hotels fill up and traffic on popular routes, especially to Manali and Solang, can be heavy. Book early and travel midweek if you can.

Autumn: October and November

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Himachal. The monsoon has cleared the air, skies are bright blue, and mountain views from Dharamshala, Shimla and Manali are at their sharpest. The Kullu Dussehra festival, held in October, brings deities from surrounding villages to Kullu for a week of celebrations. Nights get cold by November, and early snow is possible at higher altitudes.

Winter: December to February

Winter brings snow to Shimla, Manali, Kufri, Solang Valley and higher villages. It is a magical time for snow lovers and families, though temperatures drop below freezing at night, roads can be icy, and high passes such as Rohtang and Kunzum are closed. The Atal Tunnel provides winter access to Lahaul, subject to weather. Pack proper winter clothing, and travel with an experienced hill driver.

Places by season

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are pleasant from March to June and October to November, with Losar celebrations in February. The Kangra valley's tea gardens are greenest from April to June, when the first flush is picked, and again after the monsoon. Bir Billing's paragliding season peaks from October to November and March to May. Spiti and Kinnaur are best from June to September. Shimla is a year-round destination, with snow in winter and cool weather in summer.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, April to June and October are best: weather is comfortable and roads are open. Choose lower-altitude bases such as Shimla, Dharamshala or Palampur. In winter, snow is exciting for children, but older travellers may find the cold and icy paths difficult. Avoid the monsoon with young children or elderly parents because of landslide risk.

How far ahead to book

For May, June, Christmas and New Year, book hotels three to four months ahead. For October, two to three months is usually enough. In the monsoon and late winter, shorter lead times are fine, but keep travel plans flexible.

Matching the route to the season

In spring, summer and autumn, our Himalayan Tranquillity trip explores Dharamshala and the Kangra valley's tea gardens. Food lovers will enjoy Flavours of Himachal, especially during harvest season in autumn.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning Spiti in winter or spring: the high routes open only from about June.
  • Driving mountain roads in the monsoon without a buffer: landslides can close roads for hours or days.
  • Expecting snow in Shimla in March: snowfall is most likely between late December and February.
  • Travelling to Manali on summer weekends: traffic jams on the approach roads can be severe; go midweek.

In short

Choose April to June to escape the summer heat, October and November for the clearest mountain views, and late December to February for snow. Save Spiti for June to September, and treat the monsoon with caution. Keep each day's drive short, and give yourself a buffer day whenever weather can affect the roads.

What to pack by season

  • March to June: light layers, a fleece for evenings and sun protection.
  • July to September: rain gear, quick-dry clothes and sturdy shoes.
  • October to November: warm layers and a jacket.
  • December to February: a heavy coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots and gloves.
