Kashmir has a different beauty in every season: tulips in spring, green meadows in summer, golden chinars in autumn and snow in winter. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and when to book.

Kashmir is beautiful all year, but each season offers something different: April to June for tulips, blossoms and pleasant weather; July to September for green meadows and Sonamarg; October and November for golden chinar trees and clear skies; and December to February for snow in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. For a first trip with comfortable weather, April to June and October are the best choices.

Kashmir's climate is temperate, with four distinct seasons and cold winters. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and highlights, explains what each season is like, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Spring (March to May): tulips, almond and apple blossoms, mild days and cool nights.
  • Summer (June to August): warm days, green meadows, Sonamarg open, busy with Indian holidaymakers.
  • Autumn (September to November): golden chinar trees, clear skies, crisp air, fewer crowds.
  • Winter (December to February): snow, frozen landscapes, skiing in Gulmarg, very cold nights.

Spring and summer: April to June

Spring and early summer are the most popular times to visit Kashmir. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, one of Asia's largest, usually blooms from late March into April. Orchards blossom, the Mughal gardens are colourful, and meadows in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg turn bright green. Days are pleasant and nights cool. May and June coincide with Indian school holidays, so houseboats and hotels fill up quickly and prices rise.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is many photographers' favourite season. The chinar trees turn shades of red, orange and gold, especially in Srinagar's Mughal gardens and Naseem Bagh. Skies are clear, crowds thin out, and the air is crisp. Late October brings the saffron harvest around Pampore, where fields bloom purple. Nights get cold by November, and early snow is possible at higher altitudes.

Winter: December to February

Winter transforms Kashmir into a snowy landscape. Gulmarg becomes one of India's top ski destinations, with the gondola offering access to snowy slopes. Pahalgam and Sonamarg's lower areas are blanketed in snow, and Srinagar's houseboats and hotels are cosy with heating. Temperatures drop well below freezing at night, and heavy snowfall can close roads or delay flights, so keep a buffer day.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, April to June and September to October offer comfortable temperatures for gardens, shikara rides and the gondola. Winter can be challenging for older travellers due to the cold and icy paths, though Srinagar's heated hotels and houseboats are comfortable. Children love snow in winter, but pack proper boots, gloves and thermal layers. Summer meadows in Pahalgam and Gulmarg suit gentle pony rides and picnics.

How far ahead to book

For May and June, book houseboats and hotels three to four months ahead, as Indian summer holidays drive high demand. For the tulip season and Christmas–New Year, two to three months is usually enough. In autumn and late winter, shorter lead times are often fine, though the best houseboats still fill up.

Matching the route to the season

Our Enchanting Kashmir Sojourn covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, adjusted for the season: meadows and Sonamarg in summer, snow and cosy stays in winter. Food lovers will enjoy Kashmir's Culinary Trails and Traditions, especially in autumn, when saffron and harvest produce are at their best.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting snow in April or May: by late spring, snow remains only on the higher slopes and at the top of the Gulmarg gondola.
  • Arriving after the tulips: the garden blooms for just a few weeks; check the opening announcement.
  • Skipping a buffer in winter: snowfall can close the Srinagar–Gulmarg road or delay flights.
  • Booking late for May and June: Indian summer holidays fill houseboats and hotels early.
  • Packing too light in autumn: October evenings are cold, and November nights can drop close to freezing.

A final tip: each valley has its own timing. Sonamarg is best from May to October, Gulmarg is a winter and summer destination, and Pahalgam is lovely from April to November. Plan your route so each valley falls in its best season.

In short

Choose April to June for tulips, blossoms and green meadows; October for golden chinars and clear skies; and December to February for snow and skiing in Gulmarg. July to September is a good, quieter option for Sonamarg and the high valleys. Whatever the season, give yourself at least five nights, keep a buffer day for weather and travel with an experienced local driver.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a warm jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Summer: light layers, a fleece for evenings and sun protection.
  • Winter: a heavy coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves and a warm hat.
  • All year: modest clothing for shrines and the old city.
