Goa is at its sunniest from November to February, lush and peaceful in the monsoon, and hot in April and May. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Goa is from November to February, when skies are clear, seas are calm and beach shacks are open. Late October and March are excellent shoulder months; April and May are hot but quieter and cheaper; and the monsoon from June to September turns Goa green and peaceful, though swimming in the sea is unsafe. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year.

Goa's seasons are defined by the south-west monsoon. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and festivals, explains what monsoon Goa is really like, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Peak season (November to February): sunny, dry, comfortable, lively; highest prices around Christmas and New Year.
  • Shoulder season (October and March): warm, fewer crowds, good value.
  • Summer (April and May): hot and humid, calm seas, quieter beaches.
  • Monsoon (June to September): heavy rain, lush landscapes, rough seas, lowest prices.

Peak season: November to February

This is classic Goa: warm sunshine, calm turquoise water, beach shacks with sunset views, night markets and a lively atmosphere. It is ideal for beach holidays, honeymoons and family trips. The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive, with packed beaches in the north and minimum-stay rules at many hotels. If you want peak weather without peak crowds, choose late November, mid-January or February.

Monsoon Goa: June to September

Monsoon Goa is a different, quieter destination. The landscape turns deep green, waterfalls such as Dudhsagar (check current access rules) are at full flow, and villages and spice plantations are beautiful in the rain. It is a good time for spa and wellness stays, food trails and heritage walks in Panjim and Old Goa, with hotel rates at their lowest. The sea is rough, and swimming is unsafe; many beaches post warnings and shacks close. Expect heavy downpours, so keep plans flexible.

Summer: April and May

April and May are hot and humid, but the sea is usually calm and clear, and beaches are much quieter than in winter. Hotel rates fall, and it is mango season. Plan beach time for mornings and evenings, rest in the afternoon, and choose hotels with good pools and air-conditioning.

North and South Goa by season

In peak season, North Goa's beaches around Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator are lively and crowded, while South Goa's beaches such as Palolem, Agonda, Colva and Cavelossim stay calmer. In the monsoon, many North Goa beach businesses close, but inland villages such as Assagao and Siolim remain charming, and South Goa's resorts often offer monsoon wellness packages. Our Goa destination guide covers each area in more depth.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, November to February is easiest, with pleasant weather for heritage walks in Old Goa and Fontainhas as well as beach time. Choose resorts on gentle beaches with lifeguards. In the monsoon, families can enjoy indoor activities, cooking classes and spice plantation visits, but keep children away from the sea. Summer heat can be tiring for young children, so rest in the afternoons.

How far ahead to book

For Christmas and New Year, book villas and resorts three to four months ahead; many have minimum stays and fill early. For the rest of peak season, one to two months is usually enough. Long weekends and Diwali also see spikes in demand from across India. In the monsoon and summer, shorter lead times are fine and last-minute deals are common.

Matching the stay to the season

In peak season, our Essence of Goa combines beaches with heritage. In the monsoon, the Goan Experiential and Wellness trip makes the most of the quiet, green season. Expecting parents can choose Just Us by the Sea in the cooler months.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting beach-shack life in the monsoon: many shacks close from June to September, and swimming is unsafe.
  • Booking late for New Year: prices peak and minimum stays apply; book months ahead.
  • Choosing the wrong half of Goa for the season: North Goa is quieter in the monsoon, but inland villages are more charming than the beaches.
  • Underestimating April and May heat: plan beach time for mornings and evenings.

In short: choose November to February for classic beach weather, March or late October for value with sunshine, and the monsoon for a green, quiet retreat.

What to pack by season

  • November to February: light clothes, swimwear, sun protection and a light layer for evenings.
  • March to May: breathable cotton, a hat and plenty of sunscreen.
  • June to September: rain gear, quick-dry clothing and sandals with grip.
  • All year: modest clothing for churches and temples.
