Kerala is pleasant from October to March, lush and restorative in the monsoon, and hot in April and May. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.
The best time to visit Kerala is from November to February, when the weather is pleasant across the backwaters, beaches and hills. October and March are good shoulder months, the monsoon from June to September is ideal for Ayurveda and lush landscapes, and April and May are hot on the coast but pleasant in the hills. Kerala has a season for every style; the key is matching your route to the month.
Kerala receives two monsoons — the south-west monsoon from June to September and the north-east monsoon from October to November — which shape its seasons. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and festivals, and suggests the best months by travel style.
Kerala month by month
| Month | Weather | Crowds and prices | Festivals and highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Pleasant, dry; cool in the hills | Busy, high prices early in the month | Temple festivals, Theyyam season in the north |

| March | Hot, humid | Moderate | Attukal Pongala in Thiruvananthapuram, temple festivals |
| April | Hot, humid; pre-monsoon showers | Quieter on the coast, busy in the hills | Vishu, Thrissur Pooram (April or May) |

| June | South-west monsoon begins | Low prices | Ayurveda season, green landscapes |
| July | Heavy rain | Low prices | Ayurveda, waterfalls |
| August | Rain, breaks of sunshine | Rising around Onam | Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Onam (August or September) |

Peak season: November to February
This is Kerala at its most comfortable. The backwaters are calm, the beaches are sunny, and the hills of Munnar and Thekkady are cool and clear. It is ideal for first-time visitors, honeymooners and families. It is also the busiest and most expensive time, especially from mid-December to early January, when houseboats and resorts fill up. Book at least two to three months ahead for these weeks.
Monsoon season: June to September
The monsoon transforms Kerala into a deep green landscape of waterfalls, mist and rain-fed paddy fields. Ayurvedic tradition considers this season especially beneficial for treatments, as the cool, moist climate is thought to help the body absorb therapies, and many wellness retreats run special programmes. Hotel rates fall, and the backwaters are peaceful. Expect heavy downpours, occasional travel disruptions and rough seas; swimming at beaches is not safe.
Summer: April and May
The coast and backwaters are hot and humid in April and May, with pre-monsoon showers building towards the end of May. This is the time to head for the hills: Munnar, Thekkady, Wayanad and Vagamon are pleasant and popular with families during Indian school holidays. Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala's most spectacular temple festivals, falls in April or May.
Best months by travel style
| Travel style | Best months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First trip, classic loop | November to February | Comfortable everywhere |
| Honeymoon | October, November, February, March | Good weather with fewer crowds |
| Ayurveda and wellness | June to September | Traditional treatment season |
| Families in school holidays | April and May (hills), December | Fits school calendars |
| Theyyam and festivals | December to March in north Kerala | Peak Theyyam season |
| Budget travellers | June to September, April | Lowest prices |
Matching the route to the season
In peak season, our Serene Kerala Escapade follows the classic Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey loop. For Theyyam season, The Sacred Flames of Kerala heads north. During the monsoon, the Kerala Wellness Retreat and Soul by the Sea in Kovalam make the most of the Ayurveda season. Couples can choose Just Us by the Sea at Marari in the drier months.
Shoulder months: October and March
October and March are often overlooked but offer good value. In October, the south-west monsoon has passed and the land is at its greenest, though the north-east monsoon brings occasional showers, particularly in the south. North Kerala's Theyyam season begins, and resorts offer lower rates before peak season. In March, the weather turns hot and humid on the coast, but the backwaters are calm, temple festivals with caparisoned elephants are at their peak and crowds are thinner after the winter rush.
Kerala with parents and children by season
For families with older parents, November to February is easiest, with comfortable temperatures for sightseeing and the hill drives. Summer holidays in April and May are best spent in the hills, where Munnar and Thekkady stay pleasant. During the monsoon, choose resorts with indoor activities and avoid long hill drives in heavy rain. Children usually enjoy the houseboats, elephant sightings in Thekkady and the tea factory visits in Munnar in any season.
How far ahead to book
For the Christmas and New Year weeks, book houseboats, beach resorts and Munnar hotels three to four months ahead; private houseboats with good crews and quiet routes are the first to go. For the rest of the peak season, two to three months is usually enough. Onam and the boat-race season in August and September also draw crowds around Alleppey and Kumarakom. During the monsoon and summer, shorter lead times are fine, except for popular Ayurvedic retreats, which can fill months ahead.
One more tip: Kerala's hill stations have their own microclimates. Munnar can be chilly at night from December to February, while Wayanad and Thekkady stay mild; pack a light layer whatever the month.
What to pack by season
- November to February: light cottons, a light jacket for Munnar and sun protection.
- March to May: breathable clothes, a hat and plenty of water.
- June to September: rain gear, quick-dry clothing and sandals with grip.
- All year: modest clothing for temples and insect repellent.
