Uttarakhand Trip Planning Guide: Routes, Seasons and Stays
- Uttarakhand
- Uttarakhand tour
- Jim Corbett
- Nainital
- Rishikesh
Uttarakhand combines tiger country at Corbett, the lakes of Kumaon, the yoga capital of Rishikesh and Himalayan views. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, how to reach and a sample route.
Uttarakhand packs remarkable variety into a short drive from Delhi: tiger safaris in Jim Corbett National Park, the lakes and forests of Kumaon around Nainital, the yoga and river culture of Rishikesh, and Himalayan panoramas from Binsar, Mussoorie or Auli. Plan five or six nights for two regions, travel between October and June, and book Corbett safaris early. Like all mountain trips, it rewards fewer stops and slower days.
The state divides into two regions: Kumaon in the east, with Corbett, Nainital and Binsar, and Garhwal in the west, with Rishikesh, Mussoorie and the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Trying to cover both in one week usually means too much driving. This guide covers who Uttarakhand suits, the regions, when to go, how to reach, food and a sample route.
Who Uttarakhand suits
- Couples: riverside resorts near Corbett and cottages with Himalayan views in Kumaon.
- Families: safaris, lake boating, toy-town hill stations and easy nature walks.
- Wellness seekers: yoga ashrams and retreats in Rishikesh.
- Adventure lovers: rafting on the Ganga, treks such as Kedarkantha and Valley of Flowers, and skiing at Auli in winter.
- Pilgrims: Haridwar, Rishikesh and the Char Dham — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Planning a Corbett safari
Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park, and it is divided into zones, each with its own gate and season. Dhikala, the largest and most famous, is typically open from mid-November to mid-June and is best experienced with an overnight stay inside the forest, which must be booked well in advance. Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela and Durga Devi offer day safaris by jeep. Book through the official Corbett Tiger Reserve booking site or through your planner, and carry the original ID used for booking.
Tiger sightings are never guaranteed, but the forests, rivers, elephants, deer and more than 600 bird species make every drive worthwhile. Morning safaris are usually the best for sightings and photography.
When to go
October to June is the main travel window. October and November bring clear skies and the best Himalayan views. December to February is cold, with snow in Auli, Mussoorie and higher Kumaon, and foggy mornings in the foothills. March to June is warm and popular with families escaping the plains; it is also the best time for tiger sightings as the forests dry out. The monsoon makes the hills green but is the least predictable time to travel.
How to reach
Most travellers drive from Delhi: roughly five to six hours to Corbett, seven to Nainital and six to Rishikesh. Trains reach Ramnagar (for Corbett), Kathgodam (for Nainital and Kumaon) and Haridwar or Dehradun (for Rishikesh and Mussoorie), including fast services such as the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat. Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport serves Rishikesh and Mussoorie, and Pantnagar airport serves Kumaon. A private car with an experienced hill driver is the easiest way to travel within the state.
Food in Uttarakhand
Kumaoni and Garhwali food is simple, wholesome and mostly vegetarian. Try bhatt ki churkani (black soybean curry), aloo ke gutke, kafuli (a green leafy curry), madua (finger millet) rotis and bal mithai, the chocolate-like sweet from Almora. Rishikesh is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town with plenty of cafés and sattvic food. Our A Journey of Taste and Tradition of Nainital explores Kumaoni kitchens in depth.
A sample six-night route
| Nights | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Jim Corbett | Two or three jeep safaris, river walks, Corbett Museum, a slow afternoon at the resort |
| 4–6 | Nainital or Bhimtal | Lake boating, Snow View, Sattal, a Kumaoni food trail, a day trip to Mukteshwar |
Our Enchanting Wilderness Getaway is a romantic stay near Corbett, and it pairs naturally with the Nainital food trail. Prefer Garhwal? Plan three nights in Rishikesh and three in Mussoorie and Landour instead.
Rishikesh, Mussoorie and the Garhwal hills
If you prefer Garhwal to Kumaon, base yourself in Rishikesh for two or three nights. Attend the evening Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat, take a yoga or meditation class, cross the Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula areas on foot, and visit the Beatles Ashram, now part of Rajaji Tiger Reserve, with its graffiti-covered meditation halls. Rafting on the Ganga runs from roughly September to June, with stretches suitable for beginners.
From Rishikesh, Mussoorie and its quieter neighbour Landour are about two hours up the hill via Dehradun. Walk the Chakkar loop in Landour, browse the old bakeries and bookshops, and catch Himalayan views from Lal Tibba on a clear morning. Haridwar, close to Rishikesh, is one of Hinduism's holiest cities, and its evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri is a powerful experience. For winter snow and skiing, Auli is reached via Joshimath and offers one of India's longest ropeways, subject to weather and operations.
With parents and children
Uttarakhand works well for multi-generational trips. Safaris are seated, Nainital's lake and gardens need little walking, and Rishikesh's evening aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan is a moving experience for parents. Keep daily drives under five hours, choose hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms, and carry motion-sickness remedies for the hill roads. For children, the Corbett jeep safaris and boat rides are usually the highlights.
Practical tips
- Book Corbett safaris and forest stays as soon as booking windows open.
- Carry warm layers in every season; nights are cool in the hills.
- Respect Rishikesh's customs: it is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town.
- Choose licensed rafting operators and wear the safety gear provided.
- Carry cash for small towns, though UPI is common.
For another Himalayan option, our Himachal Pradesh planning guide covers Dharamshala, Manali and Shimla. With one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, safari bookings, drivers and stays are handled so you can focus on the forest and the views.
Your questions, answered
How many days are enough for Uttarakhand?
Five or six nights covers Jim Corbett and Nainital or Rishikesh and Mussoorie comfortably. Add three or four nights for the higher Kumaon or Garhwal hills such as Binsar, Munsiyari or Auli.
What is the best time to visit Jim Corbett?
The Dhikala zone is generally open from mid-November to mid-June, and other zones such as Bijrani and Jhirna have their own seasons, with Jhirna open for longer. March to June offers the best chance of tiger sightings as vegetation thins. Check the official reserve website for current zone dates and bookings.
How do you reach Uttarakhand from Delhi?
Corbett is roughly five to six hours by road from Delhi, and Nainital about seven hours. Trains run to Ramnagar for Corbett, Kathgodam for Nainital and Haridwar or Dehradun for Rishikesh and Mussoorie. Dehradun and Pantnagar have airports.
Is Uttarakhand good for families?
Yes. Corbett safaris, Nainital's lake and boat rides, Mussoorie's Mall Road and Rishikesh's river are all family-friendly. Keep drives short, choose lower-altitude bases and book safaris well in advance for school holidays.
