18. St Mary's Island. Basalt rock formations off Malpe.

Exploring Hampi

Hampi has two broad zones: the Sacred Centre, with the Virupaksha Temple and the bazaar, and the Royal Centre, with the Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables and Queen's Bath. The Vittala Temple, with its stone chariot and musical pillars, sits along the river. Coracle rides on the Tungabhadra and the Anegundi villages across the river add variety. A licensed guide makes the ruins much easier to understand.

More of Mysuru

Mysuru is known for silk, sandalwood and yoga. Devaraja Market is lively in the morning, and silk weaving factories offer tours. Mysuru Dasara in autumn brings processions and illuminations; book early if visiting then.

Planning a Kabini safari

Kabini lodges usually include jeep and boat safaris with naturalists. The backwaters attract elephant herds in the dry season, from about March to May. Government safaris cost less but sell out quickly.

More of Coorg

Coorg, or Kodagu, rewards a slow stay. Beyond the estates, the Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India, is a short drive away, and the Iruppu Falls and Nagarhole are within reach. Talacauvery, the source of the Kaveri river, and Madikeri Fort add history and views. Kodava culture, with its distinctive dress and cuisine, is part of the experience.

More of Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru, where coffee was first grown in India, has treks to Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, and Kudremukh's grasslands. Baba Budangiri, Hebbe Falls and the temple towns of Belur and Halebidu are nearby. Estate stays offer coffee tours and quiet evenings.

Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal

The Chalukyan sites north of Hampi trace the evolution of temple architecture. Badami's cave temples are cut into red sandstone cliffs above a lake; Aihole has more than a hundred early temples; and Pattadakal's group is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A long day with a driver covers all three, or stay a night in Badami.

More of the coast

Karnataka's coast is quieter than Goa's. Gokarna's Om, Kudle, Half Moon and Paradise beaches are linked by coastal paths. Udupi has the Krishna temple and famously good vegetarian food, Murudeshwar has a giant Shiva statue by the sea, and Malpe offers boats to St Mary's Island. The Konkan Railway makes the coast easy to reach.

Wellness and yoga

Karnataka has respected wellness centres, from Mysuru's yoga schools to Ayurveda and naturopathy retreats near Bengaluru. Our Shreyas babymoon is a calm example. Retreats are usually priced as packages and suit longer stays.

Dandeli and the Western Ghats

Dandeli, in the forests of the Western Ghats, offers river rafting, kayaking, birdwatching for hornbills and jungle stays. It suits families and adventure seekers between Goa and Hampi.

Bengaluru on the way

Most trips begin or end in Bengaluru. Lalbagh Botanical Garden, Cubbon Park, Bangalore Palace and Tipu Sultan's summer palace make a pleasant day, and the city's cafés, breweries and darshinis are part of its character. Nandi Hills, about an hour and a half away, is popular at sunrise.

Festivals

Mysuru Dasara in autumn, the Hampi Utsav and the Kambala buffalo races on the coast in winter are colourful events. Hotels fill during Dasara, so book early.

Food experiences

Masala dosa, Mysore pak, Kodava pandi curry (with vegetarian alternatives), Udupi meals and Mangalorean seafood are highlights. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy.

When to go

October to March is best, especially for Hampi. The monsoon from June to September makes the coffee hills lush.

What you can safely skip

You do not need both Coorg and Chikkamagaluru on a short trip. Choose one.

Getting between experiences

A car and driver for the hills and wildlife, and overnight trains to Hampi, work well.

Free and low-cost experiences

Hampi's open ruins, beaches and temple towns cost little.

Best views

Hampi from Matanga Hill at sunrise, Mysuru Palace lit up, and mist over Coorg's coffee estates.

How to choose

Our Coorg's Enchanted Getaway suits a hill break, and our Shreyas babymoon is a calm stay near Bengaluru.

For families and parents

Children enjoy safaris and elephant camps; parents may prefer cars between Hampi sites.

For couples

Couples often favour a coffee-estate stay, a Kabini lodge and Gokarna's beaches.
