Seven days in Karnataka covers Mysuru's palace, Coorg's coffee estates and Kabini's wildlife from Bengaluru, or Hampi and Badami for history lovers. Here is a day-by-day route with drive times and variations.

Seven days in Karnataka is ideal for the southern circuit from Bengaluru: one night in Mysuru, three in Coorg's coffee estates and two at Kabini for wildlife, with a final night near Bengaluru or a direct return. History lovers can instead spend the week around Hampi, Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal. Choose one region; the two are a long way apart.

Karnataka's southern circuit has short, scenic drives, while Hampi sits far to the north. This guide sets out a realistic southern route with drive times, an alternative for the north, what to cut and variations for families, couples and travellers with parents.

The southern route at a glance

DayBasePlan
1MysuruDrive from Bengaluru (about 3 hours), Srirangapatna en route, Mysuru Palace
2CoorgChamundi Hill, Devaraja market, drive to Coorg (about 3 hours)
3CoorgCoffee plantation walk, Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat at sunset
4CoorgDubare elephant camp, Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe
5KabiniDrive to Kabini (2–3 hours), afternoon jeep or boat safari
6KabiniMorning safari, rest, sunset boat safari on the Kabini backwaters
7DepartureMorning safari or birding, drive to Bengaluru (about 4–5 hours)

Days 1–2: Mysuru

Drive from Bengaluru to Mysuru, stopping at Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's island fortress. Visit the Mysuru Palace, one of India's grandest; on Sunday evenings and during festivals, it is illuminated with thousands of bulbs. On day two, climb or drive up Chamundi Hill, browse the Devaraja market's flowers and spices, then drive to Coorg.

Days 2–4: Coorg

Stay on or near a coffee plantation to experience Coorg at its best. Walk through coffee and pepper vines and learn how beans are grown and processed. Visit Abbey Falls and watch the sunset from Raja's Seat in Madikeri. On day four, visit the Dubare elephant camp on the Kaveri in the morning and the Namdroling Monastery's Golden Temple at Bylakuppe. Our Coorg's Enchanted Getaway is built around these slow plantation days.

Days 5–7: Kabini

Drive to Kabini, on the edge of Nagarhole National Park. Lodges here offer jeep safaris in the forest and boat safaris on the Kabini backwaters, where elephants gather at the water's edge, especially from March to June. Leopards, tigers, gaur, wild dogs and many birds live in the area. On day seven, take a final morning safari before driving back to Bengaluru.

Alternative: Hampi and the north

History lovers can spend the week in the north: three nights in Hampi for the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple's stone chariot, the Royal Enclosure and sunsets from Matanga Hill; then two nights at Badami for its cave temples, with day trips to Aihole and Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reach Hampi by overnight train from Bengaluru to Hosapete. November to February is the best time, before the heat.

Why this order works

Starting with Mysuru breaks the drive from Bengaluru and gives you the busiest sightseeing day first. Coorg follows with slow plantation days and cooler air, and Kabini comes last, so the trip ends with wildlife and quiet riverside evenings. The final drive back to Bengaluru is the longest, so plan a late-afternoon or evening flight. If you prefer, reverse the order and finish with Mysuru's palace lit up on a Sunday evening.

Coorg also pairs well with Wayanad in north Kerala, about three hours away, for a longer South India journey that adds forests, waterfalls and tea estates.

Whichever order you choose, keep one unscheduled afternoon in Coorg for a long lunch on a plantation veranda, a short walk through the estate or simply a cup of freshly brewed coffee overlooking the hills. These slow moments are what most travellers remember, and they leave room for a safari or drive to shift if needed.

Start each driving day early to enjoy cooler air.

What to cut if you are short on time

  • Five days: Mysuru (1) and Coorg (3), returning via Bengaluru.
  • Four days: Coorg (2) and Kabini (2).

Variations for families and parents

For families with older parents, choose plantation resorts with ground-floor cottages, limit safaris to one a day and plan afternoon rests. Children enjoy the elephants at Dubare and the Kabini boat safari. Expecting parents can choose the calm Nature Nurture babymoon at Shreyas near Bengaluru instead.

For couples

Couples can book a private-pool villa in Coorg and a riverside lodge at Kabini for a mix of romance and wildlife.

Timing this route

October to March is best for most of the route; Kabini is excellent from March to June. See our month-by-month Karnataka guide.

Getting there and around

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport is the gateway for the southern route, with flights from all Indian metros. Mysuru is about three hours away by road or by train. Within the circuit, a private car with a driver makes the drives between Mysuru, Coorg and Kabini easy, with stops at viewpoints and coffee shops. For Hampi, overnight trains to Hosapete are the most popular option.

Food along the route

Start with masala dosa, bisi bele bath and Mysore pak in Mysuru, and filter coffee everywhere. Coorg's Kodava cuisine includes pandi curry, kadambuttu and bamboo shoot curry, with vegetarian versions such as mushroom and jackfruit curries. Kabini lodges serve South Indian and North Indian buffets and adapt dishes on request.

Budget levers

  • Choose a plantation homestay in Coorg for local character at lower cost.
  • Travel midweek, when Kabini and Coorg are quieter.
  • Avoid Dasara week in Mysuru if you want lower prices.

Packing for this route

  • Light cotton clothing and a warm layer for Coorg evenings.
  • Neutral colours for Kabini safaris.
  • Rain gear and leech socks in the monsoon.
  • Insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Modest clothing for temples and the monastery.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for plantation paths.

Practical tips

  • Pack layers for cool Coorg evenings.
  • Book Kabini lodges early for weekends and summer.
  • Remove footwear at temples, and dress modestly.
