Karnataka is best from October to March, with Mysuru Dasara, cool coffee hills and comfortable days in Hampi. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Karnataka is from October to March, when most of the state is warm, dry and comfortable. Hampi is at its best from November to February; Coorg and Chikmagalur are pleasant from October to May and lush in the monsoon; and Mysuru is spectacular during Dasara, usually in September or October. April and May are hot in the plains and Hampi, while the monsoon from June to September is heavy in the hills and on the coast.

Karnataka spans coastal plains, the Western Ghats and the Deccan plateau, so its seasons differ by region. This guide gives a month-by-month view, explains how each region behaves, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

How the regions differ

  • Coffee hills (Coorg, Chikmagalur, Sakleshpur): cool and pleasant most of the year, very wet from June to September.
  • Mysuru and Bengaluru: mild climate year-round, with a moderate monsoon and pleasant winters.
  • Hampi and the north: hot and dry, with very hot summers from April to June.
  • The coast (Gokarna, Udupi, Murudeshwar): humid, with a heavy monsoon from June to September.
  • Wildlife reserves (Kabini, Bandipur, Nagarhole): good most of the year; summer offers better sightings near water.

Peak season: October to March

This is the most comfortable time for a classic Karnataka trip. Coorg's estates are green after the monsoon, and the coffee harvest from November to February fills the air with the scent of drying beans. Mysuru is pleasant for palace visits, and Hampi's ruins are best explored on cooler days from November to February. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks in Coorg and on the coast.

Mysuru Dasara

Mysuru Dasara is Karnataka's state festival and one of India's grandest celebrations. Over ten days, usually in September or October, the Mysuru Palace is illuminated with tens of thousands of bulbs each evening, cultural performances fill the city, and the festival ends with the Jamboo Savari, a procession led by caparisoned elephants carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari. Book accommodation well in advance and plan to see the palace lit up in the evening.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, October to February is best, with comfortable temperatures for palace visits, plantation walks and Hampi's ruins. Hampi involves a lot of walking in the sun, so start early and use vehicles where possible. In the monsoon, choose resorts with indoor activities and avoid slippery treks. Children usually enjoy the elephants at Dubare, coracle rides in Hampi and safaris at Kabini.

How far ahead to book

For Dasara, Christmas and New Year, book hotels in Mysuru and Coorg three to four months ahead. Kabini lodges also fill early in summer and on long weekends. In other peak months, two to three months is usually enough; in the monsoon, shorter lead times are fine.

Matching the trip to the season

From October to May, and in the misty monsoon for those who love rain, our Coorg's Enchanted Getaway makes the most of the coffee hills. Expecting parents can choose the Nature Nurture babymoon at Shreyas near Bengaluru, comfortable in any season thanks to the city's mild climate.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Visiting Hampi in May: the heat makes walking among the ruins exhausting.
  • Booking Mysuru late for Dasara: hotels fill months in advance.
  • Planning treks in Coorg in July: heavy rain and leeches make many trails difficult.
  • Swimming on the coast in the monsoon: the sea is rough and unsafe from June to September.
  • Combining Hampi with Coorg in a short trip: the two are far apart; give each its own season and time.

A final tip: Bengaluru's mild climate makes it a comfortable gateway in any month, so you can adjust your route — hills, heritage or coast — to suit the season.

In short

Choose November to February for Hampi and the coffee harvest, October for Mysuru Dasara, March to May for Kabini's wildlife and pleasant hills, and the monsoon for misty Coorg if you love rain. Keep Hampi and the southern circuit as separate trips unless you have more than a week.

If you can travel only in the monsoon, choose a plantation stay in Coorg or Chikmagalur with indoor activities, and save Hampi and the coast for the cooler, drier months.

What to pack by season

  • October to March: light clothes, a light layer for the hills and sun protection.
  • April and May: breathable cotton, a hat and plenty of water.
  • June to September: rain gear, quick-dry clothing and leech socks for walks.
  • All year: modest clothing for temples.
