Karnataka combines coffee estates in Coorg, the palaces of Mysuru, the ruins of Hampi, wildlife reserves and a quiet coast. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, how to reach and a sample route.

Karnataka is one of South India's most varied states: misty coffee estates in Coorg, the royal palace of Mysuru, the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, wildlife at Kabini and Bandipur, and quiet beaches at Gokarna. Plan four or five nights for a first trip covering Mysuru and Coorg, travel between October and March, and start from Bengaluru. Add Kabini for wildlife or Hampi for history if you have a week.

Karnataka's highlights are spread across the state, and Hampi in particular sits far from the southern circuit. This guide covers who Karnataka suits, the main regions, when to go, how to reach, food and route ideas that keep driving manageable.

Who Karnataka suits

  • Families: Mysuru Palace, the zoo, elephants at Dubare and easy plantation walks in Coorg.
  • Couples: plantation bungalows and private pool villas in Coorg and Chikmagalur.
  • History lovers: Hampi, Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal, Belur and Halebidu.
  • Wildlife enthusiasts: tigers, elephants and leopards in Kabini, Bandipur and Nagarhole.
  • Weekend travellers from Bengaluru: short drives to hills, coffee and wellness retreats.
  • Expecting parents: calm wellness stays close to the city, such as our Nature Nurture babymoon at Shreyas.

Coorg: coffee, mist and slow days

Coorg is the heart of Karnataka's coffee country, a hilly district of estates, forests and rivers often called the Scotland of India. The best way to experience it is to stay on or near a plantation: walk through coffee and pepper vines, learn how beans are processed and roasted, and enjoy Kodava food in the evenings. Visit Abbey Falls, the Namdroling Monastery's Golden Temple in Bylakuppe, and the Dubare elephant camp on the Kaveri, where mornings are best. Our Coorg's Enchanted Getaway is built around exactly this kind of slow stay.

When to go

October to March is the best time for most of Karnataka, with warm days and cool nights in the hills. Mysuru's Dasara festival, usually in September or October, brings the illuminated palace, processions and huge crowds. The monsoon, roughly June to September, makes Coorg and Chikmagalur lush and misty but very wet, with leeches on forest walks; some travellers love it for that. Hampi is best from November to February; from April it becomes very hot. Kabini is good year-round, with summer offering better wildlife sightings around the river.

How to reach

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport has flights from every Indian metro and is the natural gateway. Mysuru is about three hours away by road or a shorter trip by train. Coorg is five to six hours from Bengaluru by road, and Mangaluru airport is a closer alternative for the coast and Coorg. For Hampi, overnight trains to Hosapete are popular, and Hubballi and Jindal Vidyanagar airports offer limited flights. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to travel between destinations.

Food in Karnataka

Karnataka's food varies by region. In Mysuru and Bengaluru, try masala dosa, bisi bele bath, Mysore pak and filter coffee. Coorg's Kodava cuisine features pandi curry (pork), kadambuttu (rice dumplings) and bamboo shoot curry, with vegetarian options such as mushroom and jackfruit curries. Udupi cuisine on the coast is vegetarian and widely loved, and Mangaluru is famous for seafood. Jain travellers will find vegetarian food easy across the state; ask hotels about onion- and garlic-free preparation.

Hampi and the north

Hampi, once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, is one of India's most atmospheric historic sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ruins spread across a surreal landscape of giant granite boulders, banana plantations and the Tungabhadra river. Highlights include the Virupaksha Temple, still in worship; the Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars; the Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stables; and the Queen's Bath. Climb Matanga Hill or Hemakuta Hill for sunrise or sunset, and take a round coracle ride on the river.

Hampi deserves two full days. Use a guide for the main temple complex and hire an electric cart, bicycle or car for the wider site. From Hampi, Badami's cave temples, Aihole's early temples and Pattadakal (another UNESCO site) make a rewarding two-night extension for architecture lovers. In the Hoysala heartland, Belur and Halebidu have some of the finest temple carving in India, often combined with Chikmagalur.

With parents and children

Karnataka is easy for multi-generational trips. Mysuru's palace and gardens are flat and accessible, Coorg's plantation resorts often have ground-floor cottages, and Kabini's boat safaris are seated and gentle. Hampi involves a lot of walking in the sun, so hire a guide with a vehicle or a battery car where available, start early and rest in the afternoon. Children usually enjoy the elephants at Dubare, the coracle rides in Hampi and the safaris at Kabini.

Practical tips

  • Pack light layers for Coorg and Chikmagalur; nights can be cool.
  • Carry rain gear and leech socks for monsoon visits to the hills.
  • Remove footwear at temples, and dress modestly.
  • Book Kabini lodges and Dasara stays well in advance.
  • Buy coffee, spices and Mysore silk from estates and government emporiums.

Karnataka rewards travellers who give each region time. For more ideas beyond the classic circuits, see our guide to finding travel experiences off the usual itinerary. With one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, your drives, stays and safaris are arranged so the trip feels as slow as the coffee hills themselves.

Your questions, answered

How many days are enough for Karnataka?

Four or five nights covers Mysuru and Coorg comfortably. Seven nights lets you add Kabini or Hampi. Hampi deserves at least two full days on its own.

What is the best time to visit Karnataka?

October to March is the best period for most of the state, with pleasant weather. Coorg is lush in the monsoon from June to September but very wet. Hampi is best from November to February, before the heat. Mysuru is busiest during Dasara in September or October.

How far is Coorg from Bengaluru?

Coorg (Madikeri) is roughly five to six hours by road from Bengaluru, often via Mysuru. Mysuru is about three hours from Bengaluru by road, or less by train.

Is Karnataka good for a family trip?

Yes. Mysuru's palace and zoo, Coorg's coffee estates and elephant camp, and Kabini's safaris all suit families. Keep drives short, and choose resorts with activities for children.
