Kerala in 7 Days: A Practical Itinerary
- Kerala itinerary
- Kerala 7 days
- Munnar
- Alleppey
- Kochi
Seven days in Kerala covers Kochi, the tea hills of Munnar, the spice gardens of Thekkady, a night on an Alleppey houseboat and a quiet beach. Here is a day-by-day route with realistic drive times and variations.
Seven days in Kerala is enough for the classic loop: one night in Kochi, two in Munnar's tea hills, one in Thekkady's spice country, one on a houseboat in Alleppey and two at a quiet beach such as Marari. Fly into and out of Kochi, travel with a private driver, and keep each day to one main drive. This pace leaves time for the slow moments that make Kerala special.
Kerala's distances look short on a map but involve winding hill roads, so the biggest mistake is trying to add Wayanad, Varkala or north Kerala to a one-week trip. This itinerary covers the essentials with realistic drive times, explains what to cut and offers variations for families, couples and travellers with parents.
The route at a glance
| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kochi | Arrive, Fort Kochi walk, Chinese fishing nets at sunset, Kathakali show |
| 2 | Munnar | Drive to Munnar (about 4 hours) via Cheeyappara waterfalls, tea estate walk |
| 3 | Munnar | Eravikulam National Park, tea museum, Mattupetty, viewpoints |
| 4 | Thekkady | Drive to Thekkady (3–4 hours), spice plantation tour, cultural show |
| 5 | Alleppey | Periyar boat ride in the morning, drive to Alleppey, board a private houseboat |
| 6 | Marari | Leave the houseboat, short drive to Marari, beach afternoon |
| 7 | Marari to Kochi | Slow morning, village walk, drive to Kochi airport (about 1.5 hours) |
Day 1: Kochi
Arrive at Kochi airport and head to Fort Kochi, about an hour away. Walk through the old streets past St Francis Church, the Dutch Cemetery and colonial bungalows, and visit Mattancherry's Jew Town and spice warehouses. Watch the Chinese fishing nets at sunset, then see a Kathakali performance, arriving early to watch the elaborate make-up being applied.
Days 2–3: Munnar
The drive to Munnar takes about four hours, climbing through spice gardens and past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls. Spend the afternoon walking through tea estates. On day three, visit Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr (the park usually closes for a period during the tahr calving season, often around February to March), the tea museum and Mattupetty Dam. End the day at a viewpoint such as Top Station or Lockhart Gap.
Day 4: Thekkady
Drive from Munnar to Thekkady (three to four hours) through cardamom and pepper country. In the afternoon, take a guided spice plantation tour and, in the evening, watch a Kalaripayattu martial arts or Kathakali performance. Thekkady is home to Periyar Tiger Reserve; tiger sightings are rare, but elephants, bison and birdlife are common.
Day 5: Alleppey houseboat
Take an early boat ride on Periyar Lake, then drive to Alleppey (three to four hours) and board a private houseboat around midday. Cruise through backwater canals, past paddy fields and villages, with freshly cooked Kerala meals on board. Tell the crew in advance about vegetarian or Jain preferences. Houseboats moor for the night, and the evening is peaceful and quiet.
Days 6–7: Marari Beach
After breakfast on the houseboat, drive about 30 minutes to Marari, a quiet beach with fishing villages and palm groves. Spend the afternoon relaxing, perhaps with an Ayurvedic massage. On day seven, take a village walk or cycle, then drive to Kochi airport (about 1.5 hours) for your flight.
Why this order works
Starting in Kochi lets you recover from the flight with an easy first day in the city. Heading up to the hills next means the longest drives come early, when energy is high, and the trip winds down from the cool hills to the backwaters and the beach, ending with rest rather than a rush to the airport. Marari is also close to Kochi airport, so the last day is relaxed.
What to cut if you are short on time
- Five days: skip Thekkady and drive from Munnar to Alleppey directly (about five hours).
- Six days: reduce Marari to one night.
- Do not add: Wayanad, Varkala or north Kerala to a seven-day trip.
Other routes
For a different week, Unexplored Kerala heads north to Bekal and Kannur, The Sacred Flames of Kerala centres on Theyyam season, and A Culinary Portrait of Kerala follows tea, spice and kitchens. Couples can end at Just Us by the Sea at Marari.
Variations for families and parents
For families with older parents, keep hill nights to two, choose resorts with ground-floor rooms or lifts, and break the Munnar drive with stops. Children enjoy elephant sightings in Thekkady, the tea factory in Munnar and the houseboat. Choose a houseboat with two or more bedrooms for families.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples can upgrade to a private-pool villa in Munnar, choose a premium houseboat with a single bedroom, and add a candlelit dinner on the beach at Marari. October to March is the most romantic weather.
Timing this route
This route works best from October to March, with pleasant weather on the coast and cool days in the hills. The monsoon, from June to September, is lush but wet. See our month-by-month Kerala guide for details.
Food along the route
Kerala's food is a highlight of this route. Try appam and stew in Kochi, a banana-leaf sadya, Malabar parotta and fresh coconut-based curries. In Munnar, tea-estate kitchens serve simple Kerala meals with vegetables from their gardens; in Thekkady, spice-garden visits often end with a home-cooked lunch. On the houseboat, the crew cooks fresh Kerala fish curry or vegetarian dishes on board. Jain travellers should tell hotels and houseboats in advance, since many curries use onion and garlic.
Budget levers
- Choose a deluxe rather than luxury houseboat; the backwater experience is the same.
- Travel in October, November, February or March rather than the Christmas peak.
- Stay in a plantation homestay in Munnar for local character at lower cost.
Practical tips
- Pack a light jacket for Munnar evenings and an umbrella in any season.
- Dress modestly at temples; some restrict entry to Hindus.
- Carry insect repellent for the backwaters.

Your questions, answered
Is 7 days enough for Kerala?
Seven days is enough for the classic loop: Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, a houseboat night in Alleppey and a beach. It works best if you avoid adding a third hill station or north Kerala.
How long is the drive from Kochi to Munnar?
The drive from Kochi to Munnar takes roughly four hours, depending on traffic and stops, on a winding hill road. Thekkady is three to four hours from Munnar, and Alleppey about three to four hours from Thekkady.
Is one night on a houseboat enough?
Yes. One night on a private houseboat gives you the full backwater experience: cruising, meals on board and a peaceful night on the water. Many travellers combine it with a night at a lakeside resort.
Which airport should I use for a Kerala trip?
Fly into Kochi, which has the best connections and sits close to Fort Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey. Thiruvananthapuram is better for trips focused on Kovalam and Varkala.
