A Karnataka trip costs most in hotels — especially coffee-estate stays in Coorg and Chikkamagaluru and jungle lodges at Kabini — and in a car and driver. Hampi, Mysuru and the coast are good value. Mysuru Dasara and long weekends, when Bengaluru heads out of town, are the priciest times.

Karnataka offers palaces, coffee hills, ruins, wildlife and beaches at every budget. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Bengaluru has flights from every major city, and Mangaluru serves the coast. Trains to Mysuru, Hosapete for Hampi and the Konkan coast are good value. See our guide to reaching Karnataka.

Hotels and lodges

Coorg and Chikkamagaluru have homestays on coffee estates at moderate prices and luxury resorts at the top end. Kabini's jungle lodges usually include meals and safaris. Mysuru and Hampi offer good-value hotels and a few heritage resorts. Coastal towns such as Gokarna range from beach huts to boutique stays.

Car and driver

A private car with a driver suits the coffee hills and wildlife areas, where public transport is limited. The quote should include fuel, allowances, tolls and parking. The Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway saves time but has tolls.

Safaris and wildlife

Kabini, Nagarhole and Bandipur offer jeep and boat safaris. Lodge packages usually bundle safaris; government safaris booked separately cost less but sell out. Dandeli in the north offers rafting and birdwatching at moderate cost.

Hampi and the heritage north

Hampi's ruins spread over a large area; tickets for the main paid sites are modest, and hiring a bicycle, moped or autorickshaw for the day is cheap. Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal are good-value additions with modest entry fees.

Food

Darshinis and udupi restaurants serve excellent, inexpensive vegetarian food: masala dosa, idli-vada and filter coffee. Try Kodava cuisine in Coorg and Mangalorean seafood on the coast. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy to find. Resort dining costs more.

Coffee estates and plantation stays

Staying on a working coffee estate in Coorg or Chikkamagaluru, with plantation walks and home-cooked Kodava or Malnad food, is a highlight. Homestays offer good value; boutique estate resorts with pools and spas cost much more. Our Coorg's Enchanted Getaway is built around an estate stay.

How your route changes the cost

Mysuru and Coorg make a compact, good-value trip from Bengaluru. Adding Kabini adds a lodge night or two. Hampi and Badami add an overnight train or a long drive, and the coast adds Mangaluru or Goa connections.

How many days to budget for

Five to six nights covers Mysuru, Coorg and Kabini. Hampi needs two to three nights on its own. Fewer hotel changes reduce car costs.

Weekends from Bengaluru

Coorg, Chikkamagaluru, Mysuru and Kabini are popular weekend escapes from Bengaluru, so Friday and Saturday nights cost more and roads are busy. Midweek stays are cheaper and quieter.

The coast

Karnataka's coast, from Mangaluru through Udupi and Murudeshwar to Gokarna, is good value. Simple beach stays in Gokarna and temple towns such as Udupi offer low-cost accommodation and excellent vegetarian food. The Konkan Railway keeps transport affordable, and Goa is close for those combining the two.

Cheaper ways to get around

Karnataka State Road Transport buses, including comfortable overnight services, link Bengaluru with Mysuru, Coorg, Hampi and the coast at low cost. In Mysuru, autorickshaws are cheap, and in Hampi, bicycles and mopeds are the best value. These suit flexible travellers; families usually prefer a car.

Belur, Halebidu and Shravanabelagola

The Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, with their intricate carvings, and the Jain pilgrimage centre of Shravanabelagola fit neatly between Bengaluru, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru. Entry is free or modest, and a local guide at Belur and Halebidu costs little but makes the carvings far easier to understand.

Mysuru Dasara

During Dasara in autumn, Mysuru Palace is illuminated and the city hosts processions and cultural events. Hotels fill and prices rise, so book early if you plan to attend.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Nature Nurture babymoon at Shreyas is a calm wellness stay near Bengaluru. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Travel midweek.
  2. Avoid Dasara and New Year unless you want them.
  3. Use trains to Mysuru and Hampi.
  4. Mix homestays with one resort night.
  5. Book government safaris early.
  6. Eat at darshinis and udupi restaurants.
  7. Hire bicycles or autos in Hampi.
  8. Consider the monsoon in the coffee hills.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles and family rooms. Children enjoy Kabini safaris and Mysuru Palace; parents may prefer shorter drives and estate stays with easy access.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on an estate resort in Coorg or a jungle lodge at Kabini and save on transport.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, safari inclusions, estate or lodge meal plans, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often leaves out safaris or uses homestays far from the sights.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Karnataka trip?

Hotels are usually the biggest cost, especially coffee-estate resorts in Coorg and Chikkamagaluru and jungle lodges at Kabini, which often include meals and safaris. A car and driver comes next.

Is Hampi expensive to visit?

No. Hampi is one of Karnataka's best-value destinations, with modest monument tickets, simple guesthouses and cheap bicycle or autorickshaw hire. Heritage resorts nearby cost more.

Are Kabini jungle lodges worth the cost?

For wildlife lovers, yes: lodges usually include meals, jeep or boat safaris and naturalists. They cost more than hotels elsewhere, so one or two nights is a common compromise.

When is Karnataka cheapest to visit?

The monsoon months, roughly June to September, bring lower prices in the coffee hills and on the coast. Mysuru Dasara, Christmas–New Year and long weekends from Bengaluru are the most expensive.
