Tamil Nadu Honeymoon: Romantic Routes and Stays
- Tamil Nadu honeymoon
- Ooty
- Kodaikanal
- Mahabalipuram
A Tamil Nadu honeymoon works best with a hill station such as Ooty, Coonoor or Kodaikanal, a heritage stay in Chettinad or by the sea at Mahabalipuram, and perhaps the temples of Madurai. Here is how to choose the month, the stays, the moments worth booking and the budget levers.
A Tamil Nadu honeymoon works best with a hill station such as Ooty, Coonoor or Kodaikanal, paired with a heritage stay in a Chettinad mansion or a beach base at Mahabalipuram, and perhaps the temples of Madurai. Six to eight nights is the right shape.
Tamil Nadu combines misty hills and tea estates with temple towns, grand mansions and a long coastline. It suits couples who enjoy culture as well as quiet. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.
The short answer: fewer bases, more time
For a honeymoon, two bases over six to eight nights is the right shape: three or four nights in the hills and three in Chettinad, Madurai or Mahabalipuram.
Coimbatore is the gateway to Ooty and Coonoor, Madurai to Kodaikanal and Chettinad, and Chennai to Mahabalipuram.
Our Timeless Tamil Nadu trip follows a similar shape, and the Tamil Nadu 7-day itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.
Which month suits your wedding date?
Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Tamil Nadu.
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to December | pleasant plains; north-east monsoon rain on the coast. |
| January to March | dry and pleasant across the state; good for temples and Chettinad. |
| April to June | hot plains; the hills are at their best. |
| July to September | mild hills and warm plains. |
Our best time to visit Tamil Nadu guide covers each month in more detail.
Romantic bases and what each offers
Ooty has gardens, a lake and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Coonoor is quieter, with tea estates and viewpoints. Kodaikanal has a star-shaped lake and forest walks. Chettinad has grand mansions and heritage hotels around Karaikudi. Madurai has the Meenakshi temple and lively streets. Mahabalipuram has shore temples and beach resorts near Chennai.Honeymoon routes that work
Six nights, hills and heritage: three nights in Coonoor or Ooty and three in Chettinad. Seven nights, lake and temples: four nights in Kodaikanal and three in Madurai and Chettinad. Six nights, coast and hills: three nights in Mahabalipuram and three in Ooty.Getting there and around
Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai have airports with flights from most metros. A private car is easiest between bases; hill roads are winding. Our how to reach Tamil Nadu guide covers flights and trains from Indian metros.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, climbs from Mettupalayam to Ooty through tunnels and tea gardens. Tickets sell out quickly in season, so book early. The section between Coonoor and Ooty is a shorter option.
A Chettinad mansion stay
The Chettiar mansions around Karaikudi have grand courtyards, Burmese teak, Athangudi tiles and Italian marble. Heritage hotels in restored mansions offer slow days, village walks and Chettinad meals, including vegetarian ones.
Madurai and the temple towns
Madurai's Meenakshi temple is one of India's great temple complexes, with towering gopurams and an evening ceremony in which the deity is carried to rest. Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar temple and the temple towns of the Cauvery delta can be added on a longer trip. Visit early and late to avoid heat and crowds.
Coonoor or Ooty?
Ooty is livelier, with gardens, a lake and shops, but busy in summer and on weekends. Coonoor is smaller and quieter, with tea-estate bungalows, viewpoints such as Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock, and the Sim's Park garden. Many couples prefer to stay in Coonoor and visit Ooty for a day.
Mahabalipuram by the sea
Mahabalipuram, about an hour and a half south of Chennai, has the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance and the Five Rathas carved from rock. Beach resorts along the East Coast Road suit couples, with sunsets by the sea and easy day trips to Pondicherry's French Quarter and to Kanchipuram for silk.
Choosing the right stay
For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the star rating. A tea-estate bungalow in Coonoor, a lake-view room in Kodaikanal, a restored Chettinad mansion and a sea-facing room at Mahabalipuram make the trip.
Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.
Moments worth booking in advance
- The Nilgiri toy train: through the tea hills.
- A boat on Kodaikanal lake: in the evening.
- The night ceremony at the Meenakshi temple: in Madurai.
- Sunset at the Shore Temple: in Mahabalipuram.
- A private photo session: in a Chettinad courtyard.
Vegetarian and Jain dinners
Vegetarian couples eat very well: tiffin, banana-leaf meals, filter coffee and temple-town food, plus vegetarian Chettinad dishes in heritage hotels. Our Tamil Nadu food guide has the details.
Where the honeymoon budget goes
The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:
- Avoid summer school holidays in the hills.
- Spend on one heritage or view room.
- Book the toy train early.
- Choose two bases rather than four.
- Eat at local restaurants.
Our Tamil Nadu trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.
Keeping the pace gentle
A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Hill drives are winding, so travel in daylight and keep sightseeing light on travel days.
Temple towns are hot by midday; visit early and late.
Honeymoon mistakes to avoid
- Too many bases, leaving more time on the road than in places.
- Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
- Driving hill roads after dark.
- Planning the coast during heavy north-east monsoon rain.
Practical details couples forget
No visa is needed for Indian travellers, but carry government photo ID for flights, hotels and monuments. If one partner has recently changed their name, carry a marriage certificate along with ID, as some hotels ask couples for it. Travel insurance and a small medical kit are sensible.

How Much Does a Tamil Nadu Trip Cost? Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury
A Tamil Nadu trip is good value: the main costs are hotels — especially Chettinad mansions and heritage stays — a car and driver for the temple route, and getting there. Temple entry, food and trains are inexpensive. Pongal, Christmas and the hill-station summer are the priciest times.
