Tamil Nadu is most comfortable from November to February, with Pongal in January and the Chennai music season in December. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, festivals and the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Tamil Nadu is from December to February, when temperatures are comfortable and the north-east monsoon has eased. January brings Pongal, the harvest festival, and December and January are the heart of Chennai's music and dance season. October and November are rainy on the coast, April to June is very hot on the plains, and the hill stations are best from March to June.

Tamil Nadu's climate differs from much of India because it receives most of its rain from the north-east monsoon. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Winter (December to February): warm days, cooler evenings, festivals and temple rituals at their most comfortable.
  • Summer (March to June): hot to very hot on the plains, best time for hill stations.
  • South-west monsoon (June to September): relatively light rain on the plains, heavier in the Nilgiris.
  • North-east monsoon (October to December): heavy rain on the coast, risk of cyclones and flooding.

Peak season: December to February

This is the most comfortable time for temple visits in Madurai, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram and Rameswaram, and for exploring Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry and Chettinad. Mornings and evenings are pleasant, and festivals fill the calendar. In December and January, Chennai's Margazhi season brings hundreds of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam performances, and the Mamallapuram Dance Festival stages classical dance against the shore monuments. Pongal in mid-January is a joyful time to experience Tamil village traditions.

The north-east monsoon

From October to December, the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain to Chennai, Pondicherry and the coast, with occasional cyclones and flooding. Inland temple towns are less affected but can still see heavy showers. Travel is possible, but keep plans flexible, check forecasts and avoid long coastal drives during warnings. The landscape turns green, and temple festivals such as Karthigai Deepam light up Tiruvannamalai.

Hill stations by season

Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal are pleasant from March to June, when the plains are hot, and popular with families during school holidays. The Ooty Flower Show in May draws large crowds. From October to December, the hills can be wet and misty, and from December to February, nights are cold but days are often clear and sunny. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs year-round, though monsoon landslides occasionally disrupt services.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, December to February is best: temples involve barefoot walking on stone floors that become very hot in summer. In summer, take older travellers to the hill stations instead. Children enjoy Mahabalipuram's carvings, Pondicherry's promenade and the Nilgiri toy train in cooler months.

How far ahead to book

For Pongal, the Margazhi season and Christmas and New Year, book heritage hotels and Chennai stays two to three months ahead. For hill stations in May, book three to four months ahead. In other months, shorter lead times are usually fine.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning a coastal trip in November without flexibility: heavy rain and cyclones can disrupt travel.
  • Visiting temples at midday: many close in the afternoon, and floors are hot.
  • Booking Ooty late for May: the hill station fills during summer holidays.
  • Skipping evening rituals: they are often the most memorable part of a temple visit.

In short

Choose December to February for the temple circuit and festivals, March to June for the hill stations, and keep October and November flexible because of the monsoon on the coast.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Christmas and New Year fall in the comfortable season and coincide with the Margazhi music season in Chennai, so book early. Pongal in mid-January is a joyful time to visit temple towns and villages. Diwali in October or November may coincide with heavy rain on the coast. Summer school holidays in May and June are ideal for the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal rather than the plains.

Matching the trip to the season

From December to March, our Timeless Tamil Nadu: Temples, Traditions and Treasures is at its best, with comfortable weather for temples, Chettinad mansions and craft workshops.

Whatever the month, plan temple visits for early mornings and evenings, keep the hottest hours for heritage hotels, museums or rest, and allow at least two nights in Madurai so you can see the evening ceremony at the Meenakshi Temple without rushing.

Pondicherry is pleasant from December to March, with cool sea breezes in the French Quarter and calm evenings on the promenade.

What to pack by season

  • December to February: light cotton clothing and a light layer for evenings.
  • March to June: breathable clothes, a hat and warm layers for the hills.
  • October to December: rain gear and quick-dry clothing.
  • All year: modest clothing and socks for hot temple floors.
