A Tamil Nadu trip is good value. The main costs are hotels — especially Chettinad mansions and heritage stays near the temples — a car and driver for the temple route, and getting there by flight or train. Temple entry, food and trains are inexpensive. Pongal, Christmas and the hill-station summer season are the priciest times.

Tamil Nadu offers temples, heritage towns, coast and hills at prices that compare well with most of India. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Chennai has flights from every major city, and Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore have good connections. Trains are excellent value. Flying into Chennai and out of Madurai saves a long return drive. See our guide to reaching Tamil Nadu.

Hotels and heritage stays

Temple towns such as Madurai, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam have simple hotels and a few heritage properties. Chettinad's restored mansions near Karaikudi cost more but are memorable. Puducherry's French Quarter has boutique stays, and Ooty and Kodaikanal range from guesthouses to colonial-era hotels.

Car and driver

A car and driver who knows temple timings is the most comfortable way to travel. The quote should include fuel, allowances, tolls and parking. Distances such as Chennai to Madurai are long, so trains or flights on the longest legs reduce driving days.

Temples and guides

General entry to most temples is free or inexpensive. Special darshan tickets shorten queues on busy days, and some temples charge for cameras. A local guide at the Meenakshi Temple, the Brihadeeswarar Temple or Mahabalipuram adds a great deal at modest cost.

Chettinad

Chettinad's mansions, Athangudi tile workshops and antique markets around Karaikudi are a highlight. Mansion stays usually include Chettinad meals. Our Timeless Tamil Nadu: Temples, Traditions and Treasures includes a heritage stay.

The Nilgiris and Kodaikanal

Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal are cool escapes with tea gardens and lakes. Hotel prices rise sharply in April and May. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, needs advance booking and is good value.

Food

Tamil Nadu is one of India's best-value food states: banana-leaf meals, idli, dosa and filter coffee at local restaurants. Chettinad cooking is a speciality. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy to find, especially in temple towns.

Shopping

Kanchipuram silk saris, Thanjavur paintings and bronzes, Chettinad cotton and Athangudi tiles are popular buys. Prices vary greatly with quality, so buy from cooperatives and reputable shops.

How your route changes the cost

Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Chettinad and Madurai make a classic week. Adding Rameswaram, Kanyakumari or the Nilgiris adds driving days and hotels.

How many days to budget for

Seven nights covers the classic temple route. Add three nights for the hills or the deep south.

Puducherry

Puducherry, about three hours from Chennai, adds French Quarter cafés, beaches and Auroville. Boutique hotels cost more than temple-town hotels, and weekends are busy with visitors from Chennai and Bengaluru.

Rameswaram and Kanyakumari

Rameswaram, across the sea on Pamban Island, and Kanyakumari, at India's southern tip, add pilgrimage and coastal sights. Both have simple hotels at modest prices, with a few better ones. Trains reach both towns cheaply, but each adds one or two nights to the trip.

Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram

Mahabalipuram's Shore Temple and rock carvings charge modest entry, and Kanchipuram's temples are free or inexpensive. Both are easy day trips from Chennai, so you can see them without extra hotel nights.

Festivals

Pongal in mid-January, temple festivals such as the Chithirai festival in Madurai, and Karthigai Deepam at Tiruvannamalai bring crowds and higher hotel prices. Book early if you want to see them, or avoid those dates for better value.

Cheaper ways to get around

Trains link Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai and Coimbatore cheaply, and state buses are frequent. Chennai's metro and suburban trains are inexpensive. These suit flexible travellers; parents usually prefer a car.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Timeless Tamil Nadu covers the classic route. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Avoid Pongal and Christmas weeks.
  2. Fly into Chennai and out of Madurai.
  3. Use trains on long legs.
  4. Choose one mansion night.
  5. Hire guides only at the major temples.
  6. Eat at local restaurants.
  7. Buy silk from cooperatives.
  8. Visit the hills outside April and May.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles. Parents should visit temples early or late, when the stone floors are cooler, and avoid very long drives.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a Chettinad mansion or a Puducherry boutique hotel and save on transport.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, temple guides and darshan tickets, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means simple hotels far from the temples.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Tamil Nadu trip?

Hotels and a car and driver are usually the biggest costs, especially if you stay in a Chettinad mansion or a heritage hotel near the temples. Food, trains and temple entry are inexpensive.

Are temples expensive to visit?

No. Most temples charge little or nothing for general entry. Special darshan queues, camera fees and offerings add small amounts, and a local guide is good value at the larger temples.

Is a Chettinad mansion stay worth the cost?

For many travellers, a night in a restored Chettiar mansion, with its architecture and home-style Chettinad food, is a highlight. One or two nights is enough to enjoy it without stretching the budget.

When is Tamil Nadu cheapest to visit?

April to September usually brings lower prices on the plains, though it is hot. Pongal, the Christmas–New Year period and the summer holidays in Ooty and Kodaikanal are the most expensive.
