Spain is easy to enjoy with parents if you plan around heat and late meal times: two bases such as Madrid and Seville or Barcelona, fast AVE trains with assistance, seated experiences and Indian food in the big cities. Here is a gentle-pace guide.
Spain is easy to enjoy with parents if you plan around heat and late meal times. Choose two bases, such as Madrid and Seville or Barcelona and Madrid, travel by fast AVE train with assistance if needed, and keep each day to one main outing in spring or autumn.
Spain's cities are lively, sunny and full of art and architecture, with excellent trains between them. Summer heat in Andalusia and Madrid, long walks at monuments and dinners that start at nine o'clock are the main challenges for older travellers. This guide shows how to plan around them.
The short answer: fewer bases, gentle days
For a week with parents, choose two bases: three or four nights in Madrid or Barcelona and three in Seville, with day trips such as Toledo or Córdoba by train. Each move takes half a day with luggage, so fewer moves means more time enjoying Spain.
Couples travelling with parents can also combine Spain and Portugal, with Lisbon and Seville as the two bases.
| Experience | Effort | Why it suits parents |
|---|---|---|
| Hop-on hop-off bus | Seated | Covers the main sights with little walking |
| Sagrada Família | Moderate | Lifts to towers on some tickets; book timed entry |
| Prado Museum | Moderate | Wheelchairs available; plan a short visit |
| Alhambra | High | Long walks and slopes; book timed entry |
| Horse-carriage ride in Seville | Seated | Old town and Plaza de España |
| Flamenco show | Seated | Evening culture without walking |
Choosing the bases
Madrid is flat in the centre, with grand museums and parks. Seville's old town is compact and flat, with horse carriages and a riverside promenade. Barcelona combines Gaudí, the sea and good transport, though some sights are uphill. Granada is beautiful but hilly, so choose a hotel with car access.
Choosing hotels
Choose hotels with lifts and step-free entrances, close to taxi ranks and the main sights. Ask for rooms near the lift, walk-in showers if needed, and twin beds or connecting rooms. In Seville and Granada, old-town hotels may have steps or narrow lanes without car access.
Trains and assistance
AVE high-speed trains link Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga and Granada. Renfe offers an assistance service (Atendo) for travellers with reduced mobility at major stations if booked in advance. Porters are scarce, so travel light.
Meal times
Spaniards eat lunch around two o'clock and dinner from nine. For parents, make lunch the main meal, have an early snack or tapas in the evening, and choose hotels near restaurants that serve earlier. Indian restaurants usually open earlier in the evening.
Seated experiences
Hop-on hop-off buses, horse-carriage rides in Seville, a flamenco show and a private car to Toledo or the white villages give parents the classic views with little walking.
Wheelchairs and mobility
Major museums such as the Prado and the Reina Sofía offer wheelchairs and step-free routes, and many monuments have lifts. Old towns have cobblestones and slopes, so a sturdy wheelchair works best.
When to go
April, May, October and early November are ideal: warm days, mild evenings and fewer crowds. Winter is mild in the south. July and August are very hot inland. Our best time to visit Spain guide has more.
Flights from India
Choose flights with sensible departure times, request airport wheelchair assistance if needed, and pre-book seats together. Flights reach Madrid and Barcelona with one stop, usually through the Gulf or Europe. A daytime arrival makes the first evening easier.
Budget
Spend where comfort matters most: central hotels with lifts, private transfers and timed or skip-the-line entries. Save with lunch as the main meal and fewer bases. Our Spain trip cost guide explains each cost.
Easy day trips
Toledo from Madrid and Córdoba from Seville are the easiest day trips for parents. Toledo is hilly, so a private car to the top of the old town and escalators from the car parks help. Córdoba's Mezquita is flat inside and spectacular. Choose one day trip per base at most.
Combining with Portugal
Spain and Portugal combine well with parents: Lisbon and Seville are linked by a short flight or a long, scenic drive. Allow at least three nights in each, and use a private transfer if parents prefer not to fly. Our Lisbon to Madrid trip covers both countries.
Visa for parents
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Spain. Parents attend biometrics in person, so plan appointments that suit them, and apply early in peak season. Travel medical insurance is required for a Schengen visa. Check current requirements on the official Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai website, and read our Spain trip guide from India.
Health, medicines and insurance
Carry enough prescription medicines for the trip plus a few extra days, in hand luggage, with prescriptions. Choose insurance with generous medical cover, ideally including pre-existing conditions. Pharmacies are easy to find in towns across Spain.
Pacing each day
Plan one main outing a day, starting mid-morning, with a rest in the afternoon. Keep one free day in each base. Long flights from India tire older travellers, so make the first day very light.
A sample slow route
Day 1: arrive in Madrid and rest. Day 2: the Prado with a guide, then the Retiro Park. Day 3: a car day trip to Toledo. Day 4: AVE train to Seville. Day 5: the Alcázar and cathedral with timed entries, then a horse-carriage ride. Day 6: a free morning and a flamenco evening. Day 7: AVE back to Madrid for the flight home.
Mistakes to avoid
- Changing hotels every night or two.
- Travelling in July and August heat.
- Planning the Alhambra without checking the walking involved.
- Choosing old-town hotels without car access.
- Waiting for late dinners every night.
What to pack
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for cobblestones, layers, a light rain jacket, a sun hat, sunglasses, medicines, and a compact walking stick or folding seat if parents use one. A lightweight wheelchair can be useful for long museum days.
Food parents will enjoy
Indian restaurants in Madrid and Barcelona serve familiar food. Spanish menus include vegetarian tortilla, patatas bravas, gazpacho and vegetable paella, but ask about ham and fish stock. Carry theplas and ready-to-eat meals for day trips. Our Spain vegetarian food guide has more.

Madrid and Seville are flat in their centres and easy by taxi. Barcelona has hills around Park Güell and Montjuïc but good transport. Granada's Alhambra involves long walks and slopes.
How many hotel changes should we plan?
Two bases for a week, such as Madrid and Seville, or Barcelona and Madrid, with day trips by train or car.
