A Spain trip from India costs most in flights, hotels in Barcelona and Madrid, high-speed trains to Andalusia and timed tickets for the Sagrada Família and the Alhambra. Spain is usually better value than France or Switzerland, but timing and booking still decide the total.

A Spain trip from India costs most in four places: return flights, hotels in Barcelona and Madrid, high-speed trains to Andalusia, and timed tickets for sights such as the Sagrada Família and the Alhambra. Spain is usually better value than France or Switzerland, but your month, how early you book and where you stay still move the total more than anything else.

Spain rewards planning. Booking key tickets early, choosing the right neighbourhoods and eating the Spanish way can make a week comfortable on a moderate budget. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season and exchange rate; use this as a framework when you compare quotes.

Flights

Most flights from India to Spain have one stop, via the Gulf, Istanbul or a European hub, into Madrid or Barcelona. Fares rise for May and June and around Christmas. Booking three to four months ahead usually helps. Flying into Barcelona and out of Madrid, or combining Spain with Portugal on an open-jaw ticket, saves a day of backtracking.

Hotels

Barcelona is usually the most expensive city, especially near the Gothic Quarter and the beach. Madrid, Seville and Granada offer better value. Prices spike during Seville's Easter week and April fair, Pamplona's San Fermín and major football matches. Family rooms can be small, so apartments are worth considering.

Trains and local transport

Spain has one of Europe's largest high-speed rail networks. AVE and other high-speed trains link Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, Córdoba and Valencia in about two and a half to three hours, and competition from newer operators has brought lower fares on some routes. Book early for the best prices. Cities have efficient metros, and walking is the best way to see old towns.

Sights and tours

The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona need timed tickets booked well ahead; the Alhambra often sells out weeks in advance. Park Güell, Casa Batlló, the Prado and Seville's Real Alcázar also use timed entry. A flamenco show in Seville or Madrid is a popular evening extra. Guided tours cost more but explain the history and skip queues.

Food

Spain is good value for food if you eat as locals do. The menú del día, a set lunch on weekdays, is the best deal. Tapas bars let you sample small dishes cheaply. Vegetarians should ask about ham and fish stock, which appear in many dishes. Madrid and Barcelona have many Indian restaurants, especially in Lavapiés and El Raval. Jain travellers should plan meals ahead.

Shopping and tax refunds

Visitors from outside the EU can often reclaim VAT on eligible purchases. Ask for the tax-free form when you pay and validate it electronically at the airport before you check in. Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia and Madrid's Gran Vía are popular, and outlet villages near both cities offer discounts.

The islands

Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife and Gran Canaria add short flights and seasonal hotel prices. The Canary Islands stay warm in winter, which makes them good value outside the European summer, while the Balearic Islands are at their most expensive in July and August.

How your route changes the cost

Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona is the classic route, well served by fast trains. Adding the Balearic Islands, the Basque coast or Ibiza raises hotel costs in summer. Valencia, Málaga and smaller Andalusian towns such as Ronda and Córdoba are often better value than Barcelona.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package can make the budget predictable. Our Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona trip covers the classic route in eight nights, and Lisbon to Madrid combines Portugal and Spain. When comparing, list what each option includes: hotels, breakfasts, transfers, trains, tickets, guides and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Travel in late autumn or winter, outside holidays.
  2. Book flights, trains and Alhambra tickets early.
  3. Spend more nights in Madrid, Seville or Granada than Barcelona.
  4. Eat the menú del día at lunch.
  5. Use free museum hours where they apply.
  6. Walk old towns instead of taking taxis.
  7. Claim VAT refunds on eligible shopping.
  8. Pay with a low-fee forex card.

For families and parents

Children often get reduced entry at monuments, so carry passports. Parents may find late dining and summer heat tiring, so plan rest in the afternoon, as Spaniards do. Choose hotels with lifts and taxis between stations and hotels.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend more on a parador night, a rooftop in Seville or a beach stay, and save on tapas and trains. Spain pairs well with Portugal for a longer honeymoon.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each city, hotel location and category, breakfasts, transfers, train class, timed tickets for the Alhambra and Sagrada Família, guided tours, taxes and insurance. A lower headline price often leaves out monument tickets, which you may not be able to buy locally if they sell out.

Visa, insurance and forex

Spain is in the Schengen area. Check requirements on the Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai website. Travel insurance is required for Schengen visas, and Spain uses the euro.

Your questions, answered

Is Spain cheaper than other Western European countries?

Often yes. Hotels, food and trains in Spain usually cost less than in France, Switzerland or the UK, though Barcelona and San Sebastián can be expensive in peak season.

What should I book first for Spain?

Book flights, then Alhambra tickets in Granada, which sell out weeks ahead, and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. High-speed train fares are lowest when booked early, so fix them next.

Is it easy to find vegetarian food in Spain?

It takes some care, as ham and seafood appear in many dishes. Tapas such as patatas bravas, tortilla, pimientos de Padrón and gazpacho are usually vegetarian, and Madrid and Barcelona have many Indian and vegetarian restaurants.

When is Spain cheapest to visit?

November to February, outside Christmas and New Year, usually brings lower hotel rates, with mild weather in Andalusia. Easter week and summer are the most expensive periods.
