Spain combines Barcelona's Gaudí, Madrid's museums, Andalusia's Moorish palaces and a long Mediterranean coast. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, the visa checklist, flights, food, budget levers and a sample route.

Spain is a superb choice for Indian travellers who want a lively, warm and varied European trip: Gaudí's Barcelona, Madrid's grand museums, the Moorish palaces of Seville and Granada, and Mediterranean beaches, all linked by excellent high-speed trains. Plan seven or eight nights for Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona, travel in spring or autumn to avoid the summer heat, and start the Schengen visa process at least two months before departure.

Spain's distances are larger than many expect, and its daily rhythm — late lunches, later dinners — surprises first-time visitors. This guide covers who Spain suits, the regions, when to go, the visa checklist, flights, getting around, food, budget levers and a sample route.

Who Spain suits

  • Couples: flamenco evenings in Seville, sunsets at the Alhambra, Barcelona's beaches.
  • Families: warm weather, beaches, parks and child-friendly late evenings.
  • Art and architecture lovers: the Prado, the Sagrada Família, the Mezquita, the Alhambra.
  • Groups of friends: tapas crawls, nightlife and football.
  • Second-time Europe travellers: a change from the Paris–Switzerland classic.

The regions, in brief

When to go

April to June and September to October are ideal: warm, sunny and comfortable for walking. July and August are very hot, often above 40°C in Seville and Córdoba, though Barcelona's beaches are lively. Winter is mild in Andalusia and good for city breaks, with lower prices. Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Seville and the Feria de Abril are spectacular but very busy. Barcelona's La Mercè festival is in late September.

Schengen visa checklist

Spain is part of the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. If Spain is your main destination, you apply to Spain; the Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai lists the current requirements and the authorised application channel. Typical preparation includes:

  • a passport issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area;
  • a completed application form, photographs and biometrics;
  • flight and hotel reservations and an itinerary;
  • Schengen-compliant travel insurance;
  • bank statements, income tax returns and employment or business documents.

Flights from India

Madrid and Barcelona are the main gateways, with one-stop connections from Indian metros via the Gulf, Istanbul and European hubs; check for any new direct routes when booking. Flying into Madrid and out of Barcelona (or the reverse) avoids backtracking. If you combine Spain with Portugal, Lisbon is a good entry or exit point.

Getting around

Spain's AVE high-speed trains are among the best in Europe: Madrid to Seville takes about two and a half hours, Madrid to Barcelona about two and a half to three hours, and Madrid to Córdoba under two hours. Book early for good fares. Within cities, metros are efficient, and the old quarters are best explored on foot. Granada's Albaicín is steep and cobbled; taxis or the small city buses help.

Food for Indian travellers

Spanish meals start late: lunch around 2 pm and dinner from 9 pm. Vegetarians can enjoy patatas bravas, pimientos de Padrón, tortilla española, gazpacho and salmorejo (ask about ham garnish), vegetable paella, churros with chocolate and fresh fruit from the markets. Ham and fish stocks appear in unexpected dishes, so ask. Barcelona and Madrid have many vegetarian restaurants and Indian restaurants, and supermarkets make picnics easy.

Budget levers

  • Travel in spring or autumn shoulder weeks.
  • Book AVE trains and timed entries for the Alhambra and Sagrada Família early.
  • Eat the "menú del día", a set lunch offered by many restaurants on weekdays.
  • Stay in central neighbourhoods to save on transport.
  • Choose two Andalusian cities rather than three.

This is the shape of our Spain from Madrid to Barcelona trip. For an Iberian twist, Lisbon to Madrid overland takes in Portugal, Porto and Salamanca. For neighbouring countries, see our France and Italy guides.

Making the most of Barcelona

Barcelona is a city to walk. Book the Sagrada Família well in advance; Gaudí's basilica is extraordinary inside, with light pouring through stained glass. Park Güell also needs a timed ticket for its monumental zone. Walk the Gothic Quarter and El Born, browse the Boqueria market, and stroll the Passeig de Gràcia to see Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). End the day at Barceloneta beach or watch the city from Montjuïc or the Bunkers del Carmel at sunset.

Football fans can tour the club stadium or catch a match in season. For families, the aquarium, the CosmoCaixa science museum and the Tibidabo amusement park are all popular. Montserrat, a mountain monastery about an hour away, makes a beautiful day trip with a rack railway or cable car to the top.

Spain with parents and children

Spain's late meal times can be a challenge with young children or older parents. Most cafés serve food through the afternoon, and hotel restaurants often open earlier for dinner. Plan sightseeing for the mornings, rest during the hottest hours and go out again in the evening, when Spanish families fill the squares. Seville, Madrid and Barcelona have flat central areas that are easy to walk, while Granada's hilly Albaicín and the Alhambra's long walkways need more time and comfortable shoes.

Practical tips

  • Watch for pickpockets on Las Ramblas, in metros and at crowded sights.
  • Many shops close in the mid-afternoon in smaller towns.
  • Dress modestly for cathedrals and the Mezquita.
  • Carry water and a hat in summer, and plan indoor visits for the afternoon heat.

With one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, your visa paperwork, Alhambra slots and trains are arranged, so you can settle into Spain's late, unhurried rhythm.

Your questions, answered

How many days are enough for Spain?

Seven or eight nights covers Madrid, two Andalusian cities and Barcelona. Five nights works for Madrid and Barcelona alone. Add Portugal for a 10 to 12 night Iberian trip.

Do Indians need a visa for Spain?

Yes. Spain is part of the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Check the official Spanish consulate pages for India and apply through the authorised appointment channel.

Is Spain good for vegetarians?

Yes, with planning. Tapas such as patatas bravas, pimientos de Padrón, tortilla española and gazpacho are vegetarian, and Barcelona and Madrid have many vegetarian restaurants. Ask about ham and fish stock, which appear in unexpected dishes.

When is the best time to visit Spain?

April to June and September to October are best. July and August are very hot, especially in Andalusia. Winter is mild in the south and good for city breaks.
