Spain is best in spring and autumn, when Andalusia is warm rather than scorching and Barcelona's beaches are pleasant. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Spain from India is in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when the weather is warm and comfortable across Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona. July and August are very hot inland, especially in Seville and Córdoba, while winter is mild in the south and good for value city breaks. Festivals such as Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril bring colour and crowds in spring.

Spain's climate varies from the cooler north to the hot interior and the mild Mediterranean coast. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (March to May): warm days, orange blossom in Andalusia, major festivals.
  • Summer (June to August): hot to very hot inland, beach season on the coasts, long evenings.
  • Autumn (September to November): warm early, harvest season, fewer crowds.
  • Winter (December to February): mild in the south, cold in Madrid and the north, quiet and good value.

Andalusia by season

Seville, Córdoba and Granada are at their best in spring and autumn. In April and May, orange blossom fills the air, patios bloom and the weather is warm but comfortable. From late June to August, temperatures often climb above 40°C, making midday sightseeing exhausting; locals rest in the afternoon and come out in the evening. October and November are pleasant again, and winter is mild and sunny, with cold nights in Granada near the Sierra Nevada.

Barcelona and the coast

Barcelona is comfortable from April to October, with beach weather from June to September. July and August bring crowds and humidity, while May, June and September offer warm sea and a calmer city. Winters are mild, making Barcelona a good year-round city break, though beach days are over.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer school holidays in May and June fall in a good window for Spain, though June is hot in Andalusia; consider Barcelona and the north for late June. Diwali, in October or November, brings pleasant weather in the south. Christmas and New Year offer festive cities and mild weather in Andalusia. Book visas and flights early for May and June.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, April, May, October and November are best: comfortable temperatures make walking in old towns easier. Avoid Andalusia in July and August with young children or elderly parents. Spain's late meal times can be tiring for children; many cafés serve food throughout the afternoon.

How far ahead to book

For spring and early summer, book Alhambra tickets, Sagrada Família entries and hotels two to four months ahead; Semana Santa in Seville needs even earlier booking. Start your Schengen visa preparation at least two months before travel. For winter, shorter lead times are usually fine.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Visiting Seville or Córdoba in August: extreme heat makes sightseeing difficult.
  • Arriving in Granada without Alhambra tickets: timed slots sell out weeks ahead.
  • Booking Semana Santa late: Seville's hotels fill months in advance.
  • Expecting early dinners: many restaurants open for dinner only after 8.30 pm.

Madrid and central Spain

Madrid has hot summers and cold winters, typical of Spain's high central plateau. Spring and autumn are ideal for its museums, parks and day trips to Toledo and Segovia. In July and August, the city can be very hot and some locals leave on holiday, while winter brings crisp, sunny days and occasional frost. Christmas in Madrid is lively, with lights, markets around Plaza Mayor and the New Year's Eve countdown at Puerta del Sol.

In short

Choose April, May, September or October for the best all-round trip, June or September for beaches with fewer crowds, spring for festivals and winter for mild, good-value Andalusia.

If your dates are fixed in July or August, base yourself in Barcelona, San Sebastián or the Basque coast, where the weather is more comfortable, and save Andalusia for spring or autumn. If you travel in winter, focus on Seville, Málaga and Granada, where sunny days are common.

Matching the route to the season

From March to June and September to November, our Spain from Madrid to Barcelona trip covers the classic route comfortably. For an Iberian combination, Lisbon to Madrid overland is at its best in spring and autumn.

Whatever the month, follow the Spanish rhythm: sightsee in the morning, rest after lunch and enjoy the evenings, when squares and terraces come alive.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: light layers, a light jacket and walking shoes.
  • Summer: breathable clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle.
  • Winter: a warm jacket for Madrid and Granada evenings.
