France is lovely from spring to early autumn, with lavender in July, harvests in September and Christmas markets in December. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, prices and events, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit France from India is from April to June and in September and October, when the weather is pleasant, days are long and crowds are lighter than in mid-summer. May, June and September are ideal for Paris, the Loire and Normandy; late June to July brings lavender to Provence; and December is magical for Christmas markets. July and August are hot and busy, especially on the Riviera.

France's climate ranges from the mild north to the Mediterranean south and the Alpine east. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, prices and events, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holiday dates fit in.

The seasons

  • Spring (March to May): blossoms in Paris, mild days, gardens and châteaux at their freshest.
  • Summer (June to August): warm to hot, long evenings, lavender in Provence, peak season on the Riviera.
  • Autumn (September to November): grape harvests, golden light, fewer crowds, cooler by November.
  • Winter (December to February): cold, short days, Christmas markets, skiing in the Alps.

Paris by season

Paris is a year-round city. In spring, the parks and gardens bloom and outdoor café terraces fill up. Summer brings long evenings along the Seine, open-air cinema and Paris Plages, though it is the busiest season for visitors. Autumn is golden and quieter, ideal for museums and walks in the Marais and Montmartre. Winter is cold and dark early, but the festive lights, department store windows and quieter museums are a reward.

Provence and the Riviera

Provence is most famous in late June and July, when lavender fields bloom around Valensole and the Luberon. The Riviera's beaches in Nice, Cannes and Antibes are busiest in July and August, while May, June and September offer warm sea and fewer crowds. Winter on the Riviera is mild, with festivals such as the Nice Carnival and Menton's Lemon Festival in February.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer holidays in May and June fall in an excellent window for Paris and Switzerland, though early booking is essential. Diwali, in October or November, brings cool weather and autumn colour. Christmas and New Year are festive but cold, with peak hotel prices in Paris. Many Indian travellers combine France with Switzerland in May and June, so book visas, flights and hotels early.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, May, June and September are best: comfortable temperatures make museum days and walks easier. Paris's metro has many stairs, so use taxis for older travellers. Avoid the hottest weeks of July and August with young children. In winter, plan indoor attractions and shorter days.

How far ahead to book

For May to September, book Paris hotels and Eiffel Tower summit tickets three to six months ahead. Lavender-season stays in Provence and Riviera hotels in July and August should also be booked early. For winter, two to three months is usually enough, except for Christmas week.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Arriving in Provence in August for lavender: most fields are harvested by then.
  • Forgetting museum closing days: many Paris museums close on Monday or Tuesday.
  • Booking the Riviera late for July and August: prices peak and availability falls.
  • Underestimating winter darkness: December days end before 5 pm in Paris.

Other regions by season

The Loire Valley's châteaux and gardens are at their best from April to October, with some smaller châteaux closing or reducing hours in winter. Normandy and Mont-Saint-Michel are pleasant from May to September; the abbey is open year-round, but tides and weather make summer visits easier. Alsace is famous for its December Christmas markets in Strasbourg and Colmar, and lovely in September and October for the wine harvest. The French Alps offer skiing from December to April and hiking around Chamonix and Annecy from June to September.

In short

Choose May, June or September for Paris and the classic regions, late June to mid-July for lavender, December for Christmas markets and the Alps in winter for snow.

If your dates are fixed by school or work holidays, choose the region that suits the month: Paris and the Loire in spring, Provence in early summer, Alsace in December.

Matching the route to the season

From May to September, our Switzerland and Paris and Paris, Amsterdam and Switzerland trips make the most of long days and open Alpine excursions. In April and May, Amsterdam's tulip season adds colour to the multi-country route.

What to pack by season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, a light jacket, an umbrella and comfortable shoes.
  • Summer: light clothing, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Winter: a warm coat, scarf, gloves and waterproof shoes.
