A Spain honeymoon works best with two or three bases, such as Barcelona, Seville and Granada, linked by fast trains, with late, unhurried evenings. Here is how to choose the month, the bases, the moments worth booking and the budget levers from India.

A Spain honeymoon works best with two or three bases linked by fast trains, such as Barcelona, Seville and Granada, and evenings that start late and end slowly. Pair one big city with the romance of Andalusia, or add an island for beach time, and book only a few special moments in advance.

Spain suits couples who love architecture, warm evenings, music and food. Barcelona has Gaudí and the sea, Andalusia has Moorish palaces and flamenco, and the islands add beaches. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.

The short answer: fewer bases, more time

For a first honeymoon, two or three bases over eight to ten nights is the right shape. A typical plan pairs Barcelona with Seville and Granada, or Madrid with Andalusia. Spain's fast AVE trains make these connections comfortable.

Couples who want beach time can add Mallorca or the Costa del Sol for three or four nights.

Our Madrid, Andalusia and Barcelona trip follows a similar shape, and the 7-day Spain itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.

Which month suits your wedding date?

Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Spain.

  • April to June: warm days, orange blossom in Seville and spring festivals. A favourite honeymoon season.
  • July and August: very hot inland, especially in Seville and Córdoba, though good for beaches and islands. Busy and expensive on the coast.
  • September and October: warm sea, pleasant cities and thinner crowds. One of the best times to go.
  • November to March: mild in the south, cooler in the north, and quiet. Good for cities and the Alhambra.

Our best time to visit Spain guide covers each month in more detail.

Romantic bases and what each offers

Barcelona combines Gaudí's architecture, the Gothic Quarter, beaches and a lively food scene. Three or four nights is ideal.

Seville is the romantic heart of Andalusia, with the Alcázar, the cathedral, Plaza de España and flamenco in the evenings.

Granada is home to the Alhambra, with sunset views from the Mirador de San Nicolás in the Albaicín quarter.

Madrid has world-class museums, grand boulevards, Retiro Park and lively evenings.

Mallorca and the Balearics offer beaches, coves, mountain villages and boat days in summer.

The Costa del Sol and white villages include Málaga, Marbella and hill villages such as Ronda and Frigiliana.

Honeymoon routes that work

Eight nights, classic: four nights in Barcelona, then a flight or train to Seville for two nights and Granada for two.

Nine nights, Madrid and Andalusia: two nights in Madrid, three in Seville, two in Granada and two in Ronda or Málaga.

Ten nights, city and island: four nights in Barcelona and three in Seville, then three in Mallorca for beach time.

Getting around

Spain's AVE high-speed trains link Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga and Granada, and booking ahead secures better fares. Barcelona to Andalusia is often quicker by air. In Andalusia, a private driver or rented car lets you explore white villages and Ronda at your own pace.

Spanish evenings

Spain runs late. Lunch is around two o'clock, dinner from nine, and squares stay lively until midnight in summer. An afternoon rest, the famous siesta, makes the evenings far more enjoyable, especially in the heat of Andalusia.

Choosing the right stay

For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the hotel's star rating. In Barcelona, a hotel near the Gothic Quarter or Eixample lets you walk to dinner; in Seville and Granada, a boutique hotel in a restored house with a patio or rooftop is special; and on the islands, a sea-view room makes the trip.

Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.

Moments worth booking in advance

  • The Alhambra: book tickets well in advance, as entry to the Nasrid Palaces is timed and sells out.
  • A flamenco evening: in Seville or Granada, in an intimate venue rather than a large show.
  • Sagrada Família: book a timed ticket and go in the late afternoon, when light streams through the stained glass.
  • A sunset dinner: on a rooftop in Seville or Barcelona. Book ahead and mention vegetarian needs.
  • A private photo session: in Seville's Plaza de España or Barcelona's Park Güell. Book a few weeks in advance.

Vegetarian and Jain dinners

Vegetarian couples can eat well in Spain with some care. Tapas such as patatas bravas, pimientos de padrón, tortilla, grilled vegetables and gazpacho, along with vegetable paella, are widely available. Ham and fish stock appear in unexpected places, so ask. Barcelona and Madrid have Indian and vegetarian restaurants, and Jain meals need advance planning. Our Spain vegetarian food guide has the details.

Where the honeymoon budget goes

The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:

  • Travel in spring or autumn rather than July and August.
  • Spend more on one special stay, such as a patio hotel in Seville, and keep others simple.
  • Book AVE trains and Alhambra tickets early.
  • Eat a menú del día at lunch, a fixed-price meal that is good value.
  • Choose three bases rather than five.

Our Spain trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.

Keeping the pace gentle

A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Plan one major monument per day, leave afternoons free in the heat, and keep evenings for walks, tapas and music. The flight from India is long, so keep the first day light.

Honeymoon mistakes to avoid

  • Too many cities, leaving more time on trains than in places.
  • Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
  • Leaving visa applications too late in wedding season.
  • Visiting Andalusia in July and August without planning around the heat.

The paperwork couples forget

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Spain. Apply well before the wedding, as appointment slots fill up in peak months. If one partner has recently changed their name after marriage, make sure the passport, tickets and visa all match. Carry your marriage certificate, travel insurance and hotel confirmations. Our Spain trip guide from India covers the Schengen checklist; always confirm the current requirements with the official visa service before applying.

April to June and September to October bring warm, pleasant weather. July and August are very hot in Andalusia and Madrid. Winter is mild in the south and good for cities.

How many nights do we need?

Eight to ten nights is comfortable for Barcelona plus two Andalusian cities, or for adding an island such as Mallorca.

Can we combine Spain with Portugal?

Yes. Lisbon and Seville or Madrid combine well over nine to eleven nights, with a short flight or a scenic drive between them.

Is Spain good for vegetarian couples?

Yes, with some care. Tapas such as patatas bravas, pimientos de padrón, tortilla and vegetable paella help, and cities have Indian and vegetarian restaurants. Ask about ham and fish stock.
