A Nagaland trip costs most in three places: flights to Dimapur or Guwahati, a private car with a local driver for the hills, and stays in Kohima, which rise sharply during the Hornbill Festival in early December. Homestays, local food and the Inner Line Permit are modest costs.

Nagaland is not a mass-tourism destination, so costs depend heavily on timing and transport. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Flights to Dimapur are limited and can be expensive, especially in December. Guwahati has more flights but adds a long drive or a train to Dimapur. Overnight trains from Kolkata and Guwahati keep costs down. See our guide to reaching Nagaland.

Hotels and homestays

Kohima has a small number of hotels, and prices rise sharply during Hornbill. Homestays in Khonoma, Kigwema and other villages offer good value and local meals. Dimapur has more hotels but is about three hours from Kohima.

Car and driver

A local driver who knows the hill roads is essential and a major share of the budget. Shared taxis between Dimapur and Kohima are cheaper for flexible travellers. Adding Kaziranga or Majuli in Assam adds driving days.

The Inner Line Permit

Indian visitors from outside the state apply for the Inner Line Permit on the official Nagaland ILP portal. Check current charges and processing times there.

The Hornbill Festival

The festival at the Kisama Heritage Village in early December brings dances, crafts and food stalls. Entry is usually modest, but accommodation and transport costs rise sharply. Our Hornbill Festival trip arranges stays and transfers ahead of the rush.

Food

Local Naga meals are inexpensive. Vegetarians should plan ahead, as meat is central to the cuisine; Kohima and Dimapur have North Indian restaurants. Jain travellers should carry some food.

Crafts and shopping

Naga shawls, woven bags, bamboo crafts and jewellery are popular buys, especially at Hornbill stalls and in Kohima's markets. Buying from cooperatives and artisans supports local communities.

Adding Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park in Assam, about four to five hours from Kohima, adds jeep safaris and lodges. Safari permits and lodges cost extra, and the park closes in the monsoon.

How your route changes the cost

Kohima with Khonoma and Kisama is the simplest. Adding Mon in the north means long drives and more days. Combining with Assam or Meghalaya via Guwahati adds flights and hotels.

How many days to budget for

Four to five nights covers Kohima, Khonoma and Kisama. Seven nights adds Kaziranga. Allow buffer time for road conditions.

Timing your trip

October to April is the dry season. Outside Hornbill, Kohima is quiet and affordable. The monsoon brings landslides and road closures.

Village stays and Khonoma

A night or two in Khonoma, known for its community conservation and terraced fields, is one of the best-value experiences in Nagaland. Homestays are simple, with home-cooked meals, and local guides charge modest fees for village walks. It is a calmer alternative to Kohima during the festival.

Dzükou Valley

The Dzükou Valley trek, from Viswema or Zakhama near Kohima, needs a guide and a fit group. Costs are low — guide fees, simple rest-house beds and food — but allow a full day or an overnight. The valley is at its best in summer for flowers and in autumn for clear skies.

Mon and the Konyak villages

Mon, in the north, is home to the Konyak Nagas and is usually reached from Jorhat in Assam. The journey is long and roads are rough, so it adds two or three days, a driver and a local guide. Stays are simple and inexpensive, but transport costs rise.

Cheaper ways to get around

Shared taxis and state buses run between Dimapur and Kohima and to some district towns at low cost. Overnight trains to Dimapur save a hotel night. These suit flexible travellers; families usually prefer a private car.

Cash and connectivity

ATMs can run dry during Hornbill, so carry cash. Mobile coverage is patchy in villages. Many shops close on Sundays.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Hornbill Festival trip secures stays months ahead. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Visit outside Hornbill if you do not need the festival.
  2. Take trains to Dimapur.
  3. Stay in village homestays.
  4. Use shared taxis for the Dimapur–Kohima leg.
  5. Book Hornbill stays months ahead.
  6. Eat local meals.
  7. Combine with Assam efficiently.
  8. Carry enough cash.

For families and parents

Families should choose hotels with heating in winter and avoid long drives after dark. Children enjoy the festival dances and village visits.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a comfortable Kohima hotel and add a homestay night in Khonoma.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, festival-day transfers, Kaziranga safaris, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means a stay far from Kohima during Hornbill.
