Madhya Pradesh in 7 Days: A Practical Itinerary
- Madhya Pradesh itinerary
- Kanha
- Bandhavgarh
- Satpura
- 7 days
Seven days in Madhya Pradesh covers two tiger reserves, Kanha and Bandhavgarh, from Jabalpur, or Satpura with Bhopal and Sanchi. Here is a day-by-day safari route with realistic drive times, what to cut and variations.
Seven days in Madhya Pradesh is ideal for two tiger reserves: three nights at Kanha and three at Bandhavgarh, flying into and out of Jabalpur. That gives you eight to ten jeep safaris across two very different forests, with time for naturalist walks and rest in between. Alternatively, a week at Satpura with Bhopal and Sanchi offers walking safaris, canoeing and heritage instead of a second big-cat park.
Madhya Pradesh's parks are far apart, so the key is choosing two that share a gateway. This itinerary covers the Kanha–Bandhavgarh route from Jabalpur, a Satpura alternative, what to cut and variations for families, couples and travellers with parents.
The route at a glance
| Day | Base | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kanha | Fly to Jabalpur, drive to Kanha (about 4 hours), evening nature walk |
| 2 | Kanha | Morning and afternoon jeep safaris |
| 3 | Kanha | Morning safari, village or naturalist walk, Kanha museum |
| 4 | Bandhavgarh | Drive to Bandhavgarh (5–6 hours), rest |
| 5 | Bandhavgarh | Morning and afternoon safaris |
| 6 | Bandhavgarh | Morning safari, rest, optional birding walk |
| 7 | Departure | Early safari or rest, drive to Jabalpur (4–5 hours), fly home |
Days 1–3: Kanha
Fly into Jabalpur and drive about four hours to Kanha, arriving in time for an evening nature walk in the buffer zone. Over the next two days, take morning and afternoon jeep safaris in zones such as Kanha, Kisli, Mukki or Sarhi. Kanha's sal forests and open meadows are home to tigers, leopards, gaur, wild dogs and the barasingha, the hard-ground swamp deer saved from near extinction here. Spend one afternoon at the park's interpretation centre or on a naturalist-led village walk.
Days 4–6: Bandhavgarh
Drive to Bandhavgarh (five to six hours) through rural Madhya Pradesh and rest on arrival. Bandhavgarh is known for its high tiger density, rocky hills and the ancient fort above the forest. Take two safaris on day five and a morning safari on day six, choosing between the Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli zones. Afternoons are for rest, birding walks or simply watching the forest from your lodge.
Variation: Satpura, Bhopal and Sanchi
For a quieter, more varied week, fly to Bhopal and spend a day at the Great Stupa of Sanchi and the prehistoric rock shelters of Bhimbetka. Then drive about three hours to Satpura for four nights of jeep safaris, guided walking safaris, canoeing on the Denwa backwaters and night drives in the buffer zone. Satpura is known for sloth bears, leopards and rich birdlife. Our Satpura Wildscape trip follows this approach.
Where to stay
| Park | Stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kanha | Lodge near your safari gate (Mukki or Kisli) | Short transfers for dawn safaris |
| Bandhavgarh | Lodge near Tala | Access to the most popular zone |
| Satpura | Riverside lodge near Madhai | Boat and walking safaris |
Getting there and around
Jabalpur has flights and trains from major Indian cities and is the gateway for Kanha and Bandhavgarh. Bhopal is the gateway for Satpura and Sanchi. A private car with an experienced driver is the best way to travel between parks; roads are good but journeys are long.
Food along the route
Safari lodges include meals, usually North Indian and continental, and adapt dishes for vegetarian and Jain guests with notice. Bhopal is known for its Mughlai food and poha-jalebi breakfasts. Carry snacks and water for safaris.
Why this order works
Starting with Kanha gives you the largest park first, with its open meadows and naturalist activities. Bandhavgarh follows with high sighting chances, so the trip ends on a high. Both are reached from Jabalpur, so you fly in and out of the same airport.
Whatever the order, keep afternoons slow. Safaris start before dawn, and rest between drives keeps everyone alert for the next one.
What a safari day looks like
A typical day starts with a wake-up call before dawn, tea and biscuits, and a jeep ride to the gate. Morning safaris last about four hours, returning for a late breakfast. Afternoons are for rest, a swim or a nature walk, before an afternoon safari until sunset. Evenings bring dinner, stories from the naturalists and an early night.
Keep at least one afternoon free for simply sitting on your lodge veranda; the forest edge is often full of birds and the occasional deer.
What to cut if you are short on time
- Four or five days: choose one park and stay three or four nights.
- Do not add: Pench, Panna and Satpura to the same week.
Variations for families and parents
For families with older parents, limit safaris to one a day, choose lodges close to the gate and bring cushions for bumpy tracks. Children over six usually enjoy safaris most; check minimum age rules for some activities. Pack blankets for cold winter mornings.
For couples
Couples can choose a luxury jungle lodge with private verandas, bush dinners and naturalist-led walks, and add Khajuraho via Panna for a heritage finish.
Timing this route
October to June, with the best sightings from March to May. See our month-by-month Madhya Pradesh guide.
Budget levers
- Share a safari vehicle with other travellers instead of booking a private jeep.
- Travel in October, November or February, outside the summer and holiday peaks.
- Choose a mid-range lodge near the gate rather than a luxury property far away.
- Combine two parks that share the Jabalpur gateway to save on flights.
With an extra day
Add Pench, about three hours from Jabalpur or Nagpur, for teak forests and the setting associated with The Jungle Book, or visit Jabalpur's Bhedaghat to see the Narmada flowing through white marble rocks, ideally by boat on a moonlit evening.
Packing for this route
- Neutral-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Warm layers, gloves and a cap for winter safaris.
- Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
- Sunscreen, a dust scarf and a refillable water bottle.
- The ID used for your permit booking.
