Seven days in Kenya covers Nairobi, Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro views, and three nights in the Masai Mara. Here is a day-by-day safari route with realistic transfers, what to cut and variations for families and couples.

Seven days in Kenya is enough for a rewarding first safari: one night in Nairobi, two in Amboseli for its elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views, and three in the Masai Mara for big cats and, in season, the Great Migration, with a final night or flight home via Nairobi. Keep the route to two parks, give the Mara at least three nights, and consider flying between parks to save hours on the road.

The most common mistake on a short safari is visiting too many parks. Each transfer between parks takes most of a day by road, which means fewer game drives. This itinerary focuses on quality time in two parks, explains what to cut and offers variations for families, couples and travellers with parents.

Day 1: Nairobi

Most flights from India arrive in Nairobi in the morning or afternoon. Rest after the journey, then, if you have time, visit the Giraffe Centre, where you can see endangered Rothschild's giraffes up close, or the elephant orphanage run by a conservation trust (check visiting hours, as they are limited). Stay near the airport or in a leafy suburb such as Karen for an easy start the next day.

Days 2–3: Amboseli

Amboseli National Park is famous for large elephant herds set against Mount Kilimanjaro, which rises across the border in Tanzania. The drive from Nairobi takes roughly four to five hours; a light-aircraft flight takes under an hour. Afternoon and dawn game drives offer the best light and wildlife activity, and clear mornings give the classic Kilimanjaro view. Observation Hill provides a panoramic view of the swamps where elephants, hippos and birds gather.

Days 4–6: The Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is the highlight of most Kenya safaris. Fly from Amboseli to a Mara airstrip, or drive via Nairobi (a long day). Over three nights, combine dawn and afternoon drives with one full-day drive with a packed lunch, heading towards the Mara River during the migration season from about July to October. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and vast plains game are found year-round. Optional extras include a hot-air balloon flight at sunrise and a visit to a Maasai village (ask your camp to arrange a community-run visit).

Day 7: Return

Enjoy a final early game drive, then fly back to Nairobi (about 45 minutes) to connect with your international flight. If your flight leaves late, a day room near the airport makes the wait comfortable.

Variation: adding Lake Naivasha

With nine nights, add Lake Naivasha between Amboseli and the Mara for boat rides among hippos, a walking safari on Crescent Island and cycling through Hell's Gate gorge. This also breaks the long road journey. Our Kenya safari circuit follows exactly this route.

Why this order works

Starting with Amboseli and ending in the Mara saves the most dramatic wildlife for last and puts the longest stay where the game viewing is richest. Flying into the Mara and back to Nairobi also means your final day is spent on a short flight rather than a long road journey before an international departure.

What to cut if you are short on time

  • Five days: skip Amboseli and spend four nights in the Masai Mara.
  • Six days: reduce Amboseli to one night if you fly.
  • Do not add: Samburu or Lake Nakuru to a seven-day trip unless you drop a park.

Variations for families and parents

Families with children should choose lodges with family rooms and pools, fly between parks and plan shorter drives for younger children. Older parents may find long drives on rough roads tiring, so flights, a lodge rather than a tented camp and a rest each afternoon make the trip more comfortable. Check any minimum age rules for balloon flights and walking safaris.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples can choose an intimate tented camp in a private conservancy bordering the Mara, where vehicle numbers are limited and bush dinners and sundowners are often included. A balloon flight at sunrise followed by a champagne breakfast is a classic honeymoon moment.

Timing this route

The route works year-round. July to October is the migration season in the Mara, the busiest and most expensive period. January and February are dry and excellent for game viewing at lower prices. April and May bring the long rains, when some camps close. See our month-by-month Kenya guide for details.

Getting there and around

Direct flights link Mumbai with Nairobi in roughly six hours, and other Indian cities connect via Mumbai or Gulf hubs. Light aircraft to Amboseli and the Mara usually depart from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, a separate airport from the international one, so allow time for the transfer. On the road, safari vehicles have pop-up roofs for game viewing; ask for a window seat for each traveller.

Food along the route

Nairobi has many Indian restaurants thanks to its long-established Indian community. On safari, lodges serve buffets or set menus and will prepare vegetarian meals with notice; Jain meals need specific, early requests. Carry familiar snacks for long drives, and drink bottled or filtered water.

Practical tips

  • Apply for your Kenya eTA only on the official Kenya eTA website.
  • Speak to a travel medicine clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention six to eight weeks before travel.
  • Pack neutral clothing, warm layers for early drives, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • Tell lodges about vegetarian or Jain requirements well in advance.

Your questions, answered

Is 7 days enough for a Kenya safari?

Seven days is enough for two parks: Amboseli and the Masai Mara. Spend at least three nights in the Mara for the best wildlife experience. Add Lake Naivasha with an extra one or two nights.

Should I drive or fly between parks in Kenya?

Driving is cheaper and shows you the countryside but takes five to six hours between parks on bumpy roads. Light-aircraft flights take about an hour and save energy, but have strict soft-bag luggage limits.

How many game drives will I get in 7 days?

With two nights in Amboseli and three in the Mara, you can expect around eight to ten game drives, including dawn and afternoon drives and at least one full day with a packed lunch.

Is a 7-day Kenya safari suitable for children?

Yes, for children who can manage long drives. Choose lodges with family rooms and pools, and consider flying between parks to cut travel time.
