Kenya offers one of the world's great safaris within a short flight of India. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, the eTA checklist, flights, food, budget levers and a sample safari route.

Kenya is one of the best safari destinations in the world for Indian travellers: it is a short flight from Mumbai, Indian food is widely available, and the Masai Mara offers some of the finest wildlife viewing anywhere. Plan seven to nine nights to combine the Masai Mara with Amboseli and Lake Naivasha, travel between July and October to have the best chance of seeing the Great Migration, and apply for the Kenya eTA before you fly.

A safari is unlike any other trip. Days start before dawn, the best moments come on long game drives, and the choice of lodge and season matters more than the number of places you visit. This guide covers who a Kenya safari suits, when to go, entry requirements, flights from India, food, budget levers and a sample route.

Who a Kenya safari suits

Kenya suitsThink twice if
Wildlife lovers and photographersYou want beaches and nightlife as the main event
Families with children old enough for long drivesYou have toddlers who struggle with long days in a vehicle
Honeymooners wanting something differentYou dislike early mornings
Travellers with parents who are comfortable with bumpy roadsAnyone in your group has serious back problems

The parks worth knowing

  • Masai Mara National Reserve: big cats, vast herds and, in season, river crossings during the migration. The essential stop.
  • Amboseli National Park: large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro (across the border in Tanzania) as a backdrop on clear mornings.
  • Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate: boat rides among hippos, walking safaris on Crescent Island and cycling through Hell's Gate gorge.
  • Lake Nakuru: rhinos, flamingos in some seasons, and tree-climbing lions on lucky days.
  • Samburu: a drier northern landscape with species not found further south.

When to go

MonthsWhat to expect
July–OctoberDry season and Great Migration in the Mara (timing varies each year). Peak demand.
November–DecemberShort rains; green landscapes, fewer visitors.
January–MarchMostly dry, warm and excellent for game viewing.
April–MayLong rains; some camps close, lowest prices.

The migration follows the rains, not the calendar. River crossings are never guaranteed, but resident wildlife in the Mara is excellent all year.

Entry checklist for Indian passport holders

Kenya requires visitors, including Indian passport holders, to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travel. Apply only on the official Kenya eTA website, where the current requirements, processing times and conditions are listed. Prepare:

  • a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages;
  • flight bookings and accommodation or safari confirmations;
  • a recent photograph and a scan of your passport;
  • proof of yellow fever vaccination if required for your route — check current health advice and carry the certificate, as India also checks it on return for travellers from some countries.

Flights from India

Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the gateway. Direct flights operate from Mumbai, and other Indian cities connect via Mumbai or Gulf hubs. Flying time from Mumbai is roughly six hours. Within Kenya, you can travel between parks by road in a safari vehicle or by light aircraft to airstrips in the Mara and Amboseli, which saves hours of driving but has strict soft-bag luggage limits.

Food for Indian travellers

Kenya has a long-established Indian community, so Nairobi has many Indian restaurants and vegetarian options. On safari, lodges and tented camps serve buffets or set menus and will prepare vegetarian meals if told in advance; Jain meals need specific, early requests. Carry familiar snacks for long drives, and drink bottled or filtered water.

Budget levers

  • Season: January to March offers excellent viewing at lower prices than the migration peak.
  • Road versus air: road transfers cost less; flying saves time and energy.
  • Lodge choice: lodges inside the reserve cost more but save time; camps on conservancies offer quieter game drives.
  • Group size: a private vehicle shared by four to six travellers is better value per person than a vehicle for two.
  • Park fees: conservation fees are charged per person per day and are a significant part of safari costs; check what your quote includes.

Lodges, camps and game drives

Safari accommodation ranges from large lodges with pools and buffets to intimate tented camps with en-suite bathrooms under canvas. Tented camps are not roughing it: most have proper beds, hot showers and private verandas, and the sounds of the bush at night are part of the experience. Families with young children and travellers with parents may prefer a lodge for its solid walls and facilities.

Inside the Masai Mara National Reserve, vehicles can be numerous at big-cat sightings. Private conservancies bordering the reserve limit vehicle numbers and often allow night drives and walking safaris. A typical day has an early morning drive, a rest in the heat of midday and an afternoon drive until sunset; full-day drives with a packed lunch are ideal in the migration season.

Safari etiquette

  • Stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise, and keep voices low near animals.
  • Never ask a driver to go off-road where it is not permitted or to crowd an animal.
  • Ask before photographing people, including in Maasai villages.
  • Tipping guides and camp staff is customary; ask your planner for current norms.

What to pack

  • Neutral-coloured clothing in layers; mornings are cold, afternoons warm.
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • A soft duffel bag if you will take light aircraft.
  • A dust cover or scarf for open roads.

A safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travellers, and it is one of the experiences most worth travelling for. With lodges, vehicles and park timings arranged by one named planner and WhatsApp support throughout, your only job is to look out of the window.

Your questions, answered

How many days are enough for a Kenya safari?

Six or seven nights covers the Masai Mara and one more park such as Amboseli. Nine nights allows Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara at a relaxed pace with time for game drives at dawn and dusk.

Do Indians need a visa for Kenya?

Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Kenya. Apply only on the official Kenya eTA website and check the current requirements there.

When is the best time for a Kenya safari?

July to October is the most famous period, when the Great Migration is usually in the Masai Mara. January to February is also excellent, with dry weather and good game viewing. April and May are the long rains.

Is Kenya good for vegetarian travellers from India?

Yes. Kenya has a large Indian-origin community, Nairobi has many Indian restaurants, and most safari lodges and camps prepare vegetarian meals if told in advance. Jain meals need specific advance requests.
