Kenya's safari seasons follow the rains, not the calendar. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, wildlife, the Great Migration, crowds and prices, plus the best months by travel style and Indian holidays.

The best time for a Kenya safari is during the dry seasons: July to October, when the Great Migration is usually in the Masai Mara, and January to February, when the weather is dry and game viewing is excellent at lower prices. The long rains in April and May bring the lowest prices and lush landscapes but some camp closures; the short rains in November and December are lighter and still good for safaris. Wildlife is present all year, so there is no bad time to go, only different experiences.

Kenya sits on the equator, so temperatures are fairly stable year-round; the seasons are defined by rainfall. This guide gives a month-by-month view, explains the migration, suggests the best months by travel style and shows how Indian holidays fit in.

Kenya's seasons

  • Long dry season (late June to October): sparse vegetation, animals gathering at water, the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. Peak season and peak prices.
  • Short rains (November to mid-December): afternoon showers, green landscapes, fewer visitors.
  • Short dry season (mid-December to March): warm and mostly dry, newborn animals, good value outside the holidays.
  • Long rains (April to May): heavy rain, muddy roads, some camps closed, lowest prices.

Understanding the Great Migration

The Great Migration is the year-round movement of over a million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, following the rains and fresh grass. The herds usually reach the Mara around July and stay until about October, crossing the Mara River in dramatic, unpredictable moments. Timing varies with rainfall each year, and crossings cannot be guaranteed even in peak months. Spending three or more nights in the Mara, ideally in a camp near the river, gives you the best chance.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Indian summer school holidays in May and June meet the end of the long rains and the start of the dry season; June is the better choice. Diwali in October or November can catch the end of the migration in October or the short rains in November, both of which work well. Christmas and New Year are excellent for weather and wildlife but busy and expensive. Mumbai's direct flights to Nairobi make shorter trips practical around long weekends.

Seasons by park

Amboseli is good year-round, with the clearest views of Kilimanjaro on dry mornings, especially from June to October and January to February. Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate are pleasant throughout the year, though walking and cycling are best in dry months. Samburu in the north is drier and less affected by rain. The Masai Mara is excellent all year for resident wildlife, with the migration adding drama from July to October.

Matching the route to the season

Our Kenya safari circuit covers Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara. In migration season, we can add an extra night in the Mara; in the green season, we choose camps that stay open and roads that stay passable.

The case for the green season

Many travellers overlook Kenya's green seasons, but they have real advantages. From November to early December and from late March to May, landscapes turn lush, dust settles and many animals give birth, so you may see young zebras, wildebeest and gazelles. Birdlife is at its richest, with migratory species arriving from Europe and Asia. Lodges offer lower rates, and you may share sightings with only a few vehicles. The trade-offs are afternoon rain, muddy tracks and some camp closures in April and May.

Safari with parents and children by season

For families, the dry seasons are easier: roads are firmer, drives shorter and mosquitoes fewer. June to August fits Indian school holidays and gives excellent viewing, though cold mornings call for warm layers. Older parents may find the bumpy drives tiring; a flight to the Mara instead of the long road journey and a lodge with solid rooms rather than a tented camp can make the trip more comfortable.

How far ahead to book

For the migration months of July to October and for Christmas and New Year, book lodges and camps six to nine months ahead; the best-positioned camps in the Masai Mara fill first. Light-aircraft seats between parks are also limited in peak season. For January to March and June, three to four months is usually enough. Apply for your Kenya eTA once flights and lodges are confirmed, and arrange travel health consultations about six to eight weeks before departure.

What to pack by season

  • Dry season: warm layers for cold early mornings, a hat, sunscreen and a dust scarf.
  • Rainy seasons: a light waterproof jacket and quick-dry clothing.
  • All year: neutral colours, binoculars, insect repellent and a soft bag for light aircraft.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month for a Kenya safari?

July to October is the most famous period, when the Great Migration is usually in the Masai Mara. January and February are also excellent, with dry weather and good game viewing at lower prices.

When is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara?

The herds usually arrive in the Masai Mara around July and stay until about October, but timing depends on rainfall and varies each year. River crossings are dramatic but never guaranteed.

Should you avoid the rainy season in Kenya?

The long rains, roughly April and May, bring heavy showers, muddy roads and some camp closures, but also lush landscapes and the lowest prices. The short rains in November and December are lighter and still good for safaris.

Is December a good time for a Kenya safari?

Yes. December has short rains early in the month, green landscapes and newborn animals. Christmas and New Year are busy, so book lodges well in advance.
