Madhya Pradesh's tiger reserves open from October to June, with the best sightings in the hot months and the most comfortable weather in winter. Here is a month-by-month guide, the best months by travel style and when to book.

The best time to visit Madhya Pradesh depends on your priorities: October to February for comfortable weather, lush forests and heritage sites such as Khajuraho and Orchha, and March to June for the best chance of tiger sightings, when forests thin out and animals gather near water. The core zones of the tiger reserves close during the monsoon, from about July to September, so plan safaris between October and June.

Madhya Pradesh sits at the heart of India, with hot summers, a strong monsoon and cool winters. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, safari seasons, crowds and festivals, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Post-monsoon (October to November): lush forests, reopening parks, pleasant days.
  • Winter (December to February): cool days, cold early mornings, comfortable heritage sightseeing.
  • Summer (March to June): hot and dry, excellent tiger sightings, very hot afternoons from April.
  • Monsoon (July to September): heavy rain, core zones closed, green landscapes, Mandu at its most beautiful.

Safari seasons in detail

From October to February, the forests of Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Satpura are green and lush after the monsoon. Weather is comfortable, and winter mornings are cold and misty, which can be beautiful for photography. Dense vegetation can make sightings harder, but birdlife is excellent. From March to June, leaves fall, grass dries and water sources shrink, so tigers and other animals are easier to find near waterholes. Afternoon safaris in May and June are very hot. Permits for popular zones sell out quickly in both seasons; book through the official MP Forest booking portal as early as possible.

Heritage sites by season

Khajuraho, Orchha, Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Gwalior and Ujjain are most comfortable to explore from October to March. The Khajuraho Dance Festival, usually in February, stages classical dance against the illuminated temples. Ujjain's Simhastha Kumbh Mela, held every twelve years, draws enormous crowds. Mandu, with its Afghan-era palaces and lakes, is at its most beautiful in the monsoon, when the landscape turns green and mist rolls across the ruins. Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, is pleasant from March to June.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, October to February is best: temperatures are comfortable, and heritage sites are easy to explore. Winter morning safaris are cold in open jeeps, so bring blankets, gloves and caps. Summer safaris offer better sightings but can be exhausting in the heat; limit them to mornings for young children and older travellers. Check minimum age rules for certain activities in advance.

How far ahead to book

Safari permits for popular zones such as Kanha's Mukki and Kisli and Bandhavgarh's Tala open months in advance and sell out quickly, especially for weekends, holidays and the summer peak. Book permits and lodges three to four months ahead, and earlier for Christmas, New Year and May. For heritage trips, two to three months is usually enough.

Matching the route to the season

From October to June, our Kanha: Beyond the Safari combines safaris with naturalist-led walks and village visits. Satpura Wildscape adds walking safaris and canoeing, best from October to April before the summer heat peaks.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Planning a safari in July or August: core zones are closed during the monsoon.
  • Booking permits late: popular zones sell out months ahead, especially in summer and holidays.
  • Doing only one safari: plan at least three or four drives to improve your chances.
  • Underestimating winter mornings: open jeeps at dawn in December and January are very cold.
  • Visiting Khajuraho at midday in summer: the temple complexes are exposed; go early or late.

A final tip: pair a park with a nearby heritage site to balance the early safari starts with relaxed sightseeing — Panna with Khajuraho, Satpura with Bhopal and Sanchi, or Kanha and Bandhavgarh with Jabalpur's Bhedaghat marble rocks.

In short

Choose March to June for the best tiger sightings, October to February for comfortable safaris and heritage sightseeing, and the monsoon for Mandu's green ruins and Pachmarhi's waterfalls. Book safari permits as early as possible, plan at least three drives per park, and pack for cold mornings in winter.

If your dates fall in the monsoon, visit Mandu, Bhopal and Sanchi, or the hill station of Pachmarhi, and plan the tiger reserves for another season.

What to pack by season

  • October to February: warm layers, a jacket, gloves and a cap for morning safaris.
  • March to June: light, neutral clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • July to September: rain gear if visiting Mandu or Pachmarhi.
  • All year: binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens and the ID used for safari bookings.
