Madhya Pradesh Trip Planning Guide: Routes, Seasons and Stays
- Madhya Pradesh
- Kanha
- Satpura
- Bandhavgarh
- Khajuraho
Madhya Pradesh is India's tiger state, with Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench and Satpura, plus Khajuraho, Orchha and Ujjain. Here is who it suits, how many nights, the best months, how to reach and a sample route.
Madhya Pradesh is the heart of India's tiger country, with Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Satpura offering some of the best wildlife experiences in Asia, alongside the temples of Khajuraho, the medieval town of Orchha and the sacred city of Ujjain. Plan five or six nights for two parks or one park and a heritage town, travel between October and June when the core zones are open, and book safaris as soon as permits become available.
Madhya Pradesh is large, and its parks are far apart, so plan routes around the nearest airport or railhead. This guide covers who the state suits, the parks and heritage sites, when to go, how to reach, safari planning and a sample route.
Who Madhya Pradesh suits
- Wildlife lovers and photographers: tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs and the barasingha.
- Families with children: safaris are thrilling for children who can sit through a three- to four-hour drive.
- Couples: forest lodges with riverside decks, night skies and quiet afternoons.
- History and architecture lovers: Khajuraho's carved temples, Orchha's palaces, Sanchi's stupa and Mandu's ruins.
- Pilgrims: Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar on the Narmada.
The parks, compared
| Park | Known for | Gateway |
|---|---|---|
| Kanha | Sal forests, meadows, tigers, barasingha | Jabalpur |
| Bandhavgarh | High tiger density, the hilltop fort | Jabalpur or Umaria |
| Pench | Teak forests, the setting associated with The Jungle Book | Nagpur |
| Satpura | Walking safaris, canoeing, jeep trails, sloth bears and leopards | Bhopal |
| Panna | Tiger recovery story, Ken river gorge, near Khajuraho | Khajuraho |
How safaris work
Each tiger reserve is divided into core and buffer zones, with a fixed number of vehicles allowed into each zone in the morning and afternoon. Permits are booked through the official MP Forest online booking portal, and popular zones on weekends and holidays sell out quickly. Morning safaris start before sunrise and last about four hours; afternoon safaris run until sunset. Two to four safaris in one park give you a realistic chance of a tiger sighting, though it is never guaranteed.
Satpura is different. Alongside jeep safaris, it allows guided walking safaris, canoeing on the Denwa backwaters and night drives in the buffer, making it ideal for travellers who want to experience the forest rather than just look for tigers. Our Satpura Wildscape trip is built around these experiences.
When to go
October and November bring lush forests and pleasant weather after the rains. December to February is cool to cold, especially on early-morning safaris, so pack warm layers, gloves and a cap. March to June is hot, but sightings improve as animals gather near water. Khajuraho and Orchha are most comfortable from October to March; the Khajuraho Dance Festival is usually held in February.
How to reach
Jabalpur is the gateway for Kanha and Bandhavgarh, with flights and trains from major cities; both parks are about four to five hours away by road. Nagpur is the gateway for Pench, roughly two hours away. Bhopal is the gateway for Satpura (around three hours to Madhai) and for Sanchi and Bhimbetka. Khajuraho has its own airport, and Orchha is reached via Jhansi, which has fast trains from Delhi. A private car is the most practical way to move between parks.
Heritage and pilgrimage
Khajuraho's Western Group of temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its intricate carvings. Orchha, on the Betwa river, has palaces, cenotaphs and a temple where Ram is worshipped as a king. Sanchi's Great Stupa is one of India's oldest Buddhist monuments, and the rock shelters at Bhimbetka hold prehistoric paintings. Ujjain is one of India's holiest cities and home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and Omkareshwar sits on an island in the Narmada. Mandu's Afghan-era palaces and the Rani Roopmati pavilion are beautiful in the monsoon.
A sample six-night route
| Nights | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Kanha | Four to five safaris across zones, a naturalist-led village and forest walk, the museum |
| 4–6 | Bandhavgarh | Three to four safaris, the fort views, slow afternoons at the lodge |
Our Kanha: Beyond the Safari focuses on the forest and its communities, not just the tiger count. For a quieter alternative, pair Satpura with Bhopal and Sanchi.
Choosing a lodge
Lodges around Madhya Pradesh's tiger reserves range from simple forest rest houses to luxury jungle lodges with naturalists on staff. The best lodges add real value beyond a room: resident naturalists who guide your safaris and explain what you are seeing, nature walks in the buffer zone, village visits, birding sessions and evening talks. Most include meals, and many can prepare vegetarian and Jain food with advance notice.
When choosing, check how far the lodge is from the safari gate you are booked into; a long drive before a dawn safari makes for a tiring trip. Ask whether safaris are shared or private, whether the lodge has its own vehicles and naturalists, and what activities are available in the afternoons. In Kanha and Satpura especially, a lodge with a strong naturalist team transforms the experience from searching for tigers to understanding a whole ecosystem.
With parents and children
Safaris involve early starts, bumpy tracks and long hours in open jeeps. Children over six usually enjoy them most, and many parks set minimum age rules for certain activities; check in advance. For older parents, choose lodges close to the gate to shorten transfers, limit safaris to one a day and keep afternoons for rest. Bring cushions for comfort and warm blankets for winter mornings.
Practical tips
- Wear neutral colours; avoid bright clothes and perfume on safari.
- Carry binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
- Follow your naturalist's instructions and keep voices low.
- Carry the ID used for the safari booking; it is checked at the gate.
- Pack warm layers for winter mornings and sun protection for summer.

Your questions, answered
Which is the best national park in Madhya Pradesh for tigers?
Bandhavgarh and Kanha are the best known for tiger sightings. Kanha is also famous for the hard-ground barasingha and its sal forests, while Satpura offers walking safaris, canoeing and a quieter, more varied experience.
When are Madhya Pradesh's tiger reserves open?
Core zones of the main tiger reserves generally open from October to June and close during the monsoon, from roughly July to September. Some buffer zones stay open longer. Check the official booking portal for current dates.
How many days are enough for a Madhya Pradesh safari trip?
Allow at least two nights, ideally three, in each park to have several safaris. A six-night trip comfortably covers two parks, or one park plus Khajuraho or Orchha.
How do you reach Kanha and Bandhavgarh?
Jabalpur is the main gateway for both, roughly four hours by road from Kanha and four to five hours from Bandhavgarh. Satpura is best reached from Bhopal, and Pench from Nagpur.
