A Kerala honeymoon works best with Munnar's tea hills, a private houseboat night on the backwaters and a beach finish at Marari or Kovalam, at an unhurried pace. Here is how to choose the month, the stays, the moments worth booking and the budget levers.

A Kerala honeymoon works best with Munnar's tea hills, a private houseboat night on the backwaters around Alleppey or Kumarakom, and a beach finish at Marari or Kovalam. Six to eight nights at a gentle pace is ideal, and the season from September to March is the most popular.

Kerala has long been one of India's favourite honeymoon states, with misty hills, quiet backwaters, palm-lined beaches and Ayurveda. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.

The short answer: fewer bases, more time

For a first honeymoon, three bases over six to eight nights is the right shape: Munnar, the backwaters and a beach. Drives between them take three to five hours, so each move takes half a day.

Couples who want wildlife can add Thekkady, and those who want wellness can choose an Ayurveda resort for the beach stay.

Our Riverside Romance trip follows a similar shape, and the Kerala 7-day itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.

Which month suits your wedding date?

Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Kerala.

MonthsWhat to expect
September to Novembergreen after the monsoon, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds than peak season.
December to Februarypeak season, with cool hills and sunny beaches. Book early around Christmas and New Year.
March to Mayhot and humid on the coast; Munnar stays cooler.
June to Augustthe monsoon, with lush landscapes, lower rates and the traditional season for Ayurveda.

Our best time to visit Kerala guide covers each month in more detail.

Romantic bases and what each offers

Munnar has tea estates, misty hills and viewpoints. Stay in a resort or plantation bungalow with a valley view. Thekkady has the Periyar Tiger Reserve, spice gardens and boat rides on the lake. Alleppey and Kumarakom are the backwater bases, with houseboats and lakeside resorts on Vembanad Lake. Marari is a quiet beach with fishing villages and relaxed resorts. Kovalam and Varkala offer cliffs, beaches and Ayurveda resorts in the south. Fort Kochi has colonial streets, cafés and art, good for a first or last night.

Honeymoon routes that work

Six nights, classic: two nights in Munnar, one on a private houseboat and three at Marari. Eight nights, with Thekkady: one night in Kochi, two in Munnar, one in Thekkady, one on a houseboat and three at Marari or Kovalam. Seven nights, wellness: two nights in Munnar, one on a houseboat and four at an Ayurveda resort in Kovalam.

Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the main houseboat hub, with the widest choice of boats and canal routes past villages and paddy fields. Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, is quieter, with lakeside resorts and a bird sanctuary. Many couples spend one night on a houseboat from Alleppey and then move to a lakeside resort or straight to Marari, which is close by. In peak season, the main channels can be busy with boats, so ask for a quieter route.

Getting around

Most couples fly into Kochi (Cochin) and leave from Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram. A private car with a driver is the easiest way between bases; hill roads to Munnar are winding, so travel in daylight. Our how to reach Kerala guide covers flights and trains from Indian metros.

Choosing the right stay

For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the star rating. A valley-view room in Munnar, a private one-bedroom houseboat with an upper deck, and a sea-facing villa at the beach make the trip. Our Just Us by the Sea at Marari is built around a beach stay for couples.

Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.

Moments worth booking in advance

  • A private houseboat night: with sunset on the backwaters and a home-cooked dinner.
  • A couples' Ayurveda treatment: at a resort with qualified therapists.
  • Sunrise over the tea hills: in Munnar.
  • A Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance: in Kochi or Thekkady.
  • A private photo session: on the backwaters or in the tea gardens.

Vegetarian and Jain dinners

Vegetarian couples eat very well in Kerala: sadya on a banana leaf, appam with vegetable stew, dosas, avial and thoran are everywhere, and houseboat crews cook vegetarian or Jain meals with notice. Our Kerala food guide has the details.

Where the honeymoon budget goes

The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:

  • Travel in September to November or in the monsoon for lower rates.
  • Spend on the houseboat and one special room; keep the others simple.
  • Book Christmas and New Year early.
  • Choose three bases rather than five.
  • Eat at local restaurants as well as resorts.

Our Kerala trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.

Keeping the pace gentle

A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Hill drives are tiring, so keep sightseeing light on travel days, and leave the beach days free.

Kerala resorts are designed for slow days, with pools, spa treatments and long lunches. Plan one outing a day at most, and keep evenings for sunsets and quiet dinners.

Honeymoon mistakes to avoid

  • Too many bases, leaving more time on the road than in places.
  • Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
  • Booking a shared houseboat when a private one-bedroom boat is the experience you want.
  • Driving to Munnar after dark.

Practical details couples forget

No visa or permit is needed for Indian travellers, but carry government photo ID for flights, hotels and houseboats. If one partner has recently changed their name, carry a marriage certificate along with ID, as some hotels ask couples for it. Travel insurance and a small medical kit are sensible for hill drives.
