How Much Does a Kerala Trip Cost? Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury
- Kerala

- Planning
A Kerala trip costs most in hotels and houseboats, then in your car and driver for the hills and backwaters, and in flights or trains to reach the state. Christmas, New Year and Onam are the priciest weeks. Here is how the budget breaks down for budget, mid-range and luxury trips.
A Kerala trip costs most in hotels and houseboats, then in a private car and driver for Munnar, Thekkady and the backwaters, and in flights or trains to reach the state. Christmas, New Year and Onam are the priciest weeks, while the monsoon brings the lowest prices. Your choice of stays and the number of hill and backwater nights move the total more than anything else.
Kerala suits every budget, from simple homestays to luxury resorts. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use this as a framework when you compare quotes.
Where the money goes
| Component | Share of the budget | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and homestays | Largest | Category, location, season, views |
| Houseboat | Medium to large | Private or shared, bedrooms, AC, season |
| Car and driver | Medium | Number of days, vehicle size, distance |
| Flights or trains | Medium | City, season, booking window |
| Experiences | Small to medium | Periyar safari, Kathakali, Ayurveda, plantations |
| Food | Small | Local restaurants, resort dining |
Getting there
Flights to Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram are the quickest option; prices rise sharply around Christmas, New Year and Onam. Trains from Mumbai, Goa, Bengaluru and Chennai are good value when booked early. Flying into Kochi and out of Thiruvananthapuram saves a long drive. See our guide to reaching Kerala.
Hotels and homestays
Kerala's stays range from family-run homestays in Fort Kochi and Munnar to plantation bungalows, lakeside resorts in Kumarakom and beach hotels in Kovalam and Varkala. Hill stays with views and lakeside resorts cost more. Homestays offer good value and home-cooked Kerala food.
The houseboat
A private overnight houseboat in Alappuzha or Kumarakom is one of Kerala's highlights and one of its biggest costs. Price depends on the number of bedrooms, the hours of air-conditioning, the meals and the season. Shared houseboats, day cruises and public ferries cost much less. Book early for December and January.
Car and driver
A private car with a driver for the whole route is the most comfortable way to see the hills and backwaters. Cost depends on the number of days, distance and vehicle size; larger vehicles for families cost more. The quote should include fuel, the driver's allowance, tolls and parking.
Cheaper ways to get around
Public ferries in the backwaters, especially between Alappuzha and Kottayam, give a glimpse of canal life at very low cost. Kerala State Road Transport buses connect the hills and coast, and trains link Kochi, Alappuzha, Varkala and Thiruvananthapuram. These suit flexible travellers; families and parents usually prefer a car.
Experiences
A boat safari or nature walk at Periyar, a Kathakali performance in Fort Kochi, a spice plantation tour in Thekkady and a tea museum visit in Munnar are moderately priced. Ayurveda ranges from a single massage to week-long treatment programmes at wellness resorts, such as our Kerala Wellness Retreat.
Food
Kerala food is good value: sadya meals on banana leaves, appam with stew, dosas and fresh seafood. Vegetarian food is easy to find, and Jain meals can be arranged with notice. Resort dining costs more than local restaurants.
How your route changes the cost
The classic route — Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and the backwaters — needs a car for most of the week and one houseboat night. Adding a beach stay in Kovalam, Varkala or Marari adds a few nights but little driving if you fly out of Thiruvananthapuram. North Kerala, with Wayanad, Kannur and Bekal, is quieter and often better value, and the Theyyam season from roughly November to April draws visitors to Kannur and Kasaragod.
How many days to budget for
Seven nights is enough for the hills, the backwaters and a beach. Shorter trips save on hotels but spend a larger share of time in the car, while ten nights or more allow a slower pace with an Ayurveda programme or a plantation stay. Every extra driving day adds to the car cost, so choose bases that reduce long drives.
Budgeting for Ayurveda
Ayurveda in Kerala ranges from a single relaxing massage at a hotel spa to residential treatment programmes of a week or more with a doctor's consultation, meals and daily therapies. Residential programmes are usually priced as packages. Choose centres with qualified practitioners, and be clear whether you want relaxation or a structured treatment.
Budget, mid-range and luxury styles
| Style | Stays | Transport and experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Homestays and simple hotels | Trains and buses, shared houseboat, ferries |
| Mid-range | Three- and four-star hotels, plantation stays | Private car, private houseboat, Periyar |
| Luxury | Lakeside and hill resorts, wellness retreats | Private car and guide, premium houseboat, Ayurveda |
How the season changes the bill
| Period | Prices | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-December to early January | Highest | Peak demand, houseboats book out |
| October to March (other weeks) | High | Pleasant weather, main season |
| April and May | Moderate | Hot and humid on the coast; hills pleasant |
| June to September | Lowest | Monsoon, lush scenery, Ayurveda season |
Package or do-it-yourself
A package makes the budget predictable and secures houseboats and hill stays in peak season. Our Serene Kerala Escapade covers the classic route, and Unexplored Kerala takes quieter roads. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays, meals, houseboat type, car and driver, experiences and taxes.
Eight ways to bring the total down
- Avoid Christmas, New Year and Onam weeks.
- Consider the monsoon for lower prices and Ayurveda.
- Book trains early from south and west India.
- Mix homestays with one special resort.
- Choose a shared houseboat or day cruise.
- Fly in and out of different airports to save driving days.
- Eat at local restaurants.
- Check the car quote includes all allowances and tolls.
For families and parents
Families need larger vehicles and family rooms, which add cost; book early. Parents may prefer fewer hotel changes and a private houseboat with an air-conditioned room.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples often spend on a private houseboat and a lakeside or beach resort, and save on city hotels. Our Riverside Romance suits a slower trip.
How to compare quotes
Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category, meals, houseboat type and AC hours, vehicle size and driver allowances, experiences and taxes. A lower price often means a shared boat or a smaller car.

Your questions, answered
What is the biggest cost on a Kerala trip?
Hotels and the houseboat are usually the biggest costs, especially in December and January. A private car and driver for the hills and backwaters comes next.
Is a houseboat expensive?
Houseboat prices depend on the number of bedrooms, air-conditioning hours, meals and season. A shared or day cruise costs much less than a private overnight boat, and Christmas and New Year are the most expensive dates.
When is Kerala cheapest to visit?
The monsoon months from June to September usually bring the lowest hotel and houseboat prices, along with lush scenery and Ayurveda packages. Avoid Onam and Christmas weeks if you want lower prices.
Is a package cheaper than booking Kerala myself?
Not always, but packages often include negotiated hotel rates, a driver for the whole route and houseboat bookings, which can be hard to secure in peak season. Compare the full line-by-line total.

How to Reach Kerala: Flights, Trains and Road Routes
Most travellers reach Kerala by flying into Kochi, which suits Munnar, Thekkady and the backwaters; Thiruvananthapuram suits Kovalam and Varkala, and Kozhikode or Kannur the north. Trains along the Konkan and Chennai routes and the Bengaluru highway are good alternatives.
