Kashmir Honeymoon: Romantic Routes and Stays
- Kashmir honeymoon
- Srinagar
- Gulmarg
- Pahalgam
A Kashmir honeymoon works best with a houseboat night on Dal Lake, a few days in Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and time for gardens, shikara rides and snow or meadows depending on the month. Here is how to choose the season, the stays, the moments worth booking and the budget levers.
A Kashmir honeymoon works best with a houseboat night on Dal Lake, two or three nights each in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and time for gardens and shikara rides in Srinagar. Choose your season first: tulips and meadows in spring, gold in autumn, or snow in winter.
Kashmir has been a honeymoon favourite for generations, with lakes, Mughal gardens, pine forests and snow-capped peaks. This guide covers when to go, where to stay, the moments worth planning, and how to keep the pace gentle.
The short answer: fewer bases, more time
For a first honeymoon, three bases over six or seven nights is the right shape: Srinagar (including a houseboat night), Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Sonamarg works as a day trip from Srinagar.
Drives between bases take two to three hours, so each move takes half a day.
Our Enchanting Kashmir Sojourn trip follows a similar shape, and the Kashmir 7-day itinerary shows a day-by-day plan.
Which month suits your wedding date?
Indian weddings cluster between November and February and again in April and May, so your honeymoon month is often decided for you. Here is what to expect in Kashmir.
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | spring blossom, the Tulip Garden in Srinagar (usually late March to April) and green meadows. |
| June to August | pleasant and green; busy with domestic travellers and, in Pahalgam, Amarnath pilgrims in July and August. |
| September to November | golden chinar trees and clear skies, a beautiful and quieter season. |
| December to February | snow in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, cold nights and frozen scenery. Roads can close after heavy snowfall. |
Our best time to visit Kashmir guide covers each month in more detail.
Romantic bases and what each offers
Srinagar has Dal and Nigeen lakes, houseboats, shikaras and the Mughal gardens of Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi. Gulmarg is a meadow resort with the Gulmarg Gondola, snow in winter and flowers in summer. Pahalgam sits in the Lidder valley, with river views, pine forests and valleys such as Betaab and Aru. Sonamarg has glaciers and meadows, best as a day trip in the warmer months. Nigeen Lake is quieter than Dal Lake, with calmer houseboats. Yusmarg and Doodhpathri are quieter meadows for couples who want fewer crowds.Honeymoon routes that work
Six nights, classic: one night on a houseboat, two in Srinagar, two in Gulmarg and one in Pahalgam, then back to Srinagar. Seven nights, slow: two nights on a houseboat, two in Pahalgam and three in Gulmarg. Six nights, winter: two nights in Srinagar on a heated houseboat or hotel, three in Gulmarg for snow and one more in Srinagar.Getting there and around
Fly into Srinagar from Delhi, Mumbai and other metros; a private car with a driver handles transfers. In winter, flights can be delayed by weather, so build in a buffer day before your flight home. Our how to reach Kashmir guide covers flights and trains from Indian metros.
The Gulmarg Gondola
The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases, with the second rising to Apharwat peak at high altitude. Tickets sell out in peak season, so book online in advance, go early, and dress warmly. Phase two can close in bad weather, so keep the day flexible. People with heart or breathing conditions should ask a doctor before going to the top.
Choosing a houseboat
Houseboats on Dal Lake are moored in rows near the main boulevard, with shikara access; those on Nigeen Lake are quieter and greener. Look for a well-reviewed boat with a lake-facing bedroom, an attached bathroom, reliable hot water and, in winter, heating. One or two nights is usually enough, followed by a hotel stay for comfort. Your houseboat host can arrange shikara rides, the floating market at dawn and home-cooked dinners.
Choosing the right stay
For a honeymoon, the room matters more than the star rating. A deluxe houseboat with a lake-facing room, a hotel in Gulmarg with mountain views and heating, and a riverside room in Pahalgam make the trip. Ask about heating and hot water in winter.
Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon when booking. Many note it and some offer a small welcome touch, but do not count on upgrades in peak season. Ask for a view room in writing, and check whether breakfast is included, as it helps the budget.
Moments worth booking in advance
- A sunrise shikara ride: on Dal Lake, past the floating vegetable market.
- A walk in the Mughal gardens: at Nishat or Shalimar in the late afternoon.
- The Gulmarg Gondola: on a clear morning.
- A riverside picnic in Pahalgam: or a walk in Betaab Valley.
- A private photo session: on a shikara or in the snow.
Vegetarian and Jain dinners
Vegetarian couples eat well in Kashmir: Kashmiri Pandit dishes such as dum aloo, nadru yakhni and rajma, North Indian food, bakery breads and kahwa. Houseboats cook home-style meals; tell them about vegetarian or Jain needs in advance. Our Kashmir food guide has the details.
Where the honeymoon budget goes
The biggest costs are usually flights, hotels in peak season and private experiences. A few levers make a real difference:
- Travel in autumn or early spring rather than peak May and June.
- Spend on one deluxe houseboat night and a view room in Gulmarg.
- Book the Gondola and flights early in season.
- Choose three bases rather than four.
- Use a single car and driver for the whole trip.
Our Kashmir trip cost guide explains each cost in more detail.
Keeping the pace gentle
A honeymoon is not a sightseeing race. Keep sightseeing light on travel days, rest in the afternoons, and leave mornings for shikara rides and walks.
Ponies, sledges and guides at Gulmarg and Pahalgam offer many add-ons; agree prices before you start and choose only what you will enjoy.
Honeymoon mistakes to avoid
- Too many bases, leaving more time on the road than in places.
- Booking every evening in advance and leaving no room for spontaneous dinners.
- Not checking road and weather updates in winter.
- Booking a houseboat without checking reviews, heating and location.
Practical details couples forget
No visa is needed for Indian travellers, but carry government photo ID for flights, hotels and monuments. If one partner has recently changed their name, carry a marriage certificate along with ID, as some hotels ask couples for it. Travel insurance and a small medical kit are sensible.

Your questions, answered
What is the best month for a Kashmir honeymoon?
April to June brings tulips, blossom and green meadows; September and October bring golden autumn; and December to February brings snow in Gulmarg. Each season suits a different kind of honeymoon.
Should we stay on a houseboat?
Yes, for one or two nights. A houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake, with shikara rides at sunrise and sunset, is a classic Kashmir experience. Choose a well-reviewed, heated houseboat in winter.
How many nights do we need?
Six to seven nights is comfortable for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with an optional day in Sonamarg.
Is Kashmir good for vegetarian couples?
Yes. Kashmiri Pandit dishes such as dum aloo, nadru yakhni and rajma, plus North Indian food, are widely available, and houseboats cook vegetarian meals on request.
