A Kashmir trip costs most in three places: hotels and houseboats, flights to Srinagar and a car and driver for Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. The main extras are local taxi-union cabs at sightseeing points, the Gulmarg gondola and pony rides. Summer holidays and the snow season around Christmas are the priciest periods.

Kashmir suits both simple and luxurious trips, but some local costs surprise first-time visitors. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Flights from Delhi to Srinagar are short but fares rise sharply in May, June and around holidays. The rail link from Jammu and Katra to Srinagar is a good-value alternative if you are already in the region. See our guide to reaching Kashmir.

Hotels and houseboats

A night or two on a Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboat is a highlight; prices depend on the boat's category and season. Srinagar hotels range from simple guesthouses to lakeside luxury. Gulmarg and Pahalgam have fewer rooms, so prices rise quickly in peak season, especially in snow months at Gulmarg.

Car, driver and local cabs

A private car with a local driver for the week is the core transport cost. In Pahalgam and Sonamarg, local unions run the vehicles to points such as Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari, or to Thajiwas, so you pay separately for these. Agree on rates through your hotel or planner, and ask for official rate cards where they exist.

The Gulmarg gondola

The gondola has two phases: the first to Kongdoori and the second, higher, towards Apharwat. Tickets are sold through the official booking system and can sell out, so book ahead and keep the day flexible for the weather. Ponies, sledges and ski equipment are extra.

Ponies, guides and sledges

Pony rides in Pahalgam and Gulmarg are popular with families, and rates are generally fixed by local associations for set routes. Agree the route and duration before you start. In winter, sledge-pullers charge for rides on the snow. A licensed local guide can help you avoid misunderstandings.

Food and shopping

Kashmiri wazwan, kahwa, bakery breads and Kashmiri pulao are moderately priced at local restaurants; hotel dining costs more. Vegetarians will find Kashmiri Pandit dishes such as dum aloo, haak and rajma, and North Indian food is easy to find. Shawls, carpets, papier-mâché and saffron are popular buys; buy from trusted shops and government emporiums. Our Kashmir's Culinary Trails and Traditions explores the food.

Winter costs

Snow season brings skiing and snowboarding in Gulmarg, with equipment rental and instructors adding to the budget. Warm clothing, snow boots and heating matter, and some hotels charge extra for heaters. Flights can be delayed by weather, so keep a buffer day before connecting flights.

How your route changes the cost

Staying in Srinagar and taking day trips keeps hotel changes and costs down. Overnight stays in Pahalgam and Gulmarg add hotel nights but save long drives and allow early starts. Adding Ladakh via Sonamarg and Kargil in summer extends the trip and the budget.

How many days to budget for

Five to six nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with Sonamarg as a day trip. Seven nights allows a slower pace. Every extra day adds car costs, so plan bases to reduce long drives.

Shikara rides

Shikara rides on Dal Lake are priced by the hour, with official rate boards at the ghats. A sunset ride and an early-morning visit to the floating vegetable market are the most popular. Agree the duration and route before you set off, and decline unplanned shopping stops if you are short of time.

Phones and payments

Prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir generally do not work there, so carry a postpaid connection. Cards and UPI work in Srinagar, but carry cash for ponies, local cabs, shikaras and small shops, as ATMs can be scarce in the valleys.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Enchanting Kashmir Sojourn covers the classic valleys. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Avoid school holidays and Christmas weeks.
  2. Book flights and the gondola early.
  3. Stay in Srinagar and take day trips.
  4. Mix one houseboat night with hotels.
  5. Budget for local cabs and ponies in advance.
  6. Eat at local restaurants.
  7. Buy crafts from trusted shops.
  8. Travel in October or November.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles and rooms with heating. Children enjoy shikara rides, pony rides and snow; parents may prefer the first gondola phase and shorter days.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a deluxe houseboat and a cottage in Pahalgam or Gulmarg, and save in Srinagar.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, houseboat category, local cab charges, gondola tickets, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often leaves out local union cabs or gondola tickets.

Your questions, answered

What is the biggest cost on a Kashmir trip?

Hotels and houseboats are usually the biggest cost, followed by flights to Srinagar and a car and driver for Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Why do I pay for extra cabs in Pahalgam and Sonamarg?

In some areas, local taxi unions operate the vehicles for sightseeing points, and outside cars are not allowed beyond certain points. These local cabs are an extra cost on top of your main car, so include them in your budget.

Is the Gulmarg gondola expensive?

The gondola has two phases, with the higher phase costing more. Tickets are sold through the official booking system and can sell out in peak season, so book ahead and check the weather before you go up.

When is Kashmir cheapest to visit?

Late autumn, from late October to November, and early spring outside the tulip festival usually bring lower prices. Summer school holidays and the snow season around Christmas are the most expensive.
