Seven days in Kashmir covers Srinagar's houseboats and gardens, Gulmarg's meadows or snow, Pahalgam's valleys and a day in Sonamarg. Here is a day-by-day route with realistic drive times and seasonal variations.

Seven days in Kashmir is enough for a complete first trip: two nights on a houseboat in Srinagar, two in Pahalgam, one in Gulmarg and a final night in Srinagar, with a day trip to Sonamarg in the warmer months. Fly into and out of Srinagar, travel with an experienced local driver and adjust the route to the season: meadows and Sonamarg in summer, snow in Gulmarg in winter.

Kashmir's valleys are close to Srinagar but in different directions, so the route works best as a series of short drives rather than day trips from a single base. This itinerary covers the essentials, explains what to cut and offers variations for families, couples and travellers with parents.

The route at a glance

1Srinagar (houseboat)Arrive, check in to a houseboat, sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake
2Srinagar (houseboat)Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi), old city, Hazratbal
3PahalgamDrive via saffron fields and Avantipora ruins (2.5–3 hours)
4PahalgamBetaab and Aru valleys, Lidder river walks
5GulmargDrive to Gulmarg (about 4 hours), gondola ride
6SrinagarGulmarg morning, return to Srinagar, shopping for crafts
7SrinagarSonamarg day trip (summer) or floating market at dawn, fly home

Days 1–2: Srinagar

Arrive in Srinagar and transfer by shikara to your houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake. Take a sunset shikara ride past floating gardens and markets. On day two, visit the Mughal gardens — Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi — then the old city's Jamia Masjid and the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine, and Hazratbal on the lake's northern shore.

Days 3–4: Pahalgam

Drive to Pahalgam (two and a half to three hours), passing saffron fields near Pampore and the ancient temple ruins at Avantipora. Settle into a hotel near the Lidder river. On day four, explore Betaab Valley and Aru Valley by local taxi (local union vehicles are required for some valleys), walk along the river, and check locally which meadows and trails are currently open to visitors before planning a pony ride.

Day 5: Gulmarg

Drive from Pahalgam to Gulmarg (about four hours via Srinagar). Ride the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world; phase one reaches Kongdori, and phase two climbs higher towards Apharwat when weather allows. In summer, the meadows are green and dotted with flowers; in winter, Gulmarg is covered in snow and popular for skiing.

Days 6–7: Srinagar and Sonamarg

Return to Srinagar on day six (about one and a half to two hours) and spend the afternoon shopping for pashmina, papier-mâché and walnut-wood crafts at reputable shops. On day seven, take a day trip to Sonamarg (two to three hours each way) for the Thajiwas glacier and high meadows from about April to October, or visit the floating vegetable market on Dal Lake at dawn before your flight.

Winter variation

From December to February, swap the Sonamarg day for a second night in Gulmarg, where you can enjoy snow activities, sledging or a beginner ski lesson. Choose heated hotels and houseboats, and keep a buffer day for snowfall. Our Enchanting Kashmir Sojourn is adjusted for each season.

Why this order works

Starting on a houseboat in Srinagar eases you into Kashmir gently, with short sightseeing days while you adjust to the altitude and cooler air. Pahalgam and Gulmarg follow as overnight stays rather than tiring day trips, and returning to Srinagar at the end puts you close to the airport, with a buffer day for weather. In winter, Gulmarg can be given two nights for snow activities.

Keep the Gulmarg gondola for the clearest morning of your stay, and be ready to swap days if weather closes the upper phase. Your driver will know which roads and valleys are open each morning.

What to cut if you are short on time

  • Five days: Srinagar (2), Gulmarg day trip, Pahalgam (2).
  • Six days: skip Sonamarg.

For food lovers

Our Kashmir's Culinary Trails and Traditions reshapes the week around wazwan, kahwa, bakeries and saffron, with time in Srinagar's kitchens and markets.

Variations for families and parents

For families with older parents, keep the houseboat stay to one night, choose hotels with easy access, and use the gondola's first phase. Pony rides can be bumpy; agree routes and rates in advance. Children enjoy shikara rides, snow and pony rides.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples can choose a luxury houseboat on Nigeen Lake, a riverside room in Pahalgam and a sunset shikara ride with kahwa.

Timing this route

April to June and October are the most comfortable months; December to February is for snow. See our month-by-month Kashmir guide.

Getting there and around

Srinagar's airport has direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai and connections from other cities. Rail links into the valley have expanded in recent years; check current services. Within Kashmir, a private car with an experienced local driver is essential, as drivers know the roads, the weather and local rules. In Pahalgam, some valleys can be visited only in local union vehicles, which your driver will arrange.

Budget levers

  • Travel in April, September or October rather than May and June.
  • Choose a well-reviewed mid-range houseboat for one night and hotels for the rest.
  • Agree pony and guide rates in advance through your driver or hotel.
  • Eat at local restaurants and bakeries for authentic Kashmiri food.

Packing for this route

  • Warm layers and a jacket in every season.
  • Thermal wear, boots and gloves in winter.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for gardens and valleys.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for high-altitude sun.
  • Modest clothing for shrines and the old city.
  • Printed copies of bookings and ID.

Practical tips

  • Postpaid mobile connections from other states generally work; prepaid connections from outside usually do not.
  • Carry warm layers in every season.
  • Buy pashmina only from reputable shops that provide certification.
