Madhya Pradesh has no single gateway. Fly into Jabalpur for Kanha and Bandhavgarh, Nagpur for Pench, Bhopal for Satpura, Indore for Ujjain and Mandu, and Khajuraho or Jhansi for the temples and Orchha. Here is how to choose.

Madhya Pradesh has no single gateway, so choose by destination. Fly into Jabalpur for Kanha and Bandhavgarh, Nagpur for Pench, Bhopal for Satpura, Indore for Ujjain and Mandu, and Khajuraho for its temples. Jhansi, on the main Delhi rail line, is the station for Orchha. Many trips arrive at one airport and leave from another.

India's second-largest state spreads its tiger reserves, temple towns and forts across long distances. Choosing the right airport or station for each park can save half a day of driving. This guide explains the gateways by air, rail and road, and the drive times to the main parks and heritage sites.

By air

Indore is the state's busiest airport, with flights from most metros. Bhopal, the capital, has flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Jabalpur connects with Delhi, Mumbai and other cities and is the gateway for Kanha and Bandhavgarh. Khajuraho and Gwalior have limited flights. Nagpur, just across the border in Maharashtra, is the best airport for Pench and an alternative for Kanha.

By train

Madhya Pradesh sits on India's main north–south rail lines. Bhopal and Jhansi have fast trains from Delhi, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat. Jabalpur, Katni and Umaria serve the eastern parks, and Pipariya serves Satpura and Pachmarhi. Khajuraho has a direct train from Delhi. Indore and Ujjain connect with Mumbai, Delhi and other cities.

By road

Roads between the parks and towns are generally good but long. Jabalpur to Kanha takes about four hours, Kanha to Bandhavgarh about five to six hours, and Kanha to Pench about four to five hours. Bhopal to Satpura's Madhai gate takes about three hours. Khajuraho to Orchha takes about four to five hours. Drive in daylight, as rural roads can have cattle and unlit vehicles after dark.

Reaching the heritage towns

Sanchi's stupas are about an hour from Bhopal, and the Bhimbetka rock shelters about an hour in the other direction. Ujjain, home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, is about an hour from Indore, and Omkareshwar about two and a half hours. Mandu, with its Afghan-era palaces, is about two and a half hours from Indore. Gwalior's fort is on the main Delhi rail line, about three hours from Delhi by fast train.

Combining with neighbouring states

Pench and Tadoba in Maharashtra both connect through Nagpur, which makes a two-state tiger trip easy. Khajuraho and Orchha pair well with Agra and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh by train or road, and Indore links with Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Reaching the tiger reserves

Each park has several gates, and your lodge will be near one of them. At Kanha, the Mukki and Khatia gates are the most common bases. At Bandhavgarh, Tala is the main village. At Pench, Turia is the popular entry on the Madhya Pradesh side. Satpura is different: it allows walking safaris and boat rides, with Madhai as the main base. Our Kanha: Beyond the Safari and Satpura Wildscape include transfers from the nearest airports.

Reaching Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, sits in the Satpura range about an hour and a half by road from Pipariya station and about four and a half hours from Bhopal. It pairs naturally with a Satpura safari, as both lie within the same forest landscape, and offers waterfalls, caves and cooler evenings in summer.

Getting around

A private car with a driver is essential for park circuits, as public transport to the gates is limited. Lodges often arrange transfers. In cities such as Indore, Bhopal and Gwalior, app cabs and autorickshaws work well. Khajuraho's temples are close together and easy to cover by bicycle or e-rickshaw.

Your first day

Flights into Jabalpur or Nagpur usually allow you to reach a park lodge by mid-afternoon. Rather than squeezing in an afternoon safari on arrival day, many travellers rest and start with a morning drive the next day, when tiger sightings are often better.

Season and booking

The core zones of the tiger reserves usually open from mid-October to the end of June and close in the monsoon. November to February is cool and pleasant; April to June is hot but good for sightings near waterholes. Heritage sites can be visited year-round, though summer is very hot. Read our month-by-month guide before booking.

Travelling with parents

Choose a single park with a lodge close to the gate, rather than a long circuit. Early morning safaris are cold in winter, so carry warm layers and blankets. Jeep rides on forest tracks can be bumpy; ask for front seats for older travellers.

For couples

Couples often pair a jungle lodge in Kanha or Satpura with a heritage stay in Orchha or the temples of Khajuraho, flying into one airport and out of another.

Budget options

Trains are the most economical way to reach Madhya Pradesh, and sleeper or AC berths to Jabalpur, Katni or Pipariya keep costs low. Shared safari jeeps reduce permit costs per person. MP Tourism properties offer reasonable stays near several parks and heritage sites.

Practical tips

Carry ID for safari entry, as permits are checked against it. Mobile coverage is weak inside and near the parks. Read our 7-day Madhya Pradesh itinerary and planning guide to plan the rest of your trip.
