Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh are best from October to March, with Dev Deepawali, Diwali and comfortable days on the ghats. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, festivals and the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh is from October to March, when the weather is comfortable for boat rides on the Ganga, the evening aarti and walks through the old lanes. October, November, February and March are the sweet spots; December and January are cool and atmospheric but foggy in the mornings. April to June is very hot, and the July-to-September monsoon raises the river, which can restrict boat rides.

Varanasi, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Agra share the hot plains of North India, so their seasons move together. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds, festivals and the river, suggests the best months by travel style, and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Autumn (October to November): warm, clear days after the monsoon; Diwali and Dev Deepawali.
  • Winter (December to February): cool to cold, foggy mornings, sunny afternoons.
  • Spring (March): warming days, Holi, comfortable evenings.
  • Summer (April to June): very hot and dry, with dusty winds.
  • Monsoon (July to September): humid, with heavy rain and a swollen Ganga.

Peak season: October to March

This is the most comfortable time to experience Varanasi's sunrise boat rides, the evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and walks through the old city's lanes. It is also the time for Lucknow's food trails, when winter specialities such as malai makhan appear. The weeks around Diwali and Dev Deepawali are spectacular but extremely crowded, and hotels with river views sell out months in advance.

Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods", is celebrated on the full moon of Kartik, usually in November. The ghats along the Ganga are lit with countless clay lamps, the aarti takes on extra grandeur, and boats crowd the river to watch. It is one of the most beautiful sights in India, but you need to plan carefully: book a boat or a riverside terrace well in advance, arrive early and expect very large crowds.

Winter fog

December and January bring cold, misty mornings to Varanasi, which can be magical on the river but can also delay trains and flights across the region. Pack warm layers for sunrise boat rides, keep a buffer in your travel plans and choose flights later in the day where possible.

Places by season

Sarnath is pleasant to visit from October to March; Buddha Purnima in April or May draws pilgrims despite the heat. Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam is busiest during the Magh Mela in January and February and, every few years, during the Kumbh Mela, when accommodation must be booked months ahead. Agra is best from October to March, though December and January fog can hide the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Ayodhya's Deepotsav, around Diwali, lights the ghats of the Sarayu with lamps.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, October, November, February and March are best: temperatures are comfortable for boat rides and temple visits, and fog is less frequent. Avoid peak festival days if mobility is limited, as crowds on the ghats can be intense. In December and January, plan later starts and bring warm clothing. Avoid summer travel with young children or elderly parents because of the extreme heat.

How far ahead to book

For Diwali and Dev Deepawali, book riverside hotels and boats four to six months ahead. For the Magh Mela and Kumbh years, book even earlier. In the rest of the peak season, two to three months is usually enough. In summer and the monsoon, shorter lead times are fine.

Matching the route to the season

From October to March, our Enchanted Heritage: Lucknow and Varanasi trip pairs the ghats with Lucknow's food and architecture. Sacred Sands and Spiritual Cities takes a wider spiritual circuit, and Golden Triangle and Sacred Varanasi combines Varanasi with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Booking late for Dev Deepawali: riverside rooms and boats sell out months ahead.
  • Early-morning trains in December and January: fog causes long delays.
  • Expecting full boat rides in August: high water can restrict sailings.
  • Visiting the ghats at midday in summer: plan for dawn and dusk only.

In short

Choose October, November, February or March for the most comfortable visit; November if you want Dev Deepawali and can handle crowds; and December or January for misty, atmospheric mornings on the river with warm layers. Avoid April to June unless you are prepared for intense heat, and expect a high river and restricted boat rides in the monsoon.

What to pack by season

  • October to March: layers, a warm jacket for December and January mornings.
  • April to June: loose cotton clothing, a hat and plenty of water.
  • July to September: rain gear and breathable clothes.
  • All year: modest clothing and a scarf for temples and ghats.

Your questions, answered

What is the best month to visit Varanasi?

October, November, February and March offer the most comfortable weather for boat rides, the evening aarti and walks through the old city. November also brings Dev Deepawali, when the ghats are lit with lamps.

When is Dev Deepawali in Varanasi?

Dev Deepawali is celebrated on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, usually in November, about two weeks after Diwali. The ghats are lit with countless lamps, and the city is extremely crowded.
