Nagaland and the Northeast are best from October to May, with the Hornbill Festival in December and clear skies in autumn. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, festivals and the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Nagaland and the wider Northeast is from October to May. October and November bring clear skies after the monsoon, December is festival month with the Hornbill Festival from 1 to 10 December, and March to May offers pleasant spring weather and blooming hillsides. The monsoon, from June to September, brings heavy rain and landslides on mountain roads.

Nagaland's hills have a mild, monsoon-influenced climate, cooler than the plains of India. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Autumn (October to November): clear skies, harvest season, pleasant temperatures.
  • Winter (December to February): cold mornings and evenings, sunny days, the Hornbill Festival.
  • Spring (March to May): mild weather, rhododendrons, tribal festivals.
  • Monsoon (June to September): heavy rain, lush landscapes, landslide risk.

Tribal festival dates can vary; confirm them with local sources before booking.

The Hornbill Festival

The Hornbill Festival, held from 1 to 10 December at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama near Kohima, brings together Nagaland's major tribes for ten days of traditional dances, songs, games, crafts and food. Evenings bring music events in Kohima. It is the best time to see many Naga cultures in one place, but accommodation, cars and guides must be booked months in advance. Mornings and evenings are cold, so pack warm layers.

Smaller tribal festivals

For a more intimate experience, plan around one of Nagaland's many tribal festivals. Sekrenyi, celebrated by the Angami in February, marks purification and renewal. Moatsü, the Ao festival in early May, celebrates the end of sowing. Aoleang, the Konyak spring festival in Mon in April, features traditional dances and rituals. These festivals are less crowded than Hornbill and offer a closer look at village life, ideally with a local guide.

The wider Northeast by season

Many travellers combine Nagaland with Kaziranga National Park in Assam, famous for one-horned rhinos, which is generally open from November to April. Meghalaya's living root bridges and waterfalls are spectacular in the monsoon but best visited from October to May for easier treks. Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang and Ziro are best from October to April, with the Ziro Festival of Music in September. Sikkim's views are clearest from October to December and in spring.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, October, November and March to April are best: comfortable temperatures and quieter roads. The Hornbill Festival can be crowded and involves walking on uneven ground, so plan morning visits and rest in the afternoon. Avoid the monsoon with young children or elderly parents because of landslide risk.

How far ahead to book

For the Hornbill Festival, book accommodation, cars and guides four to six months ahead. For other months, one to two months is usually enough. Apply for your Inner Line Permit through the official Nagaland ILP portal before travel.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Booking late for Hornbill: Kohima's rooms fill months ahead.
  • Forgetting the Inner Line Permit: Indian citizens from outside Nagaland need one.
  • Planning long drives in July: landslides can block roads for hours.
  • Packing too light for December: mornings and evenings are cold.

In short

Choose early December for the Hornbill Festival, October and November for clear skies and harvest season, and February to May for spring and smaller tribal festivals. Avoid the monsoon unless you are flexible.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Christmas is widely celebrated in Nagaland, where the majority of people are Christian, and Kohima is festive in late December after the Hornbill Festival. Diwali in October or November falls in the clear autumn season, a good time for village visits. Summer school holidays in May and June bring warm, sometimes rainy weather; plan shorter drives. Sundays are a day of rest and worship for many Nagas, with shops and services closed, so plan travel days accordingly.

If you are combining Nagaland with Assam, remember that Kaziranga's main zones usually open in November, so December trips can pair the Hornbill Festival with rhino safaris.

Matching the trip to the season

Our Hornbill Festival trip is built around the December festival, with village visits and comfortable stays arranged. In other seasons, we can plan Kohima, Khonoma and Dzükou around smaller festivals.

Whatever the month, travel with an experienced local driver and guide, start drives early, and allow extra time on mountain roads.

If you can travel outside December, consider October or November: the skies are clear, the hills are green after the monsoon and rice harvests are under way in the terraced fields around Khonoma and Kigwema. Villages are calmer, homestays are easier to book, and you can still see traditional crafts and daily life with a local guide.

Carry cash in every season, as ATMs are limited outside Kohima and Dimapur.

What to pack by season

  • October to February: warm layers, a jacket and comfortable shoes.
  • March to May: light layers and a rain jacket.
  • June to September: rain gear and sturdy footwear.
  • All year: printed ILP copies and ID.
