Odisha is most comfortable from October to March, while the Rath Yatra in June or July is a once-in-a-lifetime festival. Here is a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds and festivals, plus the best months by travel style.

The best time to visit Odisha is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant for temples, beaches and Chilika Lake. November to February is the most comfortable period, with the Konark Dance Festival in December and migratory birds at Chilika. The Rath Yatra in June or July is hot and humid but a once-in-a-lifetime experience. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain.

Odisha's coastal climate is warm and humid for much of the year, with a strong monsoon and occasional cyclones. This guide gives a month-by-month view of weather, crowds and festivals, explains each season, suggests the best months by travel style and shows when to book.

The seasons

  • Winter (November to February): pleasant days, cool evenings, festivals and migratory birds.
  • Spring (March): warming, still comfortable early in the month.
  • Summer (April to June): very hot and humid, with pre-monsoon storms.
  • Monsoon (June to September): heavy rain, green landscapes, the Rath Yatra at its start.
  • Autumn (October): rains easing, Durga Puja, occasional cyclones.

Peak season: November to February

This is the most comfortable time to explore Bhubaneswar's temples, the Sun Temple at Konark, Puri's beach and the craft village of Raghurajpur. The Konark Dance Festival in December stages classical dance against the illuminated temple, and migratory birds arrive in huge numbers at Chilika Lake and Mangalajodi. Cuttack's Bali Jatra in November commemorates Odisha's ancient maritime trade with a vast fair on the Mahanadi.

The Rath Yatra

The Rath Yatra in Puri, held in June or July, is one of the world's largest religious processions. Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are pulled on three towering wooden chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple by hundreds of thousands of devotees. The weather is hot and humid, with early monsoon showers, and crowds are immense. Plan carefully: secure accommodation and a terrace viewing spot months ahead, stay hydrated and follow the guidance of police and volunteers.

Places by season

Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri are best from November to February, though they are visited year-round by pilgrims. Chilika Lake is best from November to February for birds and from October to March for Irrawaddy dolphin boat trips at Satapada. Bhitarkanika National Park is open from about October to April, with crocodile nesting closures in some months. Simlipal National Park is generally open from November to June. Western Odisha's Nuakhai festival in August or September celebrates the new harvest.

With parents and children by season

For families with older parents, November to February is best: temple visits involve walking barefoot on stone floors, which become very hot in summer. The Rath Yatra crowds are not suitable for young children or elderly parents unless you have a reserved viewing spot. Children enjoy boat rides at Chilika and the craft workshops at Raghurajpur in winter.

How far ahead to book

For the Rath Yatra, book accommodation and viewing arrangements four to six months ahead. For December festivals and the winter peak, two to three months is usually enough. In summer and the monsoon, shorter lead times are fine outside Rath Yatra dates.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Booking late for the Rath Yatra: rooms in Puri sell out months ahead.
  • Visiting temples at midday in summer: stone floors become extremely hot.
  • Expecting migratory birds in summer: they arrive from November.
  • Ignoring weather advisories: cyclones can disrupt coastal travel.

In short

Choose November to February for temples, beaches, dance festivals and birds; June or July for the Rath Yatra if you can handle heat and crowds; and avoid April and May unless your plans focus on early mornings.

Fitting in Indian holidays

Diwali and Durga Puja, in October or November, fall at the start of the comfortable season, though cyclone advisories are possible. Christmas and New Year are an excellent time for Puri's beach, Konark and Chilika. Indian summer holidays in May and June are very hot, but families focused on the Rath Yatra often travel then. Plan bookings early for any of these peaks.

Matching the trip to the season

Our Royal Rath Yatra Chronicles trip is built around the festival, with viewing, guides and calm stays arranged. In the winter months, we can plan a temple, craft and Chilika route around the same region.

Whatever the month, visit temples early in the morning, when rituals are under way and stone floors are cool. Combine Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri in a compact loop to keep drives short, and save the afternoons for rest or the beach.

What to pack by season

  • November to February: light cotton clothing and a light layer for evenings.
  • March to June: breathable clothes, a hat and plenty of water.
  • June to September: rain gear and quick-dry clothing.
  • All year: modest clothing for temples and socks for hot stone floors.
