An Uttarakhand trip costs most in hotels and a car with an experienced hill driver, with Corbett safari permits and forest stays as the main extras. Trains from Delhi, ashrams in Rishikesh and homestays in Kumaon keep costs down. Summer holidays and long weekends are the priciest times.

Uttarakhand ranges from simple ashram stays to luxury jungle and riverside resorts. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Fast trains from Delhi to Haridwar, Dehradun and Kathgodam are good value, and buses are cheaper still. Flights to Dehradun save time from distant cities. See our guide to reaching Uttarakhand.

Hotels and stays

Rishikesh has ashrams and guesthouses at low cost and riverside resorts at the higher end. Mussoorie and Nainital fill up in summer and on long weekends. Kumaon villages such as Mukteshwar and Binsar have homestays and boutique lodges. Corbett lodges range from forest rest houses inside the park to luxury resorts outside it.

Car and driver

Hill roads are slow, so a car and driver is a major cost. The quote should include fuel, the driver's allowance, tolls and parking. Trains to Haridwar or Kathgodam followed by shorter drives reduce days on the road.

Corbett safaris

Safari permits and forest rest houses are booked through the official Corbett online booking site. Each drive also needs a vehicle and a registered guide. Dhikala, with stays inside the park, is the most sought after. Our Enchanting Wilderness Getaway combines safaris with a riverside stay.

Activities

River rafting near Rishikesh, from short stretches to longer runs, is moderately priced; choose licensed operators. Yoga classes range from drop-in sessions to residential courses. Treks such as Kedarkantha, Valley of Flowers and Har Ki Dun need guides and permits, and cost more for longer routes.

Char Dham and pilgrimages

The Char Dham Yatra to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri involves long drives, mandatory registration and, at Kedarnath, a trek, ponies, palanquins or helicopters. Helicopter tickets are sold through official channels and are a significant extra. Hotel prices along the route peak in May and June.

Food

Rishikesh is a vegetarian town, with many cafés and simple restaurants at low prices. Kumaoni and Garhwali dishes such as bhatt ki churkani and aloo ke gutke are good value in local eateries. Food lovers can follow A Journey of Taste and Tradition of Nainital.

How your route changes the cost

Rishikesh and Haridwar with Mussoorie make a compact, good-value trip. Nainital with Corbett adds safaris. The high Himalaya — Auli, Chopta and the Char Dham — adds long driving days and higher costs.

How many days to budget for

Four to five nights covers Rishikesh and Mussoorie or Nainital and Corbett. A week allows a slower pace or both regions. The Char Dham needs ten days or more.

Weekends from Delhi

Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Nainital and Corbett are popular weekend trips from Delhi, so Friday and Saturday nights cost more and roads are busy. Travel midweek where possible and book trains early.

Rishikesh on a budget

Rishikesh is one of India's best-value destinations. The evening Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan and Triveni Ghat is free, walks across the river and to the Beatles Ashram cost little, and simple vegetarian cafés are everywhere. Yoga drop-in classes are inexpensive; residential teacher-training courses are a separate, larger commitment.

Nainital and the Kumaon lakes

Nainital is busy and pricier in summer, while nearby Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal are calmer and often better value. Boating on the lakes and the ropeway are modest extras. Mukteshwar and Binsar suit travellers who want mountain views and quiet homestays.

Cheaper ways to get around

Uttarakhand Transport buses and shared jeeps link most towns at low cost. In Rishikesh, shared autos and walking cover the town. These suit flexible travellers; families usually prefer a car.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Packages are especially useful for Corbett, where permits, lodges and vehicles must line up. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Avoid May, June and long weekends.
  2. Take trains to Haridwar or Kathgodam.
  3. Stay in ashrams or homestays.
  4. Choose fewer bases.
  5. Book Corbett permits early on the official site.
  6. Eat at local cafés and dhabas.
  7. Use shared jeeps for short hops.
  8. Visit in autumn or early spring.

For families and parents

Families need larger vehicles and should avoid very long hill drives in one day. Parents may prefer canter safaris and hotels with lifts.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a riverside resort near Rishikesh or a jungle lodge at Corbett and save on transport.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, safari permits, vehicle and guide charges, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often leaves out safari vehicles or uses a smaller car.
