A Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh trip costs most in hotels — especially riverside heritage stays in Varanasi — and in getting there by flight or train. Boats on the Ganga, guides, a car and driver and food are moderate by comparison. Festival dates such as Dev Deepawali and the melas at Prayagraj push prices up sharply.

Uttar Pradesh can be travelled simply or in considerable comfort. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.

Getting there

Varanasi, Lucknow and Agra have flights from many cities, and fast trains link Delhi with Varanasi and Lucknow. Overnight trains save a hotel night. Fares rise around festivals and winter holidays. See our guide to reaching Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh.

Hotels

Varanasi's heritage hotels on the ghats cost more, especially in winter and on festival dates. Guesthouses in the old city are cheaper but basic, and modern hotels in Cantonment and Sigra offer vehicle access at moderate prices. Lucknow and Agra have options at every level.

Boats on the Ganga

A sunrise boat ride along the ghats and a boat for the evening aarti are essential experiences. Shared boats cost little; private boats cost more and rates rise on festival evenings. Agree the price, route and duration beforehand, or book through your hotel.

Guides and walks

A licensed guide for the old city lanes, Kashi Vishwanath and Sarnath adds context and helps you avoid touts. Walking tours focused on food, music or textiles are moderately priced. Sarnath's museum and archaeological site charge modest entry.

Getting around

In Varanasi, walking and e-rickshaws are cheap; cars cannot reach most ghats. For travel between cities, a private car with a driver is comfortable, while trains between Varanasi, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Agra are good value. Expressways make road travel faster than before.

Food

Food is excellent value: kachori-sabzi breakfasts, chaat, lassi and Banarasi paan in Varanasi, and Awadhi kebabs and biryani in Lucknow. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy to find, especially in Varanasi. Hotel restaurants cost more.

Shopping

Banarasi silk saris and brocades are the main purchase in Varanasi, and Lucknow is known for chikankari embroidery. Prices vary widely by quality, so buy from reputable weavers or government emporiums and avoid commission-based shops suggested by touts.

The evening Ganga aarti

Watching the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat from the steps is free; a boat gives a different view and costs more, particularly on festival evenings. Arrive early for a good spot, keep valuables secure in the crowds and agree boat prices in advance. Assi Ghat's morning aarti is quieter.

Festivals and melas

Dev Deepawali in November lights the ghats with lamps and fills hotels and boats months ahead. Diwali, Holi and the Magh Mela at Prayagraj also bring crowds and higher prices. If you want a festival, book early; if you want value, avoid these dates.

How your route changes the cost

A Varanasi-only trip with Sarnath is the simplest. Adding Lucknow, as in our Enchanted Heritage: Lucknow and Varanasi, adds a long drive or a train. Combining with the Golden Triangle adds flights or overnight trains.

Adding Agra and Lucknow

Agra's monuments charge moderate entry for Indian visitors, with an extra ticket for the Taj Mahal's main mausoleum. Lucknow's Bara Imambara and Residency are inexpensive. Trains link Agra, Lucknow and Varanasi, and the Agra–Lucknow Expressway makes road travel straightforward, so combining cities adds mostly hotel nights and transport.

Ayodhya and Prayagraj

Ayodhya, about four to five hours from Varanasi, and Prayagraj, about three hours away, are popular additions for pilgrims. Both have airports and trains. Hotel prices rise sharply during major festivals and the Magh Mela, so check dates before planning.

How many days to budget for

Three nights in Varanasi is enough for the ghats, temples and Sarnath. Add two nights for Lucknow or Prayagraj, or three for Agra and the Golden Triangle. Trains between cities keep costs down.

Package or do-it-yourself

A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Golden Triangle and Sacred Varanasi and Sacred Sands and Spiritual Cities show how Varanasi combines with other regions. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.

Eight ways to bring the total down

  1. Avoid Dev Deepawali and mela dates unless you want them.
  2. Take trains between cities.
  3. Stay in a modern hotel with vehicle access.
  4. Use shared boats for the aarti.
  5. Hire a licensed guide for the lanes only.
  6. Eat at local restaurants.
  7. Buy silk from trusted weavers.
  8. Book overnight trains to save a hotel night.

For families and parents

Families should choose hotels with vehicle access and avoid the densest festival crowds. Parents may find the ghat steps steep; plan boat transfers.

For couples and honeymooners

Couples often spend on a riverside heritage hotel and a private sunrise boat, and save on transport.

How to compare quotes

Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, boat rides, porter and boat transfers, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means a hotel far from the ghats.
