Seven days in Uttar Pradesh covers Lucknow's food and Nawabi heritage, three nights in Varanasi with Sarnath, and Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam. Here is a day-by-day route with realistic travel times and variations.

Seven days in Uttar Pradesh is enough for a meaningful journey: two nights in Lucknow for Awadhi food and Nawabi architecture, one in Prayagraj for the Triveni Sangam, and three in Varanasi for the ghats, the Ganga aarti and Sarnath, with a final morning on the river. Fly into Lucknow and out of Varanasi, travel by car or train between cities, and give Varanasi the most time.

Many visitors try to see Varanasi in a single night, but the city reveals itself slowly, across sunrises and evening rituals. This itinerary balances Lucknow, Prayagraj and Varanasi, explains what to cut and offers variations for families, couples and pilgrims travelling with parents.

Days 1–2: Lucknow

Lucknow is a city of refined manners and food. On day one, stroll through Hazratganj and take an evening food walk in Aminabad or Chowk: galouti kebabs and biryani for non-vegetarians, basket chaat, kachori and sweets for vegetarians. On day two, visit the Bara Imambara and its Bhool Bhulaiya maze, the Rumi Darwaza, the Chota Imambara and the British Residency, and see chikankari embroidery being made in a workshop.

Day 3: Prayagraj

Drive to Prayagraj (about four hours). Take a boat to the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati, where pilgrims bathe throughout the year. Visit Anand Bhawan, the former Nehru family home, and walk around the colonial Civil Lines. During the Magh Mela in January and February, and in Kumbh years, the city fills with pilgrims, so plan accommodation early.

Days 4–7: Varanasi and Sarnath

Drive from Prayagraj to Varanasi (about three hours) and watch the evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat from a boat. On day five, take a sunrise boat ride along the ghats, then walk the old city's lanes with a guide to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor (check current rules for phones and bags) and visit a Banarasi silk-weaving workshop. On day six, spend the morning at Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, then visit Banaras Hindu University's temple and museum and end at Assi Ghat for the evening. Day seven begins with a final sunrise on the river before your flight.

Variations

For a wider spiritual journey, Sacred Sands and Spiritual Cities extends beyond Uttar Pradesh. To combine Varanasi with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, Golden Triangle and Sacred Varanasi is a popular route; see our Golden Triangle itinerary. Our Enchanted Heritage: Lucknow and Varanasi follows a shorter version of this route.

Why this order works

Starting in Lucknow eases you in with food, architecture and gentler days. Prayagraj sits naturally between Lucknow and Varanasi, breaking the drive. Ending in Varanasi gives the city the most time and lets you finish the journey with a sunrise on the Ganga, often the moment travellers remember most. Varanasi's airport has good connections home.

Varanasi is intense, so build quiet time into each afternoon.

What to cut if you are short on time

  • Five days: Lucknow (2) and Varanasi (3), skipping Prayagraj.
  • Four days: Varanasi (3) with Sarnath only.

Variations for families and parents

Many families travel to Varanasi with elderly parents. Choose a hotel with car access, use boats to move between ghats instead of walking the steps, request wheelchairs at temples where available, and plan one main outing each morning and evening. Children enjoy the boat rides, floating lamps and the colour of the lanes, but keep a close eye on them in crowds.

For couples

Couples can stay in a riverside heritage hotel, book a private boat for the evening aarti and enjoy a rooftop dinner overlooking the Ganga.

Timing this route

October to March is the most comfortable period, with Dev Deepawali in November. December and January bring morning fog. See our month-by-month guide.

Getting there and around

Lucknow and Varanasi both have airports with flights from major Indian cities, making an open-jaw trip easy. Fast trains, including Vande Bharat services, link Varanasi with Delhi and Prayagraj. Within the route, a private car is the most comfortable way to travel with luggage, especially for families. In Varanasi, use boats to move along the ghats and cycle rickshaws in the old city, where cars cannot go.

Food along the route

Lucknow is famous for its Awadhi cuisine: galouti kebabs, biryani and nihari for non-vegetarians, and basket chaat, kachori and malai makhan in winter for vegetarians. Varanasi offers kachori-sabzi breakfasts, tamatar chaat, lassi in clay cups and Banarasi paan. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy throughout.

Budget levers

  • Use trains between cities instead of a car for one or two legs.
  • Choose shared boats for the aarti on quieter evenings.
  • Avoid Dev Deepawali and Diwali if you want lower prices.

Packing for this route

  • Modest clothing and a scarf for temples and ghats.
  • A warm layer for early boat rides from November to February.
  • Comfortable sandals that are easy to remove.
  • A small torch for the old city lanes at night.
  • Hand sanitiser and a refillable water bottle.

Practical tips

  • Dress modestly and carry a scarf for temples and mosques.
  • Carry small change for offerings and boat tips.
  • Buy Banarasi silk from established shops or cooperatives.
