Making the most of safaris

Morning drives start around dawn and afternoon drives run until dusk. Plan at least three or four drives per park. A naturalist helps you read tracks and alarm calls. Buffer zones offer good sightings at lower cost when core zones are full.

More of Khajuraho

The Western Group of temples holds the finest carvings, including the Kandariya Mahadev temple. The Eastern and Southern groups include Jain temples. The evening light-and-sound show and the dance festival in February add culture.

More of Orchha

Orchha's Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal and Ram Raja temple sit beside the Betwa river, with chhatris on the bank. Sunset at the cenotaphs and the evening aarti at Ram Raja temple are highlights.

More of Kanha

Kanha's meadows are among the best places in India to see tigers in open country, as well as the barasingha, the hard-ground swamp deer saved from extinction here. Kanha also has a museum at Kisli and village walks in the buffer zone. Our Kanha: Beyond the Safari includes these experiences beyond the jeep drives.

More of Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh is known for a high density of tigers and for the ancient fort on its central hill, with rock-cut caves and a reclining Vishnu statue. The Tala zone is the most popular. It pairs well with Kanha, about five to six hours away by road.

More of Satpura

Satpura is quieter and wilder than the better-known parks, with sloth bears, leopards, gaur and many birds alongside tigers. Its walking safaris, canoe trips on the Denwa river and boat rides give a different perspective. Pachmarhi, the hill station, is nearby. Our Satpura Wildscape is built around these experiences.

More of Pench

Pench, straddling Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, is reached easily from Nagpur. Its teak forests and the Pench river give it a gentler landscape, and it is known for leopards and wild dogs as well as tigers.

More of Mandu

Mandu, on a plateau above the Narmada valley, has palaces, mosques and tombs from the Malwa sultanate, including the Jahaz Mahal, the Hindola Mahal and Rani Roopmati's pavilion. It is especially beautiful in the monsoon, when the lakes fill and the plateau turns green.

More of Gwalior

Gwalior Fort rises above the city, with the Man Singh Palace, the Sas-Bahu temples and the Teli ka Mandir. The Jai Vilas Palace museum, the tomb of Tansen and the evening light-and-sound show at the fort make a full day. Gwalior is about three hours from Delhi by fast train and pairs naturally with Orchha and Khajuraho.

Jabalpur and Bhedaghat

Jabalpur, the gateway to Kanha and Bandhavgarh, has the marble rocks of Bhedaghat, where boats glide between white cliffs on the Narmada, and the Dhuandhar Falls nearby. Moonlit boat rides in winter are a highlight.

More of Bhopal

Bhopal, the City of Lakes, has the Tribal Museum, one of the best in India, the Bharat Bhavan arts centre and the Taj-ul-Masajid. It is the gateway to Sanchi, Bhimbetka and Satpura, all within a few hours.

Ujjain and Omkareshwar

Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar temple holds the Bhasma Aarti before dawn, booked through official temple channels. The ghats on the Shipra and the Kal Bhairav temple are nearby. Omkareshwar, on an island in the Narmada, is about two hours away, and Maheshwar's ghats and handlooms make a peaceful stop.

Festivals

The Khajuraho Dance Festival in February, the Simhastha in Ujjain every twelve years and Diwali across the state draw visitors. Book early for these dates.

Food experiences

Indore's poha-jalebi and Sarafa night market, Bhopali kebabs and dal bafla are highlights. Vegetarian and Jain food is easy.

When to go

October to March is best for heritage and comfortable safaris; April to June is hot but good for tiger sightings. Core zones close in the monsoon.

What you can safely skip

You do not need three parks on a short trip. Choose one or two and add a heritage town.

Getting between experiences

Fly to Jabalpur, Nagpur, Bhopal, Indore or Khajuraho, and use a car and driver between parks.

Free and low-cost experiences

Ghats, markets, Orchha's riverside and MP Tourism stays are good value.

Best views

Khajuraho at sunrise, Orchha's chhatris at sunset, and tigers in Kanha's meadows.

How to choose

Our Kanha: Beyond the Safari and Satpura Wildscape show two approaches.

For families and parents

Children enjoy safaris and boats; parents may prefer canters and lodges close to the gates.

For couples

Couples often favour a luxury jungle lodge and Orchha's riverside.

Practical tips

Carry ID for safaris, warm layers in winter and sun protection in summer. Read our planning guide for more.

A BagPackerMe planner can choose and plan these experiences privately, with one named planner, WhatsApp support throughout and vegetarian and Jain food planned in.
