Experiencing the Rann

At sunset, the salt flats glow pink and gold; under a full moon, they turn silver. The Rann Utsav tent city at Dhordo offers cultural programmes, crafts and food during the season, and village homestays nearby offer a quieter stay. Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, gives views over the Rann. Camel carts take visitors onto the salt.

Planning a Gir safari

Gir safari permits are limited and booked through the official Gir booking site, often weeks ahead in winter. Stay in or near Sasan for early-morning drives. The Devalia interpretation zone offers a shorter, more assured way to see lions. The park's core zone usually closes in the monsoon, from mid-June to mid-October.

Crafts of Kutch

Kutch is one of India's great craft regions: bandhani tie-dye, ajrakh block printing, mirror-work embroidery, copper bells and Rogan painting. Visiting artisans in their villages supports them directly. Our Timeless Textile Traditions of Gujarat focuses on these crafts.

More of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City. Beyond the old city, the Sidi Saiyyed mosque's stone lattice, the Sabarmati Riverfront, the Kankaria Lake and the modernist buildings by Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn are worth a look. Our Ahmedabad: Heritage, Handcraft and History includes guided walks.

More of Bhuj

Bhuj, the base for Kutch, has the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal palaces, the Kutch Museum and the Swaminarayan temple. Rebuilt after the 2001 earthquake, it is a good place to understand the region's history and to arrange visits to craft villages and the Rann.

The kite festival

Uttarayan, the kite festival around 14 January, fills the skies of Ahmedabad and other cities with kites from dawn to dusk. Rooftop parties, special foods such as undhiyu and chikki, and lanterns at night make it a lively time to visit. Book hotels early.

The Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar, depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has a viewing gallery inside with views over the Sardar Sarovar Dam. Around it are a valley of flowers, a jungle safari park, boat rides and a laser show in the evening. Plan a full day, book tickets online and avoid the busiest weekends.

More heritage

Lothal, a Harappan port near Ahmedabad, the Sun Temple at Modhera, Rani ki Vav at Patan and the palaces of Bhavnagar, Gondal and Wankaner make Gujarat a rich heritage destination beyond its famous sights. Many can be combined into day trips from Ahmedabad or Rajkot.

Somnath and Dwarka

Somnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, stands by the Arabian Sea, with an evening light-and-sound show. Dwarka, about five hours along the coast, is associated with Krishna; the Dwarkadhish temple and the boat to Bet Dwarka are highlights for pilgrims. Both get very busy on festival days.

Palitana and Girnar

Palitana's Shatrunjaya hill has more than eight hundred Jain temples, reached by thousands of stone steps; visitors start before dawn. Girnar near Junagadh, with Hindu and Jain temples, now has a ropeway. Both are important pilgrimage sites and suit early starts.

Food experiences

A Gujarati thali, dhokla, khandvi, fafda-jalebi, Kutchi dabeli and Manek Chowk's night food market are highlights. Vegetarian and Jain food is the norm.

Festivals

Navratri brings nine nights of garba, the International Kite Festival in January fills skies with kites, and the Rann Utsav runs in winter.

When to go

November to February is best. Navratri is festive. Summers are very hot.

More wildlife

The Little Rann of Kutch is home to the Indian wild ass, Velavadar to blackbuck, and Nal Sarovar to migratory birds in winter.

You do not need to cover all of Gujarat in a week. Choose Kutch or Saurashtra.
