A Gujarat trip costs most in hotels and a car and driver for the long distances between Ahmedabad, Kutch and Saurashtra. Rann Utsav tents and Gir lion safaris are the main extras. Food is excellent value, and Navratri and the Rann Utsav season are the priciest times.

Gujarat offers heritage cities, the white salt desert, lions, textiles and temples at every budget. This guide breaks the cost down by component, explains what moves the price and shows where to save. We do not quote exact prices, which change by season; use it as a framework when you compare quotes.
Where the money goes
| Component | Share of the budget | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and tents | Largest | Rann Utsav tents, heritage hotels, festival dates |
| Car and driver | Large | Long distances, days, vehicle size |
| Getting there | Medium | Flights to Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Rajkot; trains |
| Safaris and attractions | Small to medium | Gir permits, Statue of Unity, museums |
| Guides and craft visits | Small | Heritage walks, craft villages |
| Food | Small | Thalis, farsan, street food |
Getting there
Ahmedabad has flights from every major city and fast trains from Mumbai. Bhuj, Rajkot and Vadodara have flights too, and overnight trains reach Bhuj, Somnath and Dwarka. See our guide to reaching Gujarat.
Hotels and tents
Ahmedabad has heritage havelis and modern hotels at every level. In Kutch, the Rann Utsav tent city operates in winter, with tent categories at very different prices; Bhuj hotels and village homestays near Hodka and Dhordo are cheaper. Palace hotels in Gondal, Bhavnagar and Wankaner add a royal touch.
Car and driver
Gujarat's distances are long: Ahmedabad to Bhuj takes six to seven hours, and Somnath to Dwarka about five. A car and driver is a large share of the budget; the quote should include fuel, allowances and tolls. Overnight trains and flights between regions reduce driving days.
The Rann of Kutch
The White Rann near Dhordo is best from roughly November to February, when the Rann Utsav runs. Visitors need a permit, available online or at the checkpoint. Full-moon nights are the most popular and expensive. Craft villages around Bhuj are free to visit, and our Timeless Textile Traditions of Gujarat focuses on them.
Gir and wildlife
Gir permits are limited and booked through the official Gir booking site, with gypsies and guides charged separately. The Devalia interpretation zone is shorter and cheaper. The Little Rann of Kutch, with its wild asses, and Velavadar's blackbuck are good-value wildlife additions.
Statue of Unity and Ekta Nagar
The Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar has tickets for entry and the viewing gallery, plus optional attractions such as the valley of flowers, safari park and boat rides. Budget a full day, as the attractions are spread out, and book tickets online ahead of weekends.
Ahmedabad
The old city heritage walk, Sabarmati Ashram, the Calico Museum (by advance booking) and the stepwells at Adalaj are free or inexpensive. Our Ahmedabad: Heritage, Handcraft and History includes guided walks.
Food
Gujarat is one of India's best-value food destinations: unlimited thalis, dhokla, khandvi, fafda-jalebi and street food at Manek Chowk. Vegetarian and Jain food is the norm, which makes planning easy. Gujarat has prohibition, so alcohol is restricted.
Shopping
Bandhani, ajrakh, patola and mirror-work textiles, and Kutch embroidery are popular buys, with prices varying widely by craft and quality. Buying directly from artisans in Kutch supports them and often costs less than city shops.
Festivals
Navratri brings nine nights of garba across the state, with ticketed events in big cities and full hotels. The kite festival in January and the Rann Utsav add colour. Book early for these dates or avoid them for lower prices.
How your route changes the cost
Ahmedabad with Kutch is a compact winter trip. Adding Saurashtra — Gir, Somnath and Dwarka — adds long drives and several nights. The Statue of Unity pairs well with Vadodara and Champaner.
How many days to budget for
Five to six nights covers Ahmedabad and Kutch. A full circuit with Saurashtra needs ten nights or more. Flights or trains between regions reduce driving costs.
Cheaper ways to get around
Gujarat State Road Transport buses are cheap and cover the state, and trains link most major towns. Ahmedabad's metro, BRTS and autorickshaws are inexpensive.
Budget, mid-range and luxury styles
| Style | Stays | Transport and experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Simple hotels and homestays | Trains and buses, Devalia zone, thalis | |
| Heritage and four-star hotels, standard tents | Private car, Gir safari, guides | |
| Palace hotels and premium tents | Private car and guide, curated craft visits |
How the season changes the bill
| Period | Prices | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Highest in Kutch | Rann Utsav, pleasant weather |
| Navratri (September or October) | High | Garba nights, festive crowds |
| March to May | Lower | Hot, quieter |
| June to September | Lowest | Monsoon, Gir core closed |
Package or do-it-yourself
A package makes the budget predictable and secures the stays, drivers and permits that sell out in peak weeks. Our Gujarat's Regal Heritage Expedition adds palace stays. When comparing, list what each option includes: stays and meals, transport, guides, entry tickets, permits and taxes.
Eight ways to bring the total down
- Avoid Navratri and full-moon nights in the Rann unless you want them.
- Stay in Bhuj or homestays rather than premium tents.
- Use overnight trains between regions.
- Book Gir permits early or use Devalia.
- Eat thalis and street food.
- Buy textiles directly from artisans.
- Choose fewer regions.
- Travel in shoulder months.
For families and parents
Families need larger vehicles and should avoid very long drives in a day. Gujarat's vegetarian food and good roads suit parents well.
For couples and honeymooners
Couples often spend on a premium Rann tent on a full-moon night or a palace hotel and save on transport.
How to compare quotes
Line up offers item by item: nights in each place, hotel category and location, meals, vehicle size and driver allowances, Rann tents and permits, Gir safari charges, guides, tickets and taxes. A lower price often means a standard tent or no Gir safari.

Your questions, answered
What is the biggest cost on a Gujarat trip?
Hotels and a car and driver for the long distances between Ahmedabad, Kutch and Saurashtra are usually the biggest costs. Rann Utsav tents and Gir safaris are the main extras.
Is the Rann Utsav tent city expensive?
Tent categories range widely, from standard tents to premium ones, and most packages include meals and cultural programmes. Simpler stays in Bhuj or village homestays nearby cost less.
How do I book a Gir lion safari?
Permits are booked through the official Gir booking site and are limited, so book weeks ahead in winter. Gypsy and guide charges apply. The Devalia interpretation zone is a cheaper, shorter alternative.
When is Gujarat cheapest to visit?
The monsoon and summer months usually bring lower prices, though Gir's core zone closes in the monsoon and summers are very hot. Navratri, Diwali, Christmas–New Year and the Rann Utsav months are the most expensive.
